Took 9 pages notes at a 2.5h PhD presentation yesterday. The nice thing is you
get the formatting done directly (eg use Description for Q) and can even make
shorter equations if you know the shortcuts.
After, press cmd R and you have nicely formatted documentation of the event.

You can of course do the same e.g. in Word, but I never manage to get
formatting to look good, and equations (even simple) are out of the question if
you do it on-the-fly.

I think LyX is marketed correctly as a document creator.

If you have time and are so inclined, you can create any kind or sort
of document with LyX. Save the template for future use and there it is,
almost magic next time. If needing anything at all, a few tweaks.

Many people say they just don't have time or can't be bothered to muck
about, or reinvent the wheel, trying to get some things to work with
LyX. Better, easier, faster to use another program that someone else
has had time to muck about with to get working.

I think that's true. But most document types, which are not very
extensive, that I require, can be or have been created with LyX by
someone else or myself, and tweaked as needed for each purpose. Very
often and graciously helped by those on this mailing list.

Be well,
Charlie

Note-taking applications

2019-01-10 Thread Rich Shepard

I lost my response to the thread on using lyx to take notes so I'm sending
this instead.

+1 on LyX being promoted as a GUI front end to LaTeX. There's no need to
be concerned about getting a wider audience. Those who want typeset
documents will be aware of LyX. Those who don't couldn't care less.

For taking notes there are literally dozens of text editors, including
emacs, joe, vim, and nano. If you want a GUI interface and the ability to
add more than characters take a look at KeepNote .
I've found it to be a handy tool. And, of course, one can set up a local
wiki for notes.

Agreed!

I also like to use LyX for taking notes, especially when those notes will
involve mathematical formulas and notation but also because of all the
keyboard shortcuts for sections and the like. It is also good for making
references in a straightforward manner.

However, I don't really think LyX should be marketed that way. Its main
purpose is still to be a front end for LaTeX. An incidental note on such
note-taking capabilities could be added somewhere on the website, I suppose.

I do use it for note-taking, and I agree it's good at it, but I'm pretty
sure there are other note-taking apps that are at least as useful
(including some with direct links to cloud storage?). To me LyX is first

I find it really nice to use for that purpose. And there’s no need to install
TeX and/or export to LaTeX if all you are using it for is to take notes.

Anyone else think LyX is great for taking notes and should be marketed as such?
