Announce: LyX 1.1.1

1999-10-29 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

I am glad to announce the official release of LyX 1.1.1, which marks a
turning point in the development of LyX. While it does not have many
new features, there have been lots of internal changes, many of which
have been backported from our old development branch (which is now
extinct). While on the surface this version is very similar to
version 1.0.4, many things happened under the hood.

As a consequence of this: expect that some new bugs have crept in.
I mean it.

A few new user-visible features have been added since version 1.0.4:

- Preliminary export to HTML feature (with tth program)

- All the popups should be more resistant to resize actions.

- normal spaces are automatically made unbreakable if we are in
a freespacing mode (LyX-Code), but not in latex mode. The rule used
to be that spaces where changed when in typewriter font.

- the default encoding of a new document is now latin1, since it seems
to be a reasonable default for many people. Note that you can
override this default with the "Save layout as default" feature.

As usual, version 1.1.1 can be found in the following places:

ftp://ftp.lyx.org:/pub/lyx/devel/lyx-1.1.1.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.1.1.tar.gz

No patches this time, since there have been very a large reorganisation
of the sources.

While this version is certainly not as stable as we would like it to
be, we urge you to try it out and report all problems. It is planned
to release a bug-fix 1.1.2 as soon as possible.

ANNOUNCE LyX 1.1.4fix1

2000-02-16 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

I am glad to announce the availability of the LyX 1.1.4fix1 patch. See
the information enclosed below. One notable missing fix in this patch
is for the bibtex problems mentionned on the lyx-devel list. I hope to
fix that soon.

JMarc

---
This is patch-1.1.4fix1, which should be applied to a fresh lyx 1.1.4
archive. The purpose of this patch is to provide some simple fixes to
LyX 1.1.4 to ease the wait until the next stable release. It is _not_
the purpose of this patch to add new features or somehow `branch' the
development of LyX (all the features provided by this patch are
already in main cvs). It should probably be applied to binary
distributions of LyX 1.1.4, since it offers better stability.

This should not be considered as an official LyX release, but rather
as an additional service to the LyX users community. All questions
specific to this patch should be directed to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This patch fixes the following problems in LyX 1.1.4:

 - fix character \"{e} in latin1 encoding
 - fix problem when running latex on files which have accented
   characters in their names
 - add support for dvi previewers which do not support the -paper
   option (like yap on NT)
 - fix oneside/twoside options in Layout->Document
 - fix crash when trying to select a layout which does not exist

Announce: LyX 1.1.4fix3

2000-04-12 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

I am glad to announce LyX 1.1.4fix3, which is the third maintenance
patch against LyX 1.1.4. Note that you should apply patch-1.1.4fix1
and patch-1.1.4fix2 before 1.1.4fix3.

The purpose of these maintenance releases is to backport the small
bugs found during development in the latest stable release. All of the
fixes provided here have already been applied to our main cvs tree.

You can get it at
  ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/patch-1.1.4fix3.gz
  ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/patch-1.1.4fix3.gz
and soon on mirror sites.

Have fun.
JMarc

Problems fixed by this patch:
-

This patch fixes the following problems in LyX 1.1.4fix2 (these are in
fact bugs of LyX 1.1.4 which were not fixed by the 1.1.4fix[12] patches):

 * LyX often crashed after repeated use of the backspace key. This problem
actually existed since long ago in the program, but did not strike very
often before version 1.1.4. This is probably the main reason why
you will want to apply this patch.
 * error insets were not removed correctly, which caused the removal or
nearby characters in the documents. This is a serious problem too.
 * filenames for images in docbook mode where truncated
 * font tags for SGML output were wrong.
 * -lintl was not added on the link list when compiling on system
which have gettext installed, but not in libc.
 * one header file contained C++ comments, whereas it is compiled with a
   C compiler.

Prebuilt Linux binaries:

As usual Kayvan A. Sylvan has prepared Linux RPMs. The lyx-1.1.4 RPMS are:

ftp://ftp.sylvan.com/pub/lyx/lyx-1.1.4-fix3.i386.rpm
ftp://ftp.sylvan.com/pub/lyx/tetex-lyx-1.1.4-fix3.i386.rpm

Those two RPMS are the only ones most people will need to install.

Additional RPMS (for those who want to rebuild from a source RPM or
who want to install a debuggable binary):

ftp://ftp.sylvan.com/pub/lyx/lyx-1.1.4-fix3.src.rpm
ftp://ftp.sylvan.com/pub/lyx/lyxgdb-1.1.4-fix3.i386.rpm
ftp://ftp.sylvan.com/pub/lyx/lyxgdb-1.1.4-fix3.src.rpm

Building by hand:
-

Since the changes in the configure script trigger some automake magic,
do the following to apply the patch

cd lyx-1.1.4pre2
make distclean
zcat patch-1.1.4fix3.gz | patch -p1
touch Makefile.in */Makefile.in src/config.h.in

Then rebuild LyX as usual.

For all questions related to this patch, mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

ANNOUNCE: LyX 1.1.5

2000-06-06 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Dear LyX users,

It is my pleasure to announce the release of LyX 1.1.5. This release
sports large internal changes, new features and increased stability,
all in one package!

Lots of internal code has been rewritten, fixed, changed and added. We
are taking the C++ Standard Library in greater use for each day, this
will in most cases make the code clearer and easier to maintain and
expand.

We are also gearing up for the merge of the gui-indep branch, expect
this (but not the new gui's) in 1.1.6.

You can get it at:
 ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.1.5.tar.gz
 ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.1.5.tar.gz

As usual, RPMs for Redhat Linux/i386 will be available shortly from
 ftp://ftp.sylvan.com/pub/lyx/

Have fun!

JMarc

User-visible changes:

- Paste to other programs (like emacs or xterm). Note: text only.

- New TOC menu item for fast access to the table of contents.

- New Refs menu item for quick insertion of cross-references.

- multilingual documents (preliminary support)

- Right-to-Left support for Hebrew and Arabic, this is a first attempt
only and is likely to improve in future versions.

- Per-paragraph spacing, currently only settable from the
  command-line/window:
  paragraph-spacing (default,single,onehalf,double,other) [float]

- New visual feedback for environment depth of paragraphs (also the !
in the margin for margin notes has been removed).

- End-of-proof box, for layouts where it makes sense.

- labels are now editable (not in equations, though).

- Much faster spellchecking (50x faster!).

- The parsing of the LaTex log has improved flagging more errors that
earlier versions of LyX did not see at all. So if you suddenly have
errors in documents that used to have none, this might be the casue.
(And you probably had the error always.)

- Better definition for LyXList style.

- hollywood.layout and broadway.layout have improved. New classes
LLNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science), svjog (Journal of Geodesy)

- support for varioref and pretty ref (preliminary support)

- A couple of changes to the LyX format, so that files written with
1.1.5 will not be parsed correctly by older LyX versions if protected
spaces or the new per-paragraph spacing are used. Also the RtL
support is of course not supported in older versions.

- Removed support for XForms older than 0.88.

- Some command-line options and X resources are not supported anymore
(The color ones, and -mono -fastselection, -reverse)

- New command-line options '-userdir' which so that you can choose to
use another dir than .lyx for user configurations. (Or have many.)

- new lyxrc variables: \show_banner [true|false] to remove the banner
screen, \backupdir_path to tell where the backup files created
by lyx should be stored, and \override_x_deadkeys to tell whether
lyx should provide its own accent keys handling (default is true).

ANNOUNCE: LyX 1.1.5fix1

2000-07-20 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Dear LyX users,

The time has finally come to release LyX 1.1.5fix1 (aka "The quick
brown fix jumped over the lazy bugs" release). It has taken a lot of
time, but many fixes have been done, while the work on next major
version 1.1.6 continues to go on at full steam.

Basically, 1.1.5fix1 is a bugfix release. It contains however a few
new features (mostly things which used to work in 1.1.4). Note that
there is now a mechanism to create binary distributions. Feel free to
contribute yours :)

You can get it at:
 ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.1.5fix1.tar.gz
 ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.1.5fix1.tar.gz

Binary RPMs for Redhat Linux/i386 are available at
 ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.1.5fix1/lyx-1.1.5fix1-1.i386.rpm (soon)

What's new
==

** New features [yes I know there should not be new features, but these
   were almost bugs]

- New lyxrc command \set_color, to set the colors of the GUI elements
in the document [a functionality present in 1.1.4, but not in 1.1.5]

- New lyxrc command \wheel_jump that sets the amount of text skipped
when using a mouse wheel [the behaviour of 1.1.5 was unintentionnaly
different from 1.1.4, now you can choose what you want]

- new Makefile target "bindist", so that we can try again to have
binary distributions of LyX. [As was possible in 1.0.x versions]

- add 'Reset' option to language choice.

- better support for arabic points.

** Bugfixes

- fix crash in lyxsum() when running LaTeX (with older stream libraries).

- fix crash in the spellchecker (with older stream libraries).

- fix two crashes related to clipboard

- fix problem with tables when reading msdos-encoded lyx files.

- fix crash when closing index popup from window manager.

- make sure the .kmap files exist when a keymap is specified.

- better dependency for latex runs.

- fix disappearing cursor in some situations

- fix bug in configure where installation would fail in the reLyX
  directory in some cases.

- fix build problems on AIX and Solaris.

- fix bug in the install-strip Makefile target

** Other: documentation update, UI translation updates.

Remaining problems
==

These are bugs which are probably small, and appeared recently. Good
clients for a fix release. Note that they exist in 1.1.6 too, so we'll
have to fix them eventually. Please send me references to the ones I
forgot.

- When the cursor is between two spaces, then the Shift-Cursor
selection keys will lead to a mangled selection (on screen)
  http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org/msg12431.html

- the documentation should be reviewed to indicate the 1.1.5fix1 is a
stable release (should some english-speaking volunteer have a look?).

- bad karma between \noindent and Description
  http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org/msg11759.html

- the --with-lyxname switch of configure still does not work. It just
a matter of convincing automake to do what we want...

Hello,

After several requests, we have made available from the usual places
the file patch-1.1.5fix1.gz to upgrade LyX 1.1.5 source to 1.1.5fix1.
Note that this patch does not change the .gmo files (compiled
translation of the UI, which are binary files). This means that, if
you do not have the proper gettext tools installed, the fixes to the
UI translations will not be applied.

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.1.6fix2

2001-05-22 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Hello,

The long overdue second update to LyX 1.1.6 has finally been released.
It fixes a lot of annoying or severe bugs, but also features
documentation updates, as well as DocBook support improvements.

Note that this version does not fix all the tabular problems
experienced by LyX 1.1.6 users. Many of these problems have been fixed
in our development tree, but require changes too important to be part
of a fix release.

You can get it at:

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.1.6fix2.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.1.6fix2.tar.gz

The patch is available at

RPMs for Redhat Linux are at

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.1.6fix2/lyx-1.1.6fix2-1.i386.rpm

Don't let the size of this patch alarm you. It is 90% translation
updates (both documentation and localization of menus), so the changes
to the code are small and safe.

As always, if you have a problem, remember that the answer is "42". If
this does not help, feel free to contact the mailing-list

** Updates

- add language support in docbook; better support for verbatim text.

to --with-version-suffix; it can now be used without argument (to
  install as lyx-1.1.6fix2)

- many translations updated; big french documentation overhaul; german
  documentation update.

- preliminary Thai support; new serbo-croatian support

- fix bug with cursor when inserting Greek characters

- fix a bug where bibtex was not always run when needed

- fix a babel error after changing the language of the document

- Fix (local) language changing in latex files.

- Added options for disabling babel and passing language options only
to babel (not supported in preferences)

- fix crash after running Edit->Reconfigure

  filename

The LyX team is happy to announce the sponsorship of the next LyX
Developers Meeting (to be hold in Bozen in northern Italy between the
21st and the 26th of June) by the CCP2000 Organizing Committee.
CCP2000 is a conference on Computational Physics, which took place in
December 2000 in Australia.

In their own words:
" This is a small gesture, to give some recognition to the
excellent work that the LyX team has carried out in their efforts
to provide a useful and free document preparation tool to the world.

Since many physicists have found [LyX] valuable - and more
will in the future - it is only reasonable that we can try to help you get
together to improve LyX. It is also a way to say thanks to Allan Rae. "

Allan Rae is one of the LyX developers. He gave a talk about LyX during
CCP2000, furthering the recognition LyX already has in the scientific world
for document preparation.

The LyX Team thanks the CCP2000 Organizing Committee for their kind
support. At the meeting, we will be working on LaTeX import/export as
per their request.

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.1.6fix4

2002-01-14 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Dear LyX lovers,

It seems time has come for a final fix release to LyX 1.1.6. The first
preversion of 1.2.0 is around the corner (yes, we promise!), but
before having fun with exciting new feature, we thought we could propose
you a boring old fashioned stable version.

The new version is faster with large files, fixes some old problems
with selections which could eventually lead to a crash, the infamous
"Greek characters do not display" bug on mandrake Linux and a lot of
other annoyances. There are even a (few) new features! So, what are you
waiting for?

Standard 1.1.6 disclaimer: this version does not fix all the tabular
problems experienced by LyX 1.1.6 users. Many of these problems have
been fixed in our development tree, but require changes too important
to be part of a fix release.

You can get it at:

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.1.6fix4.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.1.6fix4.tar.gz

The patch is available at

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/patch-1.1.6fix4.gz

RPMs for Redhat Linux are at

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.1.6fix4/lyx-1.1.6fix4-1.i386.rpm

What's new
==

** Updates

- add support for latin3, latin4 and latin9 encodings

- change the encoding for Estonian from latin4 to latin1, since it
  appears to be more suitable.

- add support for ae fonts (emulation of T1 encoding with OT1 fonts).
This is useful for creating pdf files in T1 encoding

- add support for dvipdfm

- when passing a file name as argument from command line, the
extension `.lyx' is added if necessary

- insert error insets in the documents when there have been unknown
  tokens in the file

- new class `kluwer'; update to hollywood class

- the class encts has been renamed to entcs (stupid typo!) and
  slightly updated

- updates to the introduction document and the Italian user guide

- updates to the Russian, Finnish and Hebrew localizations

** Bugfixes

- faster loading of large files (should now be proportional to file size)

- fix positioning of error insets when running LaTeX

- fix bug where latex would not be re-run if no depfiles were changed,
  but the .dvi was removed

- fix bug where symbol fonts (Greek letters...) would not show in
math when using scalable fonts. This is really a bug in Mandrake
  and Redhat fonts.

- fix possible crash when the cursor is between two spaces and a
  selection is begun

- fix reading under unix of lyx files produced under windows (was
  actually not fixed in 1.1.6fix3)

- fix problem where document is marked `changed' when going in/out an
  empty tabular cell

- fix the logic of quote insertion after '-', '[' and '{'

- fix generation of an extra space after an inset in linuxdoc creation

- make tables in DocBook sgml conformant

- do not ignore newline/hfill chars when copying to the clipboard

- fix insertion of \Upsilon in the math editor

- fix crash if banner-file was not found

- the `SubSection' layout of the cv class has been renamed to
  `Subsection'

- fix compilation with gcc 2.8.x

- improve the rpm spec file

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.2.0 is there!

2002-05-29 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

After too long a wait, the LyX team are pleased to announce the new stable
release, 1.2.0.

This release has far too many bugfixes and new features to list
comprehensively, but some are listed below.

You can download LyX 1.2.0 here :

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.2.0.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.2.0.tar.gz

Prebuild binaries (mainly rpms for linux distributions) are available
at
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.2.0/

Note that there is no patch, due to the amount of changes.

If you find what you think is a bug in LyX 1.2.0, you may either
e-mail the LyX user's mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), or open
a bug report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org

If you're having trouble using the new version of LyX, or have a question,
first check out http://www.lyx.org/help/, and e-mail the LyX user's list if you
can't find an answer there.

New features

Major improvements have been made to the handling of "insets" such as
footnotes, margin notes, and figure floats. A new minipage facility has been
added to make minipage management easy and powerful. Float parameters can be
set on a per-float basis now. Notes insets can contain arbitrary objects.

A new ERT mode replaces the old LaTeX font and LaTeX environment method of
1.1.6. This allows the user to fold LaTeX text away just like a float, and
supports both short and long sections of LaTeX commands in an intuitive manner.

The speed and usability problems with tables that remained in 1.1.6 have almost
all been fixed.

A powerful new graphics system has been included. This allows the user to set
up converters to allow previews of any input format (for example, LyX can
display inline previews of figures generated from Grace). Many other
improvements to the graphics code has been made.

Support for natbib citations has been added, and more facilities have been
added (such as the ability to search).

The math editor has been mostly rewritten, leading to many new features, such
as :

- possibility to display all standard latex and amsmath symbols (and
also the \mathcal, \mathbb, and \mathfrak fonts) as long as the
relevant fonts have been made available to the X server

- support for many amsmath features

- GUI support provided for many more features

- (Better) support for nested macros

Many dialogs and other LyX features have had major usability improvements.

Other new features include document bookmarks, parsing LaTeX pre-ambles on
LaTeX import, ligature break support, an English thesaurus, and more.

New document classes dtk, ltugboat, spie and svprobth.

Bug fixes
-

A large number of math editor fixes have been made.

A number of obscure drawing errors and crash problems have been fixed, and
several problems with LaTeX output from LyX documents no longer occur.

The problems affecting figure previews, due to ghostscript and xforms,
no longer apply.

A work around for long tab names in dialogs has been included.

Various miscellaneous fixes.

Upgrading from earlier LyX versions
---

You should have no problems upgrading from LyX versions 1.1.5 and 1.1.6. It is
nevertheless recommended that you keep backups of important documents. Most
documents will load in 1.2.0 without problems. Older versions of LyX cannot
read documents saved with LyX 1.2.0.

If you are having problems displaying figures in LyX, make sure you have a
recent version of the ImageMagick package installed.

There are some (rare) problems with older documents, especially concerning
floating figures and the use of minipages. Please read the UPGRADING file for
more information on this.

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.2.1 is released

2002-08-21 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

We are glad to announce the release of LyX 1.2.1.

LyX 1.2.1 is a maintenance release which fixes many bugs in version
1.2.0. We hope in this way to enhance world happiness, allowing the
developers to continue busily to prepare the next major release
1.3.0. There are a lot of fixes in there, and upgrading is highly
recommended.

In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what
http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject:

LyX is an advanced open source document processor that encourages an
approach to writing based on the structure of your documents, not their
appearance. LyX lets you concentrate on writing, leaving details of
  visual layout to the software.

LyX runs on many Unix platforms (including MacOS X), OS/2, and under
Windows/Cygwin. Note that all these ports use the same xforms interface
and therefore need an X server.

You can download LyX 1.2.1 here :

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.2.1.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.2.1.tar.gz

Prebuild binaries (mainly rpms for linux distributions) are available
at
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.2.1

If you already have LyX 1.2.0 sources, you may want to apply the
following patch instead
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/patch-1.2.1.gz

If you find what you think is a bug in LyX 1.2.1, you may either
e-mail the LyX user's mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), or open
a bug report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org

If you're having trouble using the new version of LyX, or have a question,
first check out http://www.lyx.org/help/, and e-mail the LyX user's list if you
can't find an answer there.

** Updates

- it is now possible to build LyX with xforms 1.0rc4 (and probably 1.0
  when this gets released)

- partial rewrite of the find & replace feature. This should solve most of
  the performance problems

- new option `keep aspect ratio' in graphics dialog

- revert to the old behaviour when creating new floats (figure,
table...): the empty paragraph in the float now is a caption. It
seems that 1.2.0 behaviour was confusing too many people

- it is now possible to set the float placement parameters to
  "document defaults"

- when the cursor is inside a collapsible inset, `Edit>Open/close
float' will leave it after the inset after closing it (this should
  help entering of ERT insets)

- update Finnish, Danish, French and Russian localizations

- update Tutorial to 1.2.x features

- better support for entering Cyrillic and Greek alphabets

- cleanup shortcuts for section layouts. Starred versions are now
obtained by prepending a * to the section number (M-p asterisk 0, ...,
  M-p asterisk 6)

- add keyboard shortcuts to the Documents menu

- support the numpad direction keys as equivalent to normal cursor
  keys

- it is now possible to specify a non-existent file name on the command
line and have this file created for you

- new class cl2emult; update template for IEEEtran; small update to
  heb-article and hollywood textclasses

** Bug fixes

- fix positioning of cursor after undo

- fix bug where error insets were not correctly removed

- fix some cursor bugs with right-to-left languages

- fix Arabic text rendering

- fix opening of a bibitem inset in a RTL paragraph

- do not open/collapse collapsible insets on mouse button 3

- fix a crash when using iso10646-1 encoding

- fix bug where using case changing commands on the last word of a
paragraph would change the whole document (without any undo possible!)

- fix performance bugs when selecting with the mouse

- in commands that operate on words (Insert>Index...), make sure not
  to include insets in words

- save preamble too when using 'save as document defaults' in document
  layout dialog

- fix startup of LyX when Turkish locale is in effect

- fix latex output when there is a font change around a float or a
tabular (this fixes compatibility with some 1.1.6 files)

- re-read correctly graphics insets when file name contains a comma

- fix latex output when the name of a graphics file contains several "."

- always pass filenames without extension to latex, so includegraphics
can decide which extension is the right one

- fix rotation angle of images to be the same as in latex output

- fix the graphics inset file browser to use the right list of
extensions (instead of list of formats)

- fix support for 1.1.6 graphics files scaled as percentage of width
  or height

- fix handling of 'no display' option in 1.1.6 figure insets

- handle correctly fig and epsi files

- handle correctly zipped eps files (others worked well)

- fix the default rotation origin for graphics inset

- fix the default tgif format entry to use .obj as file extension and
  not .tgif

- fix reading of xpm files produced by some versions of imagemagick

- fix conversion of some eps files

- disable direct handling of ps files by the xforms image loader

- do not ignore zero-length vertical spacing with 'keep' flag

- fix drawing problems

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.2.2 is released

2002-12-17 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

We are glad to announce the release of LyX 1.2.2.

LyX 1.2.2 is a maintenance release. It is a recommended upgrade from
1.2.0 or 1.2.1, especially since it fixes a few bugs introduced in
1.2.1.

You can download LyX 1.2.2 here :

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.2.2.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.2.2.tar.gz

Prebuild binaries (mainly rpms for linux distributions) should soon be
available at
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.2.2

If you already have LyX 1.2.1 sources, you may want to apply the
following patch instead
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/patch-1.2.2.gz

If you find what you think is a bug in LyX 1.2.2, you may either
e-mail the LyX user's mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), or open
a bug report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org

If you're having trouble using the new version of LyX, or have a question,
first check out http://www.lyx.org/help/, and e-mail the LyX user's list if you
can't find an answer there.

** Updates

- LyX builds with the newly released xforms 1.0. Actually, it is
advised to use this version of xforms, since it fixes many bugs and
support for older versions will probably be dropped in LyX 1.3.0

- selecting a word by double clicking now sets the X clipboard (like
  when dragging the mouse)

- it is now possible to specify the arguments for viewers; in
particular, this means that it is possible to use browsers which
require a file: URL as HTML viewers (mozilla is used as default if
  found)

- when a new LyX version is launched, the Edit>Reconfigure tool is
automatically invoked; this should avoid many problems with users
who are not aware that it is needed

- when changing the current layout with the toolbar, the corresponding
keyboard binding is shown in the minibuffer

- in hebrew language, the key " now inserts a typewriter quote (since
other quotes do not make sense in hebrew)

- Insert>Lists & TOC>Bibtex Reference uses style 'plain' by default

- new class ijmpd; update cl2emult, llncs and foils textclasses

- update sciword bindings

- small cleanup of UserGuide and FAQ; update to German, French and
  Russian documentation; new Hebrew tutorial

- update french, german, russian, finnish and danish localization of
  the interface

- fix lockup when changing the layout of several paragraphs at the
same time (and the layout of the first paragraph is already correct)

- fix possible endless repainting when a tabular is larger than the
  workarea

- fix bug with graphics files which name contain a '.'

would not be read back from the lyx file

- do not output labels in latex when numbering is off

- harmonize the behavior of delete and backspace in main text,
insettext, and tabulars, i.e. don't put stuff into the clipboard

Announce: LyX 1.3.0 released.

2003-02-10 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

[Sorry about the delay, it seems that this message was not sent to the
announce list at the time of the release -- JMarc]

Public release of LyX version 1.3.0
===

We are glad to announce the release of LyX 1.3.0.

As with the previous major version 1.2.0, many things make this new
release an exciting one. One of the major projects that has been going
on behind the scenes is the so-called GUI-independence project. We are
glad to announce that version 1.3.0 shows the first results of this.
LyX now comes in two flavours: Qt-LyX and xforms-LyX!

Although this is the most visible change in version 1.3, this should not
hide the fact that the `under the hood' changes to the code have again
been very important. A detailed list can be found below.

In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what
http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject:

LyX is an advanced open source document processor that encourages an
approach to writing based on the structure of your documents, not their

first check out http://www.lyx.org/help/, and e-mail the LyX users' list
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) if you can't find an answer there.

Enjoy!

The LyX team.

New features

** Qt frontend

This is of course the most visible new feature. This frontend supports
either Qt 2.x or 3.x and is mostly feature complete. Note that some
of the dialogs are slightly different in design, but are generally
functionally equivalent.

** Xforms frontend

The advent of the Qt frontend does not mean that the historical xforms
frontend is dead. Actually, it is still the one which is the best
implemented, because we have had more time to polish it. In this release,
most of the dialogs have been redesigned to be tighter.

Note also that the xforms library has been very recently updated to
version 1.0. This version has been released under the LGPL (Lesser
General Public License), and the availability of the source means that
many bugs that have been plaguing LyX have been fixed in xforms. You
are advised to upgrade to xforms 1.0 to enjoy all these new fixes.
In fact, LyX 1.3.0 no longer supports versions of xforms older than 0.89.5.
Moreover, support for xforms older than 1.0 will be removed in the next
release. You have been warned ;-)

In most cases the dialogs have been designed to make it impossible to input
invalid parameters. The exception to this rule is the input of length data.
Power LaTeX users can still input obtuse "glue lengths", but the widgets are
highlighted in red if this input is invalid or incomplete. This visual
feedback makes it easy to see why LyX won't allow you to Apply your changes.

** Gnome frontend

Unfortunately, the development of the Gnome frontend has mostly
stopped recently and we have therefore chosen to disable it. We
strongly invite anyone willing to revive this port to volunteer on the
developer's list.

** Instant preview

preview-latex is an emacs package for LaTeX that allows "instant previews"
of LaTeX code, so you can immediately see the visual rendering of the
LaTeX in the document. Its project home page can be found at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/preview-latex. With the help of David
Kastrup, the author, LyX 1.3.0 can harness this functionality to
allow instant previews in the LyX window of math equations and
figures. This feature can be immensely useful, ensuring that the
rendering of your equation will look right in the final output. The
preview is only displayed (if enabled) when you're not editing the
actual equation, so it's unobtrusive too.

** Math editor

There have been a few visible and some not-so-visible changes. On the
visible side we have better visual feedback regarding the structure of
a formula, showing the nesting by small purple decorations in the
formula

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.3.4 is released

2004-02-19 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Public release of LyX version 1.3.4
===

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.3.4.

This is a maintenance release which improves upon 1.3.3 in
five main areas:
  * It adds support for old files from LyX 0.10.x or 0.12.x;
  * Lyx documents can now be opened and edited even if
they use text classes not present in your latex installation;
  * New Qt features have been added (improved selection,
drag-and-drop);
  * Mac OS X support is much improved;
  * The interface and documentation localization have
been polished.

The complete list of improvements and fixes can be found at the end of
this message.

In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what
http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject:

LyX is an advanced open source document processor that encourages
an approach to writing based on the structure of your documents,
not their appearance. LyX lets you concentrate on writing, leaving
details of visual layout to the software.

LyX runs on many Unix platforms, OS/2, and under Windows/Cygwin
(this port requires an X server). It can also run natively on Mac
OS X, thanks to the Qt/Mac library.

You can download LyX 1.3.4 here (the .bz2 are compressed with bzip2,
which yields smaller files) :

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.3.4.tar.gz

ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.3.4.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.3.4.tar.bz2

and it should propagate shortly to the following mirrors (which will also host
the .bz2 versions):

Prebuilt binaries (mainly rpms for linux distributions) should soon be
available at

** Updates

- it is now possible to open documents which use a textclass for
which no LaTeX support is installed. The documents can be normally
edited, but they can of course be neither previewed nor printed. Note
that the format of the file .lyx/textclasses.lst has changed as a
consequence and it is therefore not possible to use LyX 1.3.4 and an
earlier version with the same .lyx/ directory.

- add support for drag-n-drop opening of lyx files from your favourite
  file manager [Qt only]

- add support for intelligent scrolling with the mouse cursor [Qt only]

- improvements in LyX/Mac: support for opening files with LyX in
finder; the LyX.app bundle can now be moved around and is
self-contained with its own fonts (for math equations), support
  files, and PATH

- add support for \boldsymbol in the math editor

- enable lyx to read documents from versions 0.10 and 0.12

- improve support for LaTeX documentclasses: new agums (generic style
for first-time submissions to AGU editors) and g-brief2 (a nice
letter class) textclasses; allow optional arguments in Author,
AuthorAdress and Thanks styles for the elsart layout; add
  Affiliation layout to jgrga textclass

- improve documentation for some languages: basque (new Extended
Manual and User Guide; updated Intro and Tutorial), german
(updated User Guide) and norwegian (new Intro)

- update basque, danish, finnish, french, german, italian, nynorsk,
romanian, spanish and slovenian interface localizations

- remove localization for the following languages, since they were too
incomplete to be useful: bulgarian, catalan, czech, hebrew,
  hungarian, portuguese, swedish, turkish, walloon

** Bug fixes

- fix a security problem where an evil .lyx file could cause
arbitrary commands to be executed during processing

- fix a crash when saving a file containing a table (only with some
  compilers) [Bug #1415]

- fix a crash in the math editor when selecting up/down close to
  subscript insets

- several fixes related to old files: silence a bogus warning about
encoding; fix conversion of tables (out of range error)

- fix warnings for docbook counters

- enable the file dialog to open files with non-latin filenames [Qt only]

- allow the use of some paper sizes (A3, B3

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.3.5 is released

2004-10-06 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Public release of LyX version 1.3.5
===

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.3.5.

This is mainly a bugfix release, with few notable user-visible
improvements. However, we would like to highlight two fixes in particular:
  * Nested documents (with Insert>Include File...), which have been
broken since LyX 1.2.0, should now work properly, including the
case where the files are in different directories.

** Updates

- Add a new textclass, svglobal. It is needed for various
Springer Verlag journals for which no specific class exists.

- Add a new bindings file mac.bind for LyX/Mac.

- The script used to control the generation of bitmap images for use
in 'Instant Preview' of math equations has been re-written in python.
Windows users now have some chance of getting Instant Preview to
  work for them.

- The built-in Qt dialogs are now correctly translated for the
languages that Qt supports [Qt >= 3.2 only].

- Add support for Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian and Nynorsk.

- Updated the Basque, Danish, German, Italian, Romanian, Russian (fix crash
when autosaving) and Spanish localizations. Updated the Basque and German
  documentation.

** Bug fixes

* Document input/output:

- Partly fix the handling of included files. External insets are still not
  working correctly [bug #605].

- Fix nesting of language change commands, especially important for
  Arabic [bugs #1225, #1404].

- Fix missing line break in front of \end{...} in some cases [bug #1225].

  special characters [bug #1526].

- Prevent clashes with LaTeX packages defining "\boldsymbol" [bug #1498].

- Make import of the preamble of LaTeX files more robust [bug #1584].

- Fix handling of floats and counters in svjog and svprobth
  textclasses [bug #1430].

- Fix handling of counters in the scrlettr and scrlttr2 classes.

- Fix off-by-one-error which caused LyX to choose the wrong custom margin
  package.

- Remove extra spaces around math insets in plain text output.

- Quote shell variables correctly in the generated sh script used
to control the conversion of graphics images to a loadable format.
  Ditto for the convertDefault.sh script.

* User Interface:

- Use opening quotation marks after an opening square bracket.

- Fix the toggling of the short title inset in some cases.

- When the autodetection of latex classes cannot be done for some
reason, provide a sensible list of textclasses.

- Honor correctly the various locale-related environment variables when
  looking for translated help files.

- Prevent activation of the Ok and Apply buttons in the reference
dialog when simply manipulating the list of references in the dialog.

- Set the default button

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.3.6 is released, with native Windows support

2005-07-16 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Public release of LyX version 1.3.6
===

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.3.6.

Unix and MacOSX users should consider this to be a bugfix release.

To Windows users, however, LyX 1.3.6 is the first version of LyX
to support the platform officially. This means that we've put a huge
effort into squashing those bugs that were present in Ruurd Reitsma's
unofficial ports to Windows. Large chunks of the code base have been
touched in an attempt to resolve these problems so whilst we're
confident that LyX/Win 1.3.6 will be the best ever version of LyX on
Windows, we cannot say that it's bug free.

We would like to highlight three fixes in particular:
  * It is now possible to typeset files which reside in a directory with
spaces in its name; this requires a modern TeX implementation (such
as teTeX 3.0).
  * It is possible to use Ctrl-PageDown and Control-PageUp (-tab
and -backtab with Qt/Mac) to switch between the open documents.
  * LaTeX-type accents, ligature breaks and hyphenation marks are now
considered as part of words

** Updates

- It is now possible to typeset files which reside in a directory with
spaces in its name; this requires a modern TeX implementation (such
  as teTeX 3.0).

- Implement new functions buffer-next and buffer-previous that allow
to cycle through open buffers; they are respectively bound to
Ctrl-PageDown and Control-PageUp (except with mac bindings, where
-tab and -backtab are used). [bugs 515 and 1639]

- LaTeX-type accents (which are used when converting from 7bit latex
documents or when a given accented letter does not exist in the
document encoding) are now considered as part of words; the same
holds for ligature breaks and hyphenation marks. This impacts word
level operation like selection by double-click or index entry
  defaults.

- The converters defined in the lyxrc.defaults and preferences files
can now use a "$$s" placeholder to tell LyX to look for the
converter in its support directories. A typical example is:

  \converter lyxpreview ppm "python $$s/scripts/lyxpreview2ppm.py" ""

- The ``annote'' field of BibTeX entries is now shown in citation preview.

- it is now possible to change current font to boldsymbol through the math
  panel. [Qt only]

- update the aastex textclass to AASTeX 5.2

- new Turkish translation.

- Files from the 1.4 development branch of LyX and tex2lyx can now be
converted by lyx2lyx. The conversion is not perfect for all new features,
but files containing only features supported by LyX 1.3.x can be converted
  back and forth without problems.

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.3.7 is released

2006-01-17 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Public release of LyX version 1.3.7
===

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.3.7.

We hope that this will be the last release in the 1.3.x series. In
addition to many bug fixes, the following improvements are worth
noting:

- LyX 1.3.7 is able to read all LyX files up to file format 245,
the format that we anticipate will be used by the forthcoming LyX 1.4.0.

- The windows version has received some polish, in particular in the
installer and in the handling of file names.

All current 1.3.x users are encouraged to upgrade to this version.

The complete list of improvements and fixes can be found at the end of
this message.

In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what
http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject:

LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing

LyX is for people that write and want their writing to look great,
right out of the box. No more endless tinkering with formatting
details, 'finger painting' font attributes or futzing around with page
boundaries. You just write. In the background, Prof. Knuth's legendary
TeX typesetting engine makes you look good.

On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output -- or
richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced -- looks like
nothing else. Gone are the days of industrially bland .docs, all
looking similarly not-quite-right, yet coming out unpredictably
different on different printer drivers. Gone are the crashes 'eating'
your dissertation the evening before going to press.

LyX is stable and fully featured. It is a multi-platform, fully

LyX 1.4.1 is released

Public release of LyX version 1.4.1

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.4.1. This is a bug fix
release, but some of the bugs were big. In particular:

 - fix the huge memory consumption and corresponding sluggishness with
documents containing many graphics or `instant preview' snippets.

 - fix slow screen update with nested insets, particularly with LyX/Mac.

 - fix the delay when exiting from a math inset.

 - let the change tracking code track paragraph breaks too.

Also, this will be the first 1.4 release with a windows installer.

See the file RELEASE-NOTES for some known problems in this release.

ANNOUNCE: LyX 1.4.2 is released

2006-07-13 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Public release of LyX version 1.4.2
===

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.4.2. This is a bug fix
release that improves performance, stability and native OS support.
Notable new features include:

- LyX now automatically uses file viewers and editors set at OS level
[Windows and Mac OS X only].

- The windows installer has been completely rewritten.

- A new function buffer-toggle-compression (and corresponding entry in
the Document menu) has been added to change whether the file will be
  compressed on disk or not.

- A "LaTeX (pdflatex)" output format has been added. This new output
format produces .tex files that are suitable for pdflatex, including
figure conversion to png, pdf or jpeg instead of eps.

See the file RELEASE-NOTES for some known problems in this release.

In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what
http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject:

LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing
based on the structure of your documents, not their appearance. It
is released under a Free Software / Open Source license.

It is a multi-platform, fully
internationalized application running natively on Unix/Linux, the
   Macintosh and modern Windows platforms.

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.4.3. This is a bug fix
release that improves stability and MS Windows support.
Notable new features include:

- The windows port does not need a MSys (unix-like tools) installation
  anymore.

- A new function inset-dissolve has been added to delete an text inset
and put its contents in the enclosing text; this can be
accessed (like in the math editor) by pressing Backspace at the
start of an inset, or Delete at the end.

- Many crashes have been fixed, in particular for systems based on

What's new in version 1.4.3?

** Updates:

- All shell scripts have been translated to python so sh.exe is no
longer needed. That's a big plus for the Windows port.

- Implement inset-dissolve feature; this can be accessed (like in
mathed) by pressing Backspace at the start of an inset, or Delete at
  the end (bug 2201).

- Add buttons for \intop and \ointop to the math panel (bug 2698)

- Native support for \phantom, \hphantom and \vphantom in mathed (bug 1473).

- Some small updates to the documentation.

- Update Basque, Czech (new), French, German (bug 2718), Hungarian,

Public release of LyX version 1.4.4
===

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.4.4. This is of course
a bug fix release, but some new features sneaked in, among which:

- Outline support: it is now possible to move around parts of
documents in the Table of Contents dialog.

- Add new UI settings default-autotoolbars and default-alltoolbars
allowing to select what toolbars are active or shown automatically.

- Improved documentation.

- Speed improvments, especially on windows.

This is probably going to be the penultimate 1.4.x release before LyX
1.5.0, which will be made available as a first beta version later this
week. Before the release of the final 1.5.0, a least one 1.4.5 version
that is able to read the 1.5 format will be released.

LyX version 1.5.0 (beta 2) is released

2007-04-23 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Public release of LyX version 1.5.0 (beta 2)
===

We are glad to announce the release of LyX 1.5.0 (beta 2).

Compared with the previous beta release we have fixed several bugs and
added some graphical improvements:
 * A new math toolbar replaces the old (faithful) math panel.
 * The converter file cache can be now configured in the graphical interface.
 * The TOC dialog is now a dock widget, embedded in the main window.

Apart from the described major changes, several minor improvements of
the user interface have been made, such as:

 - Syntax highlighting for the user preamble and the LaTeX log file
 - Better parsing of BibTeX databases (in the citation dialog)
 - Support optional argument for environments

Compared with the latest stable release this is the culmination of 1
year of hard work, and we sincerely hope this you will enjoy the
results. The changes are too numerous to summarize in a few words,
with initial unicode support as the flagship of new features, jump
directly to the end of this message if you want to know more.

As usual with major releases, a lot of work that is not directly
visible has taken place. The core of LyX has seen more cleanups and

What's new in version 1.5.0 (beta 2)?

* Unicode

LyX 1.5's big goal was to use unicode internally and so resolve a slew
of existing problems with special characters and non-alphabetic
languages. LyX 1.5 is able to output unicode (in addition to
encodings current available), so that you can use LaTeX's new utf8
encoding or such brand new typesetting systems as XeTeX.
Since the change to unicode touched much of the code base and some
areas still need a cleanup it is very likely that some bugs related to
the unicode transition still exist. Please have a look at the Known
bugs in LyX 1.5 page if you encounter a bug that seems to be related
to unicode. If it's not there, then please report it to the lyx-devel
mailing list.

Public release of LyX version 1.5.0 (release candidate 1)

We are glad to announce the release of LyX 1.5.0 (release candidate 1).

We encourage users to try this release candidate and report
any feedback or problems to lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org.

The difference to the last beta release is due to bug fixes only,
no new features are allowed at this stage of development. The only
exception to this rule is the addition of Farsi as a supported language
since the available patch was not integrated in the previous release.

Compared with the latest stable release, this is the culmination of

richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced -- looks like
nothing else. Gone are the days of industrially bland .docs, all
looking similarly not-quite-right, yet coming out unpredictably
different on different printer drivers. Gone are the crashes 'eating'
your dissertation the evening before going to press.

LyX is stable and fully featured. It is a multi-platform, fully
internationalized application running natively on Unix/Linux and the
   Macintosh and modern Windows platforms.

You can download LyX 1.5.0rc1 here (the .bz2 are compressed with
bzip2, which yields smaller files):

ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/lyx-1.5.0rc1.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/lyx-1.5.0rc1.tar.bz2

Note that due to the amount of changes no patch is provided to upgrade
from version 1.4.4.

Prebuilt binaries (rpms for linux distributions, Mac OS X and Windows
installers) should soon be available at
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/

If you find what you think is a bug in LyX 1.5.0rc1, you may either
e-mail the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel @ lists.lyx.org), or open
a bug report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org

If you're having trouble using the new version of LyX, or have a question,
first check out http://www.lyx.org/help/. If you can't find the answer there,
e-mail the LyX users' list (lyx-users @ lists.lyx.org).

What's new in version 1.5.0 (release candidate 1)?

* Unicode

* Integrated CJK support

The very first result of the Unicode transition is that we have finally
merged in the externally maintained CJK-LyX branch.
The languages Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are now supported in
the user interface.
Note that from now on, former encoding settings for these languages
done via ERT or the document preamble will lead to LaTeX-errors!

* Multiple views of the same buffer

LyX can now display multiple views of the same buffer. I.e., you can
now open a single document in multiple windows and work on different
parts of it synchronously.

* Outliner and embedded TOC

LyX has another long-awaited feature: a basic outliner mode, in which
you can move chapters and sections around in the Table of Contents
dialog. (The outliner has been backported and was released with LyX

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.5.0 is released

2007-07-31 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Public release of LyX version 1.5.0
===

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.5.0.

Since the announcement of release candidate 2, we have fixed bugs and
we have updated the documentation.

Following the ad hoc tradition of 1.5.0 pre-releases, called
respectively Ruby (alpha), Towny (beta) and Quinta ("farm" in
Portuguese for the release candidates) this release starts the Vintage
selection that is (will be) the 1.5 series.

LyX 1.5.0 is the culmination of 15 months of hard work since the
release of the LyX 1.4 series. We sincerely hope you will enjoy the
result. The changes are too numerous to summarize in a few words, but
initial unicode support is the flagship among the new features. See
the end of this announcement for further details.

As usual with a major release, a lot of work that is not directly
visible has taken place. The core of LyX has seen more cleanups and
some of the new features are the direct results of this work.

The file RELEASE-NOTES lists some known issues with this release
compared to the current stable release (LyX 1.4.5). An updated list of
issues might later be found at http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/ReleaseNotes

In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what
http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject:

LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing
based on the structure of your documents, not their appearance. It
is released under a Free Software / Open Source license.

Gone are the days of industrially bland .docs, all

and it should propagate shortly to the following mirrors (which will
also host the .bz2 versions):

from version 1.4.5.

Prebuilt binaries (rpms for linux distributions, Mac OS X and Windows
installers) should soon be available at
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/bin/1.5.0/

As confusing as it is, two sets of installers are available to windows
users:
 * LyX-1.5.0-Installer.exe and LyX-1.5.0-Installer-bundle.exe;
 * LyX-1.5.0-AltInstaller.exe and LyX-1.5.0-AltInstaller-Complete.exe.
The former is our official installer and the latter was previously known
as LyXWinInstaller. Please feel free to try either of them. Feedback
and bug reports on both installers are welcome because they will help
the merge of the two installers, which is expected to happen during the
1.5.x series of LyX development.

If you find what you think is a bug in LyX 1.5.0, you may either

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.5.1 is released

2007-08-04 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Public release of LyX version 1.5.1
===

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.5.1. It includes a
few bug fixes and, more importantly, fixes a bug where files produced
with the Document>Compressed option on would be malformed on windows.
It was therefore decided to revert to the trusty 1.4.x code in this
area and release 1.5.1 sooner than anticipated.

All 1.5.0 users are urged to upgrade to 1.5.1.

See the file RELEASE-NOTES for some known problems in this release.

[ANNOUNCE] Windows Installer for 2.3.0

2018-07-09 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Public release of LyX version 2.3.0 Windows Installer

We are pleased to be able to announce the release of Windows
installers for LyX 2.3.0.

Due to a bug in MiKTeX, installation of LyX 2.3.0 can sometimes
cause the MiKTeX installation to be corrupted. We highly recommend
that MiKTeX users update to the latest version *before* installing LyX
2.3.0. (If you run into problems, the solution will be to uninstall MiKTeX
and then re-install.)

(See https://github.com/MiKTeX/miktex/issues/82 for more info.)

Below is the original announcement for 2.3.0.

Public release of LyX version 2.3.0
==

With this release, LyX celebrates 22 years of existence. The 2.3 series
has a rich set of new features compared to the current stable series.

LyX 2.3.0 is the culmination of two years of hard work. An overview
of the new features can be found here:
  https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX23

You can download LyX 2.3.0 from https://www.lyx.org/Download/.

For Windows users, if you installed a pre-release of LyX 2.3.0, you
should uninstall that version before installing this newer release.

We hope you will enjoy the result!

If a file from an earlier version of LyX is opened *and saved* with
any version of 2.3.x, then the original file will automatically be
backed up. The backup file will be found in the backup directory, if one
is set under Tools> Preferences> Paths, or else in the same folder as
the original file, if no backup directory is set. The filename of the
backup file will be:
ORIGNAME-lyxformat-NUM.lyx~
where NUM is the LyX format number of the original file. In the case of
a 2.2.x file, this will be 508, but in the case of older files it will be
different.

The file lib/RELEASE-NOTES lists some known issues and problems compared
to the current stable releases (LyX 2.2.x). We strongly recommend that
packagers of LyX on various platforms and distributions read this file.

As with any major release, this one comes with a lot of new features but
also some bugs. If you think you have found a bug in LyX 2.3.0, either
email the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org),
or open a bug report at https://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome .
Please specify if the behavior you are reporting is different from behavior
in a previous LyX version.

If you have trouble using LyX or have a question, consult the
documentation that comes with LyX (under Help) and the LyX wiki, which you
will find at https://wiki.lyx.org/. You can also send email to the LyX
users'
list (lyx-users at lists.lyx.org).
