[LUTE] Re: info on Raul Perez luthier
hi Bruno! how are you??? Nice to hear from you. As you know, I have some instruments made by Raul Perez. A renaissance lute, 8c after laux maler (you can see it in the web site, it is the 2000's pictures), a baroque guitar (voboam) , a rebec, and last december I received a new lute (6c, Gerle). I can send you pictures if you wish. I've paid 1600 USD for the 8c, it was in 1999. I didn't have problems with this lute until this winter, where (my fault, due to central heathing of the house temperature was too high and really dried the room...) the top opened. How: the two hallfs separated at the bottom of the lute, no wood breakage, it only unglued due to wood contraction. The bridge separated as a result, cleanly. It didn't break. He fixed the problem with no inconvenience and the lute is operative again. But it was my fault. The lute was in perfect condition for almost 8 years. And it still sounds good. For the baroque guitar, no problems at all, and it sounds better today than when I bought it. Price: 2400 USD, no case, in 2002-3(don't remember well). The rebec sound good, but it is out of this comparison. The new lute, 6c : I requested it to have the looks of my old lute, but a Gerle model. It has a deeper and louder sound than the old one, due to the different shape. The neck is very comfortable. I used it for a pro recording in a studio last week and it worked fine. He provided it with nylgut strings. The price: aprox 1200 USD, no case. Consider that My price is surely lower than the standard for other people cause I'm an old customer , I live in the same country, and I also became a friend through the years. I'm very happy with the instruments he made for me. I know he sold several instruments to Europe, but don't know to whom. May be Raul can provide some references so you can ask directly. I know that Karin Zwilling from Brazil (she's a professional player) had one of his lutes at least in the past. I don't have her email, but I know she's a member of the UK lute society (may be they have it?). About the climate, you are right, it is something to consider. Buenos Aires is much more humid than Bariloche (Bariloche is less dry than the rest of the patagonia!). My broken lute was an accident ...but it occured the day it snowed in Buenos Aires...first time in 80 years good luck! As some of you know, I have been playing renaissance lute for over 30 years. The last time I had a lute made for me was back in 1981,and although I've had to modify it with the ages to make it more suitable, it remains a pretty heavy lute. For the last 10 years, I have been involvedprimarily with medieval music, and for lack of funds, have been playing on either my renaissance lute, a moroccan oud, or a turkish laouta. I am at the point where I really would like to buy myself a 5 course medieval lute. The price has to be fairly low, as music is just a hobby now and cannotjustify such an expense easily. Last year I met with Laura Maschi ( an argentinian lute player) in Paris, who pointed out the agentinian luthierRaul Perez. www.raulperezluthier.com I have contacted him, and he quotes me a price of 1500 US without the case, and a 12 month wait. He proposes a 50 cm string length, 5 courses after Arnold De Zwolle I would like to know if anyone has ever dealt with him, seen or played his lutes. I am looking for information on his reliability, quality of craftsmanship and generallly overall impression of his lutes. The otherfactor which I have to take in consideration is the climate of Argentina , versus the climate in Canada. In the summer we have high humidity levels, which I guess are probably as high as Patagonia, however the winters are pretty dry, hence the lute might be at risk of developing cracks more easily. Any advice and or information would be of help. [LUTE] Re: vertical dyslexia?
Surely It's not a geographic issue, I live far from you...but it happens the same to me, but it is worse if I'm playing baroque guitar...at a moment I cannot say what kind of tablature I'm reading...neither do I realize which is the upper or lower string in the tab. But it usually happens late at night after a thousand hours at the computer, and very dry and red eyes... My suggested cure is similar to the one already offered...but I'd prefer a Malbec. Laura - Mensaje original - De: Narada [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fecha: MiƩrcoles, Mayo 16, 2007 1:09 pm Asunto: [LUTE] Re: vertical dyslexia? Mmmm, I've suffered from this very same problem since I was about 17 years of age. It's usually caused by excessive rehydration on a Friday night, and often leads to weakness of the left hand, poor syncopation with the right and a sort of blurred vision, as well as the symptoms you mention, the only known partial cure ( not fully ) is to drink say 5 pints instead of 6. Hope this helps N -Original Message- From: Anthony Hind [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 16 May 2007 16:23 To: Lute Net Subject: [LUTE] vertical dyslexia? Dear All Recently, I have noticed that I seem to be beginning to suffer from a sort of vertical dyslexia when reading tablature, even on pieces I have played before. Suddenly, I become conscious of the fact that the notation is the inverse, position-wise, of the actual strings (high bottom-string at the top, etc.). At that moment, I feel slightly dizzy (slight vertigo) and confused (well perhaps that might be my natural state) and I become sort of literal and unable to use it as an automatic trigger for note playing. I have to consciously ask myself which string is being referred to. This seems to occur just after there are successive notations with the same letter, but one on a high string and the other on a low string. For a time, I can't seem to get back into the automatic reading mode. Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing? Hi! By the way... I'm trying to locate whatever is available as public files to download with music for 4-course guitar. I've received my guitar a month ago, and I'm just playing Mudarra's. ALready got what is in Wayne's site, but would like to know if there's something else. any idea? thanks! You can find pdf's and also midi's of Marche pour la Ceremonie des Turcs and Canarie in my page http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/wikla/mus/Lully/Marche/ My explanation reads: These arrangements for chitarrino are made so that it is possible to strum all the chords. That is why some harmonies have been slighly changed - there are some 7th's where Lully did not have them. Also the bar 21 of Canarie is a little tricky: you cannot keep the chord. [LUTE] Re: recommended lute pitch
I think you could tune it at 440, being careful about the tension. SO you should use a string calculator (have you ever used Arto Wikla's?) and select the diameters that allow you to get the desired pitch with may be lower tension. regards, Laura - Mensaje original - De: Steve Bryson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fecha: Domingo, Julio 9, 2006 0:55 am Asunto: [LUTE] recommended lute pitch Hi everyone - I'm a long-time on-again-off-again amateur lute player, but I have something of a newbie question: I have an old Aria 63 cm lute that I used to play at a'=440. Over the years the pegs have shrunk and the pegboard has developed cracks so it will no longer hold a'=440. I now use LaBella copper/nylon strings, which are the lowest tension strings I could find (I've tried gut but I don't play often enough to justify it). It barely holds tune at a'=435. Recently poking around for a new lute, I see 64 cm lutes with advertised pitch of a'=415. I've always been aware that I could drop pitch but preferred the bright sound of a'=440. But was I making trouble for myself by over-tightening a 63 cm lute? So my question: what is the recommended pitch for a 63 cm lute? I imagine with good woods and construction I _could_ do a'=440, but is that recommended? [LUTE] Re: Microphone - Amplifier
Has anyboody tried to use accoustic guitar amplifiers? (like the Trace Elliots?) what were the results? mic type? thanks! Laura - Mensaje original - De: Herbert Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fecha: MiƩrcoles, Junio 14, 2006 10:24 am Asunto: [LUTE] Re: Microphone - Amplifier I know this is not a musical question, but nither entirely OT. What system/elements would you suggest for a fairly good amplification system for a lute (or any historical instrument). In another words, what's reasonably best to mic, transfer (wire/transmitter), amplify, c. without much degradation of the sound. I heard a concert by Ron McFarlane which was semi-amplified. I'd guess the electronics about doubled total volume. It sounded fairly natural, since half the sound was actually from the lutes themselves. In fact, I might not have thought amplified if I hadn't seen the two mikes on low stands about 6 feet away from him. So, if you want actual brand/model names, you might try to find out what he used. By the way, distortion is great for electric guitars, but sounds crummy for voices (and probably lutes). So, get enough capacity so you don't have to crank the volume knob. I'd want a pair of 12-inch speakers (with matching amp wattage), To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
