Dear All,
In the last months I had the chance to visit a private archive in
Italy, and I discovered25 manuscripts for lute, archlute,
chitarrino, cetra and theorbo. It's a very large collection of
 lute
pieces, one of the most important in private hands in the world.
 The
repertoire is ca. 1590-1640, with some relevant exceptions. Among
 the
composers included we can findLorenzino Tracetti, Cavaliere
 del
Liuto (Tracetti or Pinti), Kapsperger, Piccinini.
The collection included not only lute music, but also
 harpsichord,
viola da gamba and vocal music.
On April 5th I will discuss in public for the first time this
discovery, in Pesaro, Italy.
I am working on this archive with a little team, the librarian
 Brunella
Paolini and the scholar Antonio Becchi.
I will give more information in the next period, and I will have
 the
chance to speak in Autumn about that in Bremen, Tours and London.
I hope this will be of some interest.
All the best,
Franco

   Hi Joseph,
You must keep in mind that with this kind of music it is (aside from
performing the notes correctly and beautifully) mainly about
communicating the affect and emotion of the text (not the singer's own
emotions). In this case it is the expression of a character in a role.

To use this clip of Griselda as an example is comparing apples and

  dramatic aria.
Exaggerated dramatic contortions by an instrumentalist IS

[LUTE] Re: Time to work on how we look?

2013-08-20 Thread Leah Baranov
To use this clip of Griselda as an example is comparing apples and
oranges: facial expressions are part of rhetorical expression and is
the responsibility of the singer acting the role he/she is
interpreting. It is entirely appropriate in the performance of a
   dramatic aria.
Exaggerated dramatic contortions by an instrumentalist IS
distracting...but a smiling and relaxed demeanor should not be
   considered a fault.

 Nice little piece, but perhaps not so trivial, as it looks like;
there are some so called false relations (for ex. f against f#)
and some other little peculiarities along those 46 seconds.

PS I just had to warm up my renaissance lute playing before tomorrow

Any 99cent store or hardware/kitchen place sells inexpensive rolls of

 Subject: [LUTE] Rubber mat

  Hi folks
So I finally received my first lute yesterday. I've been trying to
practice out of the beginning of the baroque lute companion, and am
having a bit if trouble keeping the lute in position on my lap.
I tried the ribbon method, where I tie it to the peg box, wrap it
around my back and sit on it. This keeps the neck in position, but
 the
lute still wants to slip out forward away from my chest.
Anyone have any ideas for where I could get a sheet of rubber to
 put in
my lap? I'd really rather use that instead of leather if I can get
  away with it.
  Many thanks!
  Adam
