I have. Not often, but I have.

Indeed.

Indeed. This bothers me only a little most places, because I don't
have much to do with the kind of websites where I'm (putatively) part
of the product. Where it really annoys me is things like governmental
pages or other non-ad-supported stuff.

Presumably under the impression that there are people capable of
realizing lynx can do that but not of realizing that it can be told to
change its User-Agent string. And, somehow, that aren't capable of
just saving the page source from something like Firefox or Chromium.

Bizarre. I do not understand what passes for thinking behind "most web
sites".

fwiw, I use Chrome/Win with some ad ons like adblock / ublock and a hosts
file, I often get these on some sites

(in fact, I was thinking of disabling browser blockers and/or hosts file
and try using pi-hole instead ? I think? that should circumvent web site
pop ups ...?)

I would say that would be the main reason for blocking Lynx explicitly,
although I would have thought it unusual to be so honest about it.

For most web sites, you are the product, and if you are not compatible
with the sorts of adverts that their ad-servers serve, you are a
defective product.

The other reason for a conscious decision to block Lynx was its ability
to be used in bulk downloading. Firstly because it may be used to read
offline, without the adverts, and secondly because they are afraid you
might save the data content for offline use, and therefore not come back
repeatedly, for more helpings of adverts, or may even use them as the
basis of your own web site.

[Lynx-dev] New response to lynx

2020-11-09 Thread dan d.

From time to time I get a line on a web page saying they notice adverts are
turrned off. They remind that this is the source of their income
and support for the page.

Recently I got something similar and they said this was the reason the page was
being blocked to me.--

Has anyone else seen this?
