Re: dvi and dvips pbs with lyx1.4.3 on mac ppc

2006-10-29 Thread Andrea Moneti

Hi again Paul,

At this point this is no longer a call for help, though any
suggestion is of course welcome ...

Upon further investigating I find the following:

1. upon opening the lyx file the following message appears in the
(console) log file:

0lyxpreview.dvi: No such file or directory
dvipng failed to generate images from 0lyxpreview.dvi

2. checking in the lyx temp buffer (/tmp/lyx_tmpdir.../
lyx_tmpbuf.../ , I find a file called 0lyxpreview.tex created and
processed when I opened by lyx file. The tex file contains the tex
of the equations; the processing produced aux, log, and pdf file
indeed to dvi file.

3. I run latex on that file I get a new pdf file and no dvi file

4. I check the latex command in /sw/bin: it is a link to pdfetex (!)
pdflatex is linked to the same, as is also pdftex, and I see nothing
that could be the traditional latex command, which produces the dvi
file.

Now I do the same with a file without equations (but with one figure):
- no error message in the console log when opeining the file
- nothing in the lyx tmp buffer
- export to dvi produces the dvi file and an eps file of the figure
in the working directory, as you stated in a previous message.

= so the problem clearly comes from the equations, and has to do
with tex rather than with lyx.

Other info: I installed latex (on my mac/ppc OSX) from fink: it's
tetex v3.0-1
And finally: the messages about imbalanced q/Q operators may indeed
be associated with the figures. I removed them from the first file
tested above, and I didn't get them.

Cheers,

Andrea

Lack of a DVI file is certainly problem. Does the LaTeX log
indicate any problems generating the DVI? (Probably not if the
same document works with pdflatex, but I've learned not to jump
to conclusions.) Can you view the document with View-DVI or
export it to DVI successfully?

It seems the problem is in my source file, or possibly with the
latex class file that I use. In the end I get several time the
following message in the console.log (I am on a mac ppc):

Warning: File has imbalanced q/Q operators (too many q's)

This file had errors that were repaired or ignored.
    The file was produced by:
     iText by lowagie.com (r0.92)
Please notify the author of the software that produced this
file that it does not conform to Adobe's published PDF
    specification.
Does your source file contain any images, either imported graphics
or via the picture environment? I would be inclined to suspect
them first. Some trial and error deletions should lead you to the
culprit.

dvi and dvips pbs with lyx1.4.3 on mac ppc

2006-10-27 Thread Andrea Moneti
I have two peculiar problems with exporting a document, which may be
related:

1. when exporting to (or viewing) ps2pdf I get
An error occurred whislt running dvips -t a4 -o 'name.ps' 'na
(where the input filename is incomplete, but I don't think that's the
problem) and to pdf output is produced.
I note that upon checking in /tmp/lyx_tmpdir.../lyx_tmpbuf.../ I find
no dvi file there.

2. when exporting to dvi, I get in my working dir a temporary eps
file corresponding to a figure in the document, but no dvi file.
Shouldn't that file go into the lyx tmp dir? the same file is
produced in the lyxx tmpdir when exporting to pdflatex

On the other hand, exporting (and viewing) to pdflatex works ok and
it would be nice if there were a kbd shortcut for it.

Kind regards,

A. Moneti
