Found it. I had __old__ (from 2007) ivritex installed in texmf-local.
Removing all traces of ivritex there made the use of OmegaHebrew
in TL17 working.

It works for me also on my system with TL 2017 (but it is not
up-to-date). I will update that TL 2017 at some point after 2.3.0 is
out.

If I remember correctly, --hebrew requires things that are not in TeX

Fine. Which font did you use in the manual test?

So, no showstopper from these tests.

The tests pass for me. I install Hebrew with

  install-tl-ubuntu --hebrew

I don't remember what that option actually does. I could look it up and
give the stand-alone commands if you're interested.

Actually I think that is the default now. See ef9a05de and 8a656d95. The
tests pass for me, both when compiling manually and with the ctests:

The problem here is referenced but missing LaTeX.png.

There is missing OmegaHebrew. And I don't know, what to do to install.
Using '\usepackage{culmus}' helped a little, but apparently i screwed
something, so that even with culmus I get errors.

With

I get

probabely missing a package. (Do you have the Skak fonts installed?)

These seem also rather exotic: knitr/sweave with XeTeX and system fonts in
Japanese. (Maybe missing characters?)
