Hi Gordon,

I’m on a Mac and able to run LyX 2.3.6.2 on Monterey 12.6 - would you mind to
describe your problems with lyx2lyx in some detail?

Perhaps I’m able to help with fixing the problem on Mac.

Best regards,
Stephan

Sorry Gordon,

I have not used windows for several decades. Perhaps others can help. I am
pretty sure
lyx runs on windows.

I don't think a new PC is needed. Why not pick up a used PC and put a linux OS
on it?
That's what I have done for years. Lyx works fine.

Re: Cannot Create New Frame

2022-11-16 Thread lyx101 via lyx-users
Many thanks, John: a money-saving idea that comes with exactly what I want to
hear!

However, given my need for “black box” comfort/confidence at this stage in
life, I guess a PC with Windows 11 would be equally OK? Right?

PS: When I mentioned LyX-basic, that was to get around my Mac/LyX problems.

With a PC, and the accompanying lack of problems, it seems that LyX-basic will
be unnecessary.

Thanks to the LyX team!

With my thanks again, John; Gordon

Re: Cannot Create New Frame

2022-11-16 Thread lyx101 via lyx-users
Thanks, Scott,

Aged 4, I was dubbed a genius with a meccano set! Aged 21, I had an Honours
degree in Mechanical Engineering. Aged 85, and still pretty clever, LyX is THE
meccano set for my brain!

However, LyX does far more than I need. So I often think about helping develop
a "bullet-proof" LyX-basic. That is, I can show you everything that I can do
beautifully, and we progressively drop stuff that I — and most others, like
STEM students and teachers — will never need.

Of course, that might help me stay with Mac, at the same time bringing more
Macs to LyX …

But Scott, as I think further. Why don’t I — to put it simply — just buy a PC?
And more happily step up to 15 hours per day (occasionally) beginning tomorrow?

That’s what you’d do, right? Cheers; Gordon

Hi Gordon,

Ouch! That sounds really frustrating! I do not think you should buy a new
computer just because of this. We are working on releasing 2.4.0, and I wonder
if this will somehow work for you since it has a lot of improvements compared
to the version you're using.

Wow, 14 hours a day! I wonder if there is an entry in the Guiness Book of World
Records for LyX usage?

It is our goal that you should not have to know anything about Python, Unix,
Qt, C++, etc., to use LyX. Unfortunately, in practice it's hard to achieve that
since LyX has a lot of things it needs to work well and sometimes the parts
don't line up.

Best,
Scott

Hi Michela,

Unfortunately, we've seen a lot of strange issues reported by LyX users
upgrading to Ventura. Further, we have only one LyX developer whose main
operating system is macOS and I'm not even sure if they are on Ventura so I
don't know if there will be a fix anytime soon since it's hard to figure out
what the problem is and how to fix it. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience!
