 As a temporary "solution" I can put a symlink in /tmp/lyx_tmp??? pointing

  One possible solution is to set in your lyxrc file no to use the temp dir:

\use_tempdir false

  Then lyx will not use any temporary directory and all is ok...

Okay to make this work in LyX is even uglier than I imagined. The main
problem is that LyX doesn't give us the option of squeezing a line or two
of raw LaTeX in between the \begin{...} and the first \item. If we could
get a good solution to that we could also fix a few other minor problems
like adding toc entries for the Bibliography that would always give the
right page numbers. Anyway, in answer to your question here's an ugly
solution I came up with:

In the first item after the break insert the following as TeX:
[##.]\setcounter{enumi}{##}

where the ## is the number you want the enumeration to start at.

I've also written a \newcommand to add to your preamble to give you a
simpler way of using this scheme:

\newcommand{\setenumi}[1]{#1.\setcounter{enumi}{#1}}

In this case you just write as TeX:

[\setenumi{3}]

at the start of the first \item after the break in enumeration.

I've tried a bunch of stuff but I can't seem to figure out a way to record
the value of enumi from the last \item before the break. I can print the
value out at that \item but can't get a something simple like:

\let\savetheenumi=\value{enumi}

or other variations to work. Any others got ideas here?

you meant '>>'?

In my current $HOME/.lyx/lyxrc (1.0.4 which may not have changed since
1.0.1 or even 0.12) there already is a fax section.

No as that would attach it to an existing one :) and as much as I read
out from his mail he does not have a .lyx/lyxrc file :), but only the
.lyx/lyxrc.defaults.

Otherwise you should edit your .lyx/lyxrc file and add or edit that command :)

But thanks anyway maybe others would have used this and wonder why
lyx behaves different :)

yesterday I tried to view ps from within lyx, and I got the following message:

unknown device x11
postscript interpreter failed in main window

Any ideas?

You should look to what gs is linked to there is a gs.noX11 and a gs.X11

   Yes, I tried both. One showed nothing, the other kind of worked after I
   had an extension of tex.

Can you show us exactly what you do and what you get? I do

Insert -> Include file

Then select "Use input" and enter

okidoki.oki

and all is well; the content of my okidoki.oki file ("hello") is
included.

[##.]\setcounter{enumi}{##}

where the ## is the number you want the enumeration to start at.

I've also written a \newcommand to add to your preamble to give you a
simpler way of using this scheme:

\newcommand{\setenumi}[1]{#1.\setcounter{enumi}{#1}}

\let\savetheenumi=\value{enumi}

or other variations to work. Any others got ideas here?
