Problems with installation of Lyx 143-4 on windows xp
Hello, I tried to install lyx 143-4 on Windows xp using the network installation package. Everything runs fine, all the miktech is installed. When I try to open Lyx the dos-shell appears for half a second, as usually but then nothing happens... I rebooted but it didn't help Is there any solution. There is one thing: At the last installationscreen I am told that IEEEtran.cls is missing and will be installed from Random package repository. I don't get any message, whether this works but I think, this can't be the problem for the not running lyx. Thanks Robert

Pavel Sanda wrote: If it is something else than the above please tell us what is different. im not sure. it is a page with normal text and figure-float. in 1.3 it fits accurately in 1 page and in 1.4 gets the picture on the second page. If the figure float comes back to the first page when you introduce a bit of vertical spacing in it then the shifting was caused by the change I described. But it is not very likely IMHO. Otherwise it is something else. Georg

I have tried some methods before but have found problems with math equations and figures Try installing the program latex2rtf and reconfigure lyx. Problems installing spell checker using installer for llyx-143-4 - Help please!
This is the second time. No response the first time. Surely someone has used the lyx 143-4 installer. If not surely someone know who to contact. Anyway as I said before I am trying to install the latest version lyx-143-4 using the installer program and failed to download spellchecker. The message during the installation says 'failed to download English spell checker- would you like to try again'. Clearly problems accessing the host from the web. How do I install spellchecker separately once lyx has been set up? What is the procedure? Any suggestions as to what to do? Help please. Thanks Robert Try opening a DOS shell, switching to the LyX bin directory, and running lyx.exe there. The shell will stay open and maybe you can see what is going on. You can also try running with the debug option to get more info (including the dreaded 'lyx -dbg any', which will give you more messages than you could possibly want). Also, have a look in C:\Documents and Settings\your name here\Application Data\LyX1.4.x to see if the packages.lst and textclass.lst files were written there (and whether they are longer than zero bytes). If they are missing or zero-length, odds are the configuration script burped. The IEEEtran.cls message might be meaningful if you're behind a firewall or proxy server. There's a known bug where LyX looks for a missing class, MikTeX tries to install it automatically (but fails due to network issues), and the failure causes the configuration script to blink. /Paul

On Windows, it's located in IM root\config, so my guess is on your system it should be in /usr/local/ImageMagick/config (give or take what you named the ImageMagick directory). Along with delegates.xml, there should be coder.xml, colors.xml and several more configuration files. If you don't have delegates.xml, then ImageMagick did not install correctly. If you have it, there might be a permissions problem (?), or it might be corrupted. Since it's XML, you should be able to read it with whatever text viewer you use. I have added the $MAGICK_HOME variable, which was missing, and now convert works fine. There is a bug involving the interaction between LyX and the Finder. Two things you can do here; if the first thing doesn't work on its own, try the second as well. 1. From within the Finder, select any .pdf file. Do File Get Info... and change the Open with: drop-down list to something other than Preview, and then select Preview again. Then click on the Change all... button (confirming that you want to do this from the dialog that pops up). Now when you view your .lyx document as PDF, it should open in Preview. If this doesn't work, also do the following: 2. Within LyX, select LyX Preferences File Formats PDF. In the Viewer field, enter open (without the quotes), click on the Modify button and then on the Save button. Now this should fix your LyX problem. Bennett

Bennett

If the figure float comes back to the first page when you introduce a bit of vertical spacing in it then the shifting was caused by the change I described. But it is not very likely IMHO. Otherwise it is something else. Georg

I have tried some methods before but have found problems with math equations and figures Try installing the program "latex2rtf" and reconfigure lyx. You will now get a export->rtf option, and word will read the .rtf file. I am not sure this conversion is good though. Math and floating figures are areas where lyx simply is _better_ than word, so perfect conversion is impossible. Please note that lyx now exists in a windows version. So consider installing windows-lyx on your proofreader's computer. If they allow it. Helge Hafting

Yup, GS 8.51 is installed and runs smoothly from a shell. On 10/23/06, Paul A. If the conversion works, odds are the problem is with the LyX setup. If it fails, odds are the problem is with either the ImageMagick setup or whether it can find the GS library. /Paul

Here is the output (and the culprit): convert: UnableToOpenConfigureFile `delegates.xml'. convert: NoDecodeDelegateForThisImageFormat `EPF_Liga_Espanola.pdf'. convert: MissingAnImageFilename `test.ppm'. What seems to be happening??? P.S.: I have all the files of ImageMagick inside /usr/local/ On 10/23/06, Paul A. What seems to be happening??? P.S.: I have all the files of ImageMagick inside /usr/local/ The delegates file is a configuration file that tells ImageMagick how to convert from one format to another. On Windows, it's located in root>\config, so my guess is on your system it should be in /usr/local/ImageMagick/config (give or take what you named the ImageMagick directory). The other two messages are direct consequences of not being able to look into delegates.xml and find how to convert from PDF to something else. /Paul
Re: ImageMagick and OSX (PPC)
I have added the $MAGICK_HOME variable, which was missing, and now "convert" works fine. If I run LyX directly from the icon the rendering doesn't work, but if I run it from the command line with the debbuging graphics option, the rendering works. Weird!!! Any idea? On 10/23/06, Paul A. Omnibus explanation, for all reported problems: a gypsy cursed you? :-) What happens if you run LyX from the command line without any debugging options. If rendering works, then take a look at just what the icon is starting. It may somehow be creating an environment in which $MAGICK_HOME is undefined. /Paul

There is a bug involving the interaction between LyX and the Finder. Two things you can do here; if the first thing doesn't work on its own, try the second as well. 1. From within the Finder, select any .pdf file. Do File > Get Info... and change the "Open with:" drop-down list to something other than Preview, and then select Preview again. Then click on the "Change all..." button (confirming that you want to do this from the dialog that pops up). Now when you view your .lyx document as PDF, it should open in Preview. If this doesn't work, also do the following: 2. Within LyX, select LyX > Preferences > File Formats > PDF. In the Viewer field, enter "open" (without the quotes), click on the "Modify" button and then on the "Save" button. Now this should fix your LyX problem. Bennett
