Re: broadway hollywood
Keep up the fantastic work, Garst. You're doing some of the most important development work for LyX, don't ever think otherwise. I most definitely and emphatically agree. `Useability' is a less glamourous but extremely important part of LyX development. That $300 brought another idea to my mind: What about creating a small company `Class Style, Inc' to create class and style files on commission? I suspect there are potential users out there that would be willing to pay even if the code is later released into the LyX space for free. On the other hand... Martin
LyX 1.0.0: Bug in \maketitle with multiple docs
Hi LyXers, when you put only the title stuff into a seperate file, \maketitle is not appended to the tex file. One has to put one line with a hard space at the end of the file to cause LyX to write the line \maketitle. Re: LyX Japanese Documents
Asger, is the proposal of Wed, 18 Mar 1998 still valid? I still think ElementType class you proposed is the best for addressing this problem. By letting ElementType getNextElementType() to return "Word" if the cursor is on CJK or other east Asian character, and if the next element is not a certain punctuation, we will be able to have a working line breaking algorithm. UnicodeData will be of use here. The principle is still valid. The implementaton will be different: Instead of having one getNextElementType that will handle all kinds of elements, I think we should introduce a separate iterator for each type. So, we will have a "breakPoint" iterator that will give us the points in the data structure where we can be a line break. This one will be able to support the line breaks that are needed for your situation. And the flow logic will use this one, so I think we have solved this problem for Asian languages. Greets, Asger
Re: Namespaces (was: string vs. LString)
Asger seems to want to make extensive use of namespaces and to a certain extent I can see that as being a good way to enforce the notion of ownership to the various modules. So we could have a gui namespace and an Inset namespace among others. If we then use namespaces in our code we can use namespaces from stl (which involves using different headers). Yes, I would like to use namespaces more. My feeling is that the bad things about global functions and variables does not exists anymore when you have namespaces. Suddenly, there is nothing wrong with having global functions and variables, and this change opens up some methods of coding that were previously packed away as bad coding style. With namespaces, I feel it's easier to let the code express what things are. For instance, the encoding facility is a global means of performing encoding conversions, that does not depend on any state or context. So I don't see why this feature should not just be exactly that in the code: an independent global function that does the conversion. Regarding whether we should *require* support for namespaces from the compiler or not: I have no real opinion on this. I'm sure that we can make things work without proper namespace support, and that is a good thing. The important thing is that the developers will be able to exploit the concept of namespaces, and if their compiler is up to it, get the extra safety from the compiler. I find it hard to make a list of things that we want from the compiler in advance. I'm more into the lazy style: Just code, and then take care of the problems when they appear. That's what we have been doing so far, and it seems to work pretty well. Of course, we are demanding more things from the compilers now, and it might turn out that we have to set some minimum requirements, but until we know more about the problems, it's hard to say what those are. Greets, Asger

better BibTeX support
Hey All, I just upgraded to the latest lyx-1_0_x cvs-sources and found that wonderfull new feature. (Well, I am sorry I don't have time to follow the list right now.) Two suggestions regarding the bibtex-entry-key-combobox (hey, I am German, we are used to use words two lines long, or so): - make it bigger Well, it would make live much easier to show approx 10 entries or so, and also make it wide enough to show the full keys - or probably just 1.5 times as wide as it is right now. Sorry, I won´t get into XForms any more, but probably it's quite easy for one of you guys. - sort the entries alphabetically. By taking a quick look at the sources this might be probably something for 1.1, when it uses a vector string , so you can just stable_sort that :-) Still, like it - and I will use it even with my moderatly big databases, I guess. The new reference feature and the new bibtex stuff are great. Now, is there any chance that we could put them together? In my thesis, I include the bibtex file in my main thesis.lyx. But if I try to insert a citation in one of the included files, the combobox has no entries. It would be really neat if the included file knew that its parent had a bibliography from bibtex. Perhaps part of the problem is that the citation popup disappears when you switch documents. Why does it disappear but the reference popup doesn't? Hm. If I have two unrelated files (i.e. not parent and child) and I open the references popup in one and then switch to the other file, I still have the references for the first file in the references popup. They stay until I hit Update. Should that update happen automatically when I go from one file to the next? (If I move between two *children* and type update, nothing happens, since they both have all of the references from their parent document.) -Amir

Bibkeys and multidoc (was Re: Multidocument fixes
On Mon, 12 Apr 1999, Amir Karger wrote: The new reference feature and the new bibtex stuff are great. Now, is there any chance that we could put them together? No, they are not the same thing. What I have just commited cleans a bit the bibtex code in the 1.0 way (using inset codes instead of browsing the generated latex code) and moved it to Buffer, since the bibkeys are buffer properties. This allowed me to use the same old trick to give multipart document support for bibkeys. How it works: 1. Be sure to have all the children their parent updated, poping up the cross reference list in the master doc. (can work also inserting a bibref in the parent). 2. Insert a citation anywhere in your document, it doesn't matter if the bibliography (or bibtex inset) is in the parent document or in any of the children. Perhaps part of the problem is that the citation popup disappears when you switch documents. Why does it disappear but the reference popup doesn't? Because when you want to insert a citation, the inset is inserted first. The popup depends on the existence of a citation inset. OTOH when inserting a reference, the popup appears first to let you choose from the list. Hm. If I have two unrelated files (i.e. not parent and child) and I open the references popup in one and then switch to the other file, I still have the references for the first file in the references popup. They stay until I hit Update. Should that update happen automatically when I go from one file to the next? well, this misfeature was used as a workaround before the sharing reference stuff, so I see no reason to not make it automatic. Re: Multidocument fixes
On Mon, 12 Apr 1999, Amir Karger wrote: The new reference feature and the new bibtex stuff are great. Now, is there any chance that we could put them together? In my thesis, I include the bibtex file in my main thesis.lyx. But all of my citations are given in the included files. If I try Insert-Citation in thesis.lyx, I get the list of all the citations from the bibtex file (neat!). But if I try to insert a citation in one of the included files, the combobox has no entries. It would be really neat if the included file knew that its parent had a bibliography from bibtex. These new features keep sneaking in. So given a little longer I'm sure it'll be made to work as you describe. Alejandro has committed some new changes overnight so maybe they cover this situation. Perhaps part of the problem is that the citation popup disappears when you switch documents. Why does it disappear but the reference popup doesn't? Well they both used to disappear and people complained that they couldn't use any dirty tricks to get references from other documents so I put reference popup back again. The reason the citation popup is hidden is that it is buffer-specific like a lot of other popups. For example, if you have a citation already in your document and you open the citation popup then switch documents what should LyX do? Insert in the new doc? Blindly change the old doc? I elected to hide such buffer-related popups and there are a quite a few of them. You'll also notice if you open the Document or Paper popups that they update to the new buffers settings. This scheme is fairly simple but not all popups have been converted in 1.0.x whereas most have been in 1.1.x where they have also been greatly modified. Hm. If I have two unrelated files (i.e. not parent and child) and I open the references popup in one and then switch to the other file, I still have the references for the first file in the references popup. They stay until I This is the dirty trick I mentioned above. hit Update. Should that update happen automatically when I go from one file to the next? (If I move between two *children* and type update, nothing happens, since they both have all of the references from their parent document.) I started looking at automatically updating and determining parent docs and such ages ago but never got finished. I suspect Alejandro's recent changes may be close to the functionality you describe. Sorry, I needed some /raggedleft's in the .cls files and small fixes in the .layout files The attached file untars in hollywood and has tex and layouts subdirs. I thought the /sloppy in the layout files would take care of stopping hyphenation, but when I looked at the ps view there were hyphenated lines. That's what I get for hurrying. LyX 1.0.0: Bug in \maketitle with multiple docs
Hi LyXers, when you put only the title stuff into a seperate file, \maketitle is not appended to the tex file. One has to put one line with a hard space at the end of the file to cause LyX to write the line \maketitle. UnicodeData will be of > use here.

So we could have a gui namespace and an > Inset namespace among others. If we then use namespaces in our code we > can use namespaces from stl (which involves using different headers). Of course, we are demanding more things from the compilers now, and it might turn out that we have to set some minimum requirements, but until we know more about the problems, it's hard to say what those are. better BibTeX support
By taking a quick look at the sources this might be probably something for 1.1, when it uses a vector< string >, so you can just stable_sort that :-) Still, like it - and I will use it even with my moderatly big databases, I guess. Hello, this is a very little patch for the array entry in the UserGuide.lyx document : it says that "M-x math-matrix" (is that specific to emacs keybindings?) and that one can modify an array (i.e. add columns or change alignment) by hand-modifying the .lyx file. Re: Multidocument fixes
The new reference feature and the new bibtex stuff are great. Now, is there any chance that we could put them together? In my thesis, I include the bibtex file in my main thesis.lyx. But all of my citations are given in the included files. If I try Insert->Citation in thesis.lyx, I get the list of all the citations from the bibtex file (neat!).

On Mon, 12 Apr 1999, Amir Karger wrote: > The new reference feature and the new bibtex stuff are great. Now, is there > any chance that we could put them together? > Perhaps part of the problem is that the citation popup disappears when you > switch documents. Why does it disappear but the reference popup doesn't? Because when you want to insert a citation, the inset is inserted first. The popup depends on the existence of a citation inset. OTOH when inserting a reference, the popup appears first to let you choose from the list. > Hm. Should that update happen automatically when I go from one file > to the next? well, this misfeature was used as a workaround before the sharing reference stuff, so I see no reason to not make it automatic. These new features keep sneaking in. So given a little longer I'm sure it'll be made to work as you describe. Alejandro has committed some new changes overnight so maybe they cover this situation. > Perhaps part of the problem is that the citation popup disappears when you > switch documents. Why does it disappear but the reference popup doesn't? > Hm. If I have two unrelated files (i.e. not parent and child) and I open > the references popup in one and then switch to the other file, I still have > the references for the first file in the references popup. I started looking at automatically updating and determining parent docs and such ages ago but never got finished. I suspect Alejandro's recent changes may be close to the functionality you describe. hollywood/broadway fixes
The main reason for this is that there is no single standard -- every University seems to have its own ideas of how a thesis should be setup. You should be able to do most of your thesis using the book class. Somebody mentioned some time ago on the list that they were working on a University of Columbia(?) thesis layout and template. So I've cc'd this to the list so hopefully they can respond. [...] > Maybe could I translate something , when I have some time ,what do you > think about ?? That would be great! There is noone else currently working on an Italian translation so you will need to check the "Non-English" page on the www.devel.lyx.org site for useful info on what different areas can be translated and how. There is plenty of useful info and instructions and if you get stuck, ask. Allan. (ARRae)
