I can start LyX now, BUT: When I open my thesis-file (which is a bit
huge: 160 pages, at least 25 eps-graphics inside,...) lyx - and even the
KDE-(XWindow)System CRASHES after 10 to 20 seconds while lyx is still
loading my document (you know: all that stuff of rendering the eps-files
 etc...) ! :-(

This is a sure sign that something is wrong outside LyX's reach.
Your X should not go down no matter how badly LyX crashes.

Make sure your xforms are installed properly.

Maybe you could even try with another window manager to make sure it's
not KDE's fault.

Subject: quality .eps screenshots???

Hello
I desperately try to insert Linux desktop screenshots into my
LyX formatted thesis.
The problem is and was that I don't manage to generate .eps grayscale
(because B/W laserprinter)with enough quality. My fellow students would
laugh on me when comparing their sharp pictures inserted in Word :-((
So I tried both Gimp and Xv as advised in your ML archive under the thread
reference "Using GIF Images?" (especially by contributor C. Sawtell).
Unfortunately, the results seen and printed via GV5.50 are still awful.
What's the procedure to prove that LyX "can do it"?

Here I get good results using xwd, ImageMagick convert to eps
in grayscale and avoiding resizing in the \includegraphics
(i.e. convert to the required size using -geometry).
Example:
xwd foo.xwd
(click in the window to create the snapshot)
convert -colorspace GRAY -dither -geometry 50% foo.xwd foo.eps

Converting to png and using pdflatex should give good (better?) results.

I'm writing something up in article-style with 2 columns. There are

check the '%-page' box under 'width' in the inculde-figure dialog, the

If bitmap graphics is needed, perhaps the best way is to use pdflatex which can
directly include JPEG/PNG/TIFF images.
Unfortunately, the most recent stable version (1.1.5fix1) doesn't have PDF
support, so you will have to export the file as latex and run pdflatex
yourself (the CVS version does have PDF support).

lang=es retranslation?

2000-09-22 Thread Alvaro Tejero Cantero

Hi all,

Problem: LyX translation into spanish is not accurate. I can say it's even
plain wrong (typographical page layout terms are not correctly translated).

Problem #2: This translation has operational problems. i.e. you cannot open
the document menu with F10, when you say A4 it takes A3 (in papersize) and so
on. I find this is not acceptable in a sofware which maintains a very high
quality standard otherwise. The spanish version is simply not usable (up to
and including 1.1.5.fix1).

Solution #1 (particular): does anybody know how to get lyx in english,
without changing the LANG=es environment variable?.

Solution #2 (general) I will be glad to retranslate all the interface,
provided someone points out to me (offlist) the files to be edited and how to
incorporate them into the current development version.

Commentary:
Thank you all for LyX. I've been using it to take physics notes on the fly,
now for a year at faculty. You can download everything at p42.org (it's in
spanish and under GFDL).
