I did that already. Here is what INSTALL says:

As of LyX version 1.2.0, you will need to have Xforms library and
header version 0.88 or 0.89. Version 0.89.6 is the one which works
best, but the old stable 0.88.1 version is still supported. On some
systems, such as linux ELF, there are shared library versions of the
Xforms library, which require an installation step to configure the

We'll do that in time (in the appropriate 1.2.x version). Currently
the configure script says:

  Version $lyx_cv_xfversion of xforms might not be compatible with LyX,
  since it is newer than 0.89. You might have slight problems with it.

I think it is enough.

We could also tell that xforms 1.0 will be supported when it is

What version of xforms are you using (I mean the RPM package version!) the
one 0.88 supplied from RH is buggy! You have to install another version and
I think you get the RPM from the lyx contrib directory (Jean-Marc?)

Your xforms binary was compiled against glibc's predecessor, not glibc. You
should upgrade your xforms library.

Hmm, I'm using the latest glibc from redhat (2.2.4).

Alas, note htat "failed to share colors" is not my real problem (or so I
think) - it's the first message that lyx outputs. My real problem is that the
main window appears, parts of it paint (like menus), but workspace painting
fails:

$ lyx -dbg `expr 1 + 2 + 8 + 16384 + 65536 + 262144`
Failed to share colors. Using private colormap

a lot of messages from various things...

Initializing form_character::combox...
Initializing form_character...done
Workarea event: DRAW

lyx: SIGSEGV signal caught

How to get the coredump?

Does your 486 have the same glibc version as the other machines?

It is highly likely that you have mismatched your xforms library with
the glibc version.

The attempt by xforms to report the error fails because the function
it called doesn't exist in your glibc.

Well did you try the -private or -shared flags?

Cannot allocate enough colors ;-)

Hmm, it looks like whatever I put an argument to depth doesn't make any
difference (putting invalid arguments is not detected either). Still same
SIGSEGV.

This is a xforms problem when it cannot allocate enough colors. Try
one of the color switches like -depth best, -shared, -private, -depth 8.

Hope this helps,

lyx 1.1.6 fix 4

2002-04-09 Thread Kuba Ober

Hi,
is lyx 1.1.6fix4 supposed to work on a 486 machine?
I've recompiled from source rpm (on a 686 machine so as not to wait ages)
using xforms-0.89-6, the package works fine on all other machines, but on my
486 laptop it bails out with a SIGSEGV just after startup. The main window
flashes for a moment and that's it. The last lines of debug output are

$ lyx -dbg `expr 1 + 2 + 8 + 16384 + 65536 + 262144`
Failed to share colors. Using private colormap

Initializing form_character::combox...
Initializing form_character...done
Workarea event: DRAW

lyx: SIGSEGV signal caught

It doesn't seem to leave a coredump anywhere. I'm using XFree86 4.2.0 from
RawHide (4.1.0 doesn't seem to work on that machine, 4.0.3 used to but I
upgraded), twm as window manager (tried under fvwm2 - doesn't seem to change
things).

I will try recompiling it at the 486 machine, just in case building the
.i386.rpm on an 686 could have broken something (doubt that, the notebook and
my desktop run same redhat version, all up-to-date).

In any case, any clues about how to enable coredumps in lyx?

Cheers,
Kuba
