ANNOUNCE: LyX 1.3.1 for Win32

2003-03-26 Thread Claus Hentschel
Current release 1.3.1 now is available for Windows, too. Download as usual
from
http://www.fh-hannover.de/mbau/tim/hentschel/lyx/index.htm

This release is based on XForms 1.0 and again compiled using the old gcc
2.95-10 'out-of-the-box'. Building Lyx using the current gcc 3.2 from Cygwin
is not possible at the moment because XForms 1.0 can't be build using that
compiler. Also building a Qt-based version of Lyx 1.3.1 was not possible due
to some strange errors while linking.

ANNOUNCE: Lyx 1.3.0 for Windows

2003-02-13 Thread Claus Hentschel
A new compiler and the new Xforms 1.0 library ... a lot of work the past
week ;-) But now it's done: the new release 1.3.0 using the new
Xforms-1.0-based frontend now is available for Windows, too. Download as
usual from
http://www.fh-hannover.de/mbau/tim/hentschel/lyx/index.htm

Hopefully I can release Lyx using a Qt3-based frontend (like that known from
KDE on Linux) the next days. At the moment there seems to be only one
problem: converting eps images for viewing inside the Lyx window doesn't
work.

Have fun!

{ANNOUNCE] Lyx 1.2.0a for Win32

2002-07-04 Thread Claus Hentschel

I've updated LyX 1.2.0 for Win32 (and named it 1.2.0a):

  - reconfiguration called from inside LyX now works correctly.

  - setting individual margins with A4 papersize now does work.
(they were ignored in 1.2.0 before on all operating systems!)

  - if an image file does exist in different formats located
in the same directory, LyX will not convert the image file.
(this is the same behaviour as in LyX 1.1.6fix4)

  - lyxwin32.exe now does accept filenames as arguments. Therefore
it is possible to dragdrop LyX files on to the desktop icon.

The complete distribution file (ZIP format) as well as all updated packages
(BZ2 format) are available as usual here:

Re: Document Classes Not Found

2002-07-03 Thread Claus Hentschel

I installed Lyx 1.2.0 for Win32 on Cygwin/Xfree86. It can not find the
document classes, all packages in Latex Configuration file are labeled
 Found: ???. Any idea?

You have to reconfigure Lyx. But: Don't call Edit-Reconfigure from inside
LyX. Instead open a bash window and enter
/usr/local/share/lyx/configure

Furthermore remove any LaTeXConfig.lyx file in your $HOME/.lyx directory tree.
LyX will open that file instead of the global one, if present.

Claus

P.S: A new updated LyX 1.2.0a will be available tomorrow(!) where
reconfiguration from inside LyX is working. Furthermore that release will
support drapdrop of .lyx files as well as file association in Explorer.

  Hi,

I'm able to create Lyx documents and save them.
However, whenever I try to view them, the first error dialong that I see is

  "Failed assertion
fds_on_hold

  /cygnus/netrel/src/cygwin-1.3.6-6/winsup/cygwin/dtable.cc"

I'm correctly associated the viewers by putting
"\viewer" config statements. Why I'm seeing these errors? Any idea how to
  solve this problem?

  Thanks,

Re: Running Lyx under Windows 98SE

2002-01-08 Thread Claus Hentschel

The problem is that Lyxwin32.exe does not run, but lyx.exe does - however
I
get the error that it cannot find the x-server. I have set up the paths as
suggested on Claus's website. Any ideas appreciated. (Lyx runs very well
under Linux, but I sometimes have to use it under Windows.)

I have upgraded from Cygwin 1.3.3 to 1.3.6, too and had the same problem.
Some tests show that I have to change the wrapper program lyxwin32 a little
bit, because beginning with cygwin 1.3.6 the bash called will no longer be
invoked as a login shell by default. Passing a nother argument ( --login )
to the bash will do the trick.

Anyway! I have released a new wrapper program on my web page
http://www.fh-hannover.de/mbau/tim/hentschel/lyx/index.htm

Download and install the tarball as described there and Lyx can be started
as before!

Re: lyx unload problem

2001-12-01 Thread Claus Hentschel

I notice in Windows Task Manager on my Win2K machine running the Cygwin
version of lyx that lyx.exe, lyx32.exe, and bash.exe do not unload
themselves from memory when lyx is closed. Sometimes I have to manually
remove 10 or more copies by hand. Is there any cure for this?

I've checked that, too on my system (Win2k). But all processes do terminate.

As lyxwin32.exe is the parent for bash.exe and that for lyx.exe and so on,
maybe there is any child process they are waiting for exiting. (What about
your X-Server? Or any gs.exe process for inline viewing of images? Or any
bibtex process waiting for a key input? )

Fw: Question about using both lyx-win and lyx-linux simultaneously (?)

Convert the windows file into a unix file format. WinDOS' does append
CR/LF
at every line whereas in unix a single LF marks the end of a line. You can
use vi (when viewing the lyx file enter
 :set ff=unix
then save that file) or dos2unix a standard linux command.

Hopefully that will fix the problem.

 Hi,

I have a problem using win and linux version of lyx simultaneously.

At our lab we have both linux (redhat 7.2) and windows nt (cygwin, miktex,
xfree86). I have installed lyx on both OS's successfully (I think). I have
written my report on windows machine without big problems.

But if I copy that report file to the linux machine and open it with
lyx-linux then it doesn't show all the text but it shows space (nothing)
instead. If I select that part with my mouse then it appears, but it
disappears again when I do something else like inserting text.

How can I fix this problem ? When I open this document with a 'normal'
editor like vi, it looks fine. So I'm not sure if it's win-linux
file-porting problem or if it's only the linux-lyx not
installed/configured
 correctly.

 Thank you,

 Chang-Kwon Kang

ps. the reason that I don't keep using the windows machine is because it's
 sometimes occupied by somebody else.

Subject: Question about using both lyx-win and lyx-linux simultaneously
(?)

Re: lyx install on a win 2000 machine

2001-11-22 Thread Claus Hentschel

Although I am not a (Bib)TeX guru here are some questions and hints to check
if your installation of MikTex/LyX is correct:

When I try to export a PDF file I get one error box with a bunch of lines
in
 it say something like

Warning: Citation 'some citation' on page 4 undefined on input

I don't understand why this is happening. I have my bst in the same
director as my lyx file. The dir structures are essentially the same as
on
my Linux system where the lyx files were originall created.

First of all I don't think it's a LyX problem but -- as mentioned in all
responses -- a TeX problem due to any difference between UNIX and Win32/DOS.

So far as I do know ( see above: I am not familiar with BibTex ;-) your
citations are located in a bib file and a bst file is a style file which
tells how to present your references. (Right?!).

So have you tried to use any of the standard bst files (e.g. plain.bst) that
come with MikTeX? If that works with pdftex (and it does on my
Win2000/MikTeX-system) we definetly know that anything with your bst file is
wrong in the MikTeX contents.

On the other hand: Are you sure that your citations are complete? pdftex
told that 'some citations' are undefinied. So the others seems to be
available (if present).

My bib files all are DOS files (CR/LF)! Have you tried to change your bib
(not the bst) file to DOS? (In vi use ':set ff=dos' and then ':wq' to save
your file). Maybe that can fix your problem.

Re: Printing problem.

2001-10-23 Thread Claus Hentschel

I now have everything installed, but obviously not properly. When I click
View/DVI I get the message: Can not view file: Error while execution
 windvi-paper us 'file.dvi'

Windvi (SUPELEC 0.67.2) does open however, and displays the file
beautifully.

As described on the Lyx-Win32 web page, this error is duw to sh.exe which is
called to execute any external program. As described at Cygnus sh.exe
produces an internal error when forking.

In the 'Problems' section you can find a way described how to fix it, i.e.
how to use bash.exe instead of sh.exe.

But when I try to print to paper the type is so big that only the upper
left quarter of it fits on the page.

This may be due to a wrong dpi setting for your printer and screen. Both dpi
settings should be equal so far as i do know.

You do need TWO (2) versions of ghostscript. One (the AFPL version for
Win32) for viewing/printing postscript files in Windows and one (gs4.03) to
view images inside Lyx's X11 window! The AFPL version will not install into
the same directory. Neither ghostscript version does no anything from the
other!

Friends,

I've installed Cygwin/XFree86 and LyX version 1.16fix3 on my Win2k machine.
I also installed gs-4.03.

I'm having printing problems which I think is because I don't have GSView
installed. The following is from the GSView web site:

GSview 4.0 has been released and is available from the directory
ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/ghostgum/
Specific files are:
· · gsv40w32.exe Win32 self extracting archive
· · gsv40os2.zip OS/2 archive
· · gsview-4.0-1.i386.rpm Linux RPM
· · gsview-4.0.i386.tar.gz Linux executable
· · gsv40src.zip Source archive
GSview requires AFPL Ghostscript. You must download AFPL Ghostscript
separately. See Obtaining AFPL Ghostscript 7.00. For Win32, obtain and
install Ghostscript, then run the GSview self extracting archive
gsv40w32.exe. For OS/2, unzip gsv40os2.zip then read the GSview Readme.htm
file.

Note that it says that GSview requires AFPL Ghostscript.

My question: is AFPL Ghostscript going to overwrite gs-4.03? Should I go
ahead and install AFPL Ghostscript 7.00. and gsv40w32.exe?

I need to get to the point of printing out the documentation. Reading it on
screen is hard on the eyes.

Thanks for any help.

After successfully running lyx on Windows98 for over a year, I
am now trying to install lyx on windows 2000. Unfortunately, I cannot
get latex (Miktex) to run from lyx. Latex is never called, and no error
messages appear. Miktex's dvi view, yap is called successfully, although
it is not able to open the garbage dvi file that appears in the lyx temp
directory. The path variables check out, as latex runs from the dos
prompt. I tried reinstalling lyx, but that wasn't successful.
 Any suggestions?

It seems that you have installed Cygwin's tetex package (which is not
configured and therefore not usable). So any DOS program will find latex.exe
from the MikTex package but any Cygwin program (like Lyx) will find
/usr/bin/latex.exe because all internal pathes in Cygwin are in front of
$PATH!

So uninstall the tetex package this way:
1. Open Setup.exe in X:\CygInstall
2. Select 'Install from Local Directory'
3. In the package list press the 'Full/Part' button
4. Locate the tetex package line
5. In the 'New' column select 'Uninstall' using your mouse

Re: Help with Lyx for windows

2001-07-12 Thread Claus Hentschel

 Hi,
My Lyx for windows doesn't work and I'm terrible sad about using Ms word
 instead, I installed lyx 1.1.6 fix2 c,cygwin, miktex and I have two
x-servers:

 Exceed
 Xwin32

When I start Lyx I receive the message: Unable to open X display -
Exiting,
 with all the x-servers above.

 Anyone can help me ??

Just for information what I have been answered to that topic some days ago:

There may be two reasons for that:

1. Edit C:\Cygwin\lyxprofile and set the correct IP address, followed by an
':0' for DISPLAY. If you have an Ethernet card installed on your system
please use it's IP address instead of 127.0.0.1! Most X-Servers
automatically serve the default IP address of your system. 127.0.0.1 (or
localhost, i.e. the corresponding net name) is only valifd if you do have a
DUN on your system.

2. If you have installed a firewall on your system (like me) than you have
to create a new rule so that LyX can connect to the X-server. (Take a look
at your firewall distributor, to learn how this has to be made!)

I use the x-server Exceed from Hummingbird which worked correctly in the
 previous release.

Because it was running I expect that editing lyxprofile could fix the
problem!

LyX and Xfree 4.1 on Win32

2001-07-11 Thread Claus Hentschel

Due to an increasing number of mails concerning problems using LyX together
with XFree 4.1 on Win32 I have checked this configuration myself.

First of all: Using XFree needs much more time to configure (at the moment
hopefully) than just installing and uing Starnet's XWin32 nearly
out-of-the-box. Using the current releases of Xfree on Win2000 SR2 and this
batch file to start LyX:

 cut here
@echo off
SET DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0
SET PATH=.;\cygwin\bin;\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin;\cygwin\usr\local\bin;%PATH%
SET HOME=d:\MyHomeDirectory
SET LANG=DE

rem cleanup after last run
attrib -s \cygwin\tmp\.X11-unix\X0
del \cygwin\tmp\.X11-unix\X0
rmdir \cygwin\tmp\.X11-unix

start XWin -screen 0 1024x768x32 -engine 4
start /B lyx.exe -geometry 800x700+100+5
start /B twm
exit
 cut here

opens LyX inside the Xfree window. As display manager I have choosen the
standard twm which is part of Xfree itself.
Because I didn't spend too much time to test this configuration my keyboard
layout was not correct. But I have read about a location to pick localized
keyboard layout files on Xfree's web site. So hopefully the keyboard could
be configured correctly as well ;-)

Now the PROBLEMS with this configuration (Because I have used Lyx before
there exists a preference file in $HOME/.lyx on my system!!! All who have
installed Lyx/Xfree for the first time: please look below at MAIN PROBLEM):

1) Opening any existing LyX file no text is visible.
Solution: I had to disable 'scalable fonts' in Edit-Preferences inside
LyX to view the text of my documents. After that LyX behaved as if using
Xwin32 instead.

2) If any error box come up Xfree seems to be frozen (the cursor has been
gone).
Waiting 60-90 seconds brings back the cursor and work can be continued.
(That's indeed no solution ;-)

The MAIN PROBLEM arrised when exiting LyX/Xfree and restarting both. Due to
the change I have made in Edit-Preferences LyX has created a file
$HOME/.lyx/preferences.xform which only has COLOR settings as follows:

\gui_background 0 0 0
...
\gui_text 0 0 0

So all colors are set to black (RGB setting 0 0 0)!? This will be default,
too when installing XFree/LyX for the first time! Now nothing can be seen on
the screen but a big black hole as the LyX window.

Obviously LyX isn't able to determine the color values from Xfree. This
seems to be a bug in Xfree or a bug in Xforms (we have to use Xforms 0.89
although Lyx on Unix is based on 0.88).

Replacing that file with the following will make LyX visible and behave like
using Starnet's XWin32:

 cut here
### This file is part of
###
### LyX, The Document Processor
###
### Copyright 1995 Matthias Ettrich
### Copyright 1995-2000 The LyX Team.
###
###

# This file is written by LyX, if you want to make your own
# modifications you should do them from inside LyX and save

\gui_background 161 161 161
\gui_buttonbottom 38 40 38
\gui_buttonleft 186 193 186
\gui_buttonright 38 40 38
\gui_buttontop 186 193 186
\gui_inactive 110 110 110
\gui_push_button 255 255 0
\gui_selected 186 193 186
\gui_text 0 0 0
 cut here

I hope this helps all Xfree users a little bit ;-)

Another PROBLEM concerning a stackdump produced when trying to open LyX in
Xfree:

I haven't tested XFCE (what is that?). Most mailers with problems have
installed that package/tool or any other window manager not part of Xfree
itself. Because twm shows LyX running those errors may be due to any
incompatibility of those tools.

Conclusion: If in doubt try using Starnet's XWin32 instead for a while!
Question: Has anybody out there experiences using LyX on Xfree? If so, I
would appreciate to get some hints and/or a configuration script/procedure.

Choose File-Export-DVI from inside Lyx and a dvi file will be created

How does MikTex work(?):

While installing MikTeX you have to decide where the default tree of all
(Mik)TeX files will be placed.
By default this is 'C:\Program Files\MikTeX\texmf'.

BTW: I do recommend to install MikTeX into C:\MikTeX instead of 'C:\Program
Files\MikTeX' because that path does not include a space character! (Some
programs can't handle a PATH with space characters included.) I will use
this PATH in the following short description.

The second thing you have to decide is where all local files could be found
by MikTeX, i.e. files which are not part of MikTex itself like any specific
style file. By default those files have to be placed in a directory called
'localtexmf' which lives beside the directory 'texmf'.
Therefore you should use 'C:\MikTeX\localtexmf' to install your personally
needed latex files!

If you want to install any latex style file or package, then do the
following:

1. Ensure that the directory tree C:\MikTeX\localtexmf\tex\latex does
exist

2. Download the package from any CTAN server like www.dante.de (If you
append a suffix .zip to the directory name in your browser, than the CTAN
server will send you the complete directory as a zip file ;-)

3. Extract that zip file into C:\MikTeX\tex\latex (a new pacage
directory will be created)

4. Check if any file with suffix '.ins' is available (the install file)
If not, there should be any .sty-file and you can step to (6)

5. Open a command prompt and change into that directory. Call latex
yourPackageName.ins. Watch the screen output. You may have to call this
again until you're told all was done correcrtly. Exit your command shell..

6. Call StartMenu-Programs-Miktex2.1-MikTexOptions and press the
'Refresh Now'-Button to referesh the filename database

7. You need to backup only the localtexmf directory tree!! That's what
you have installed and what will not be available if you have to re-install
MikTex (or your system)

If you do follow these hints you will never touch/change any MikTeX
installed file. Therefore you can remove and re-install or upgrade/update
MikTex at any time. After you've restored your localtexmf tree and do what's
described in (6) MikTeX (and LyX ;-) behaves as before!

How to change a paragraph's background color

2001-06-28 Thread Claus Hentschel

I want to change the background color of some pargraphs (of type 'Quote' but
this should be of no interest IMHO) into light gray. My preamble does
include this:

\usepackage{color}
\definecolor{lightgray}[rgb}0.75,0.75,0.75}

If I do include (in red) \color{lightgray} at the beginning of my Quote
paragraph the text in the complete environment will become lightgray. But I
do want to change the background color, instead! I don't have found any
variable in color.sty like \background or similar to change the background
color in a similar way.

Using a colorbox, i.e. (completely in tred, too)

\colorbox{lightgray}{here is may text which goes over many lines}

will set the background color, BUT the complete text goes into one line
(which of course can't be read off the page).

So is there any latex trick to fix that problem?

Thanks in advance
Claus

Re: unknown textclass "scrbook"

2001-06-28 Thread Claus Hentschel

6. Call StartMenu->Programs->Miktex2.1->MikTexOptions and press the
'Refresh Now'-Button to referesh the filename database

\usepackage{color}
\definecolor{lightgray}[rgb}0.75,0.75,0.75}

\colorbox{lightgray}{here is may text which goes over many lines}

will set the background color, BUT the complete text goes into one line
(which of course can't be read off the page).

So is there any latex trick to fix that problem?

Thanks in advance

How to change the font for 'typesetting' family

2001-06-26 Thread Claus Hentschel

Using the default typesetting font some characters like '' were
interpreted as a single character and will be shown as a black square in any
viewer!

I have succesfully changed the font used in algorithm floats as follows in
the LyX preamble:

\newcommand{\algjlst}[1]{%
\lstinputlisting[stringspaces=false,frame={},tabsize=3,
lineskip=-1pt,extendedchars=true,
basicstyle=\fontfamily{pcr}\fontseries{m}\selectfont\footnotesize,
labelstep=1,labelstyle=\tiny,indent=2em,language=Java,
breaklines]{#1}\vspace{1ex}%
}

With this preamble all characters are presented correctly in any algorithm
environment. But any typesetting characters used in any standard environment
(by just changing the font family inside LyX) still will present those black
squares.

How can I change the default typesetting font to the font used above??

Tnanks in advance

Updated Lyx 1.1.6fix2 for Win32

2001-06-25 Thread Claus Hentschel

There is an updated release for Win32 available (called LyX 1.1.6fix2b) as
usual at
http://www.fh-hannover.de/mbau/tim/hentschel/lyx/index.htm
This update fixes two known problems:
  1. Index now is present, too if you are using MikTeX!
  2. Any change made in the lyx file will now produce an updated PDF file if
you call View-Update-pdflatex

Re: LyX on a CD

2001-06-12 Thread Claus Hentschel

As I am responsible for the Win32-Releases I have followed the whole topic
and this is my comment:

At the moment, because LyX is NOT a Win32 native application you do need any
available X-Server. Xfree IMHO is not ready to be used by all users because
many things have to be configured manually depending on the color depth your
screen is using etc.! As fas as I can see most users prefer to use the
commercial XWin32-server because it's stable and can be installed as a
native Win32-application!

On the other side LyX as an Unix application needs access to Unix tools!
There still are bugs in CygWin and therefore newer releases will become
public! It is necessary to paticipate on these releases inside LyX so the
best way is to use the most current releases of CygWin for LyX! (Should
anyone prepare CD-ROM-Images each two weeks???)

The other problem are tools necessary to run LyX, say Ghostscript (oe for
Win32 to print and one for Cygwin to view images inside LyX). Only the
latest release is free according to the GPL. Same as above: Should anyone
prepare

And don't forget: Who has enough Web-space available to store say 400MB
(Including fpTeX, CygWin, Ghostscript any free XServer, TkPaint, JFig etc.)
as an ISO-image???

Our (Ruurds and me) goal was to separate LyX from all dependending tools so
each package can be installed without (hopefully) any need to instal the
complete stuff again!

So my question (as mentioned on my Lyx/Win32 web-page): What's bad with the
current installation procedure for LyX on Win32? You do have a native
Win32-setup.exe for LyX itself as well as for useful packages (which not all
users are using)! And a complete Setup will take say less than 2 hours if
you do have a 56kbit-Modem!

Can you please send me the .dep-file present in the tmp-directory after
calling latex from inside LyX. Furthermore I do need infos about your latex
distribution (version, release). I have testes BibTeX on my system and
BibTeX is usable with MikTex 1.2/2.0 as well as with fpTex 0.4!

Subject: LyX does not run BibTex

My LyX 1.1.6fix2 for Win32 does not seem to run bibtex at all after
the first latex run, although it runs latex for 3 times.
I had no problems inserting the bibtex references and citations, and
my .bib file is in the same directory as my .lyx file.
When I do a manual latex-bibtex-latex-latex sequence on the exported tex
file, everything is fine, so it doesn't seem to be a tex system problem.

Anyone have an idea what's going on?

 Thanks,

 Milos

P.S. I also run LyX 1.1.6fix2 under Linux where everything works
flawlessly
