Re : MS Word, Lyx, and my resume
Dear Sean LeBlanc, I use LyX to type up my fairly simple resume (I am a medical doctor, and have changed jobs every almost every three to six months for the past six years). However, before using LyX I used LaTeX, so I guess I can hardly call myself a newbie! Having said that, LyX is far easier to use than the word-processors I used pre-mouse/windows/pointers/graphical user interface days. I commonly send PDF files to friends, these files are generated by LyX (and I have also sent music score files generated by LaTeX to friends as well). Most have no trouble reading and printing these files. However, I have found pdflatex operation from within LyX to be unreliable. This might be an error from within my LyX configuration. I have been forced to export 'pdf' first (which generates a postscript file, and then converts that to pdf), and then export 'pdf (pdflatex)'. This is only an issue if you want to create click-on links within your PDF document. Also, I have just received a letter from the editor of a medical magazine regarding receiving submission by PDF. It turns out that they would then have to 'cut and paste' for subsequent inclusion in a Word document. To actually read Word documents, I think you are better of using OpenOffice/StarOffice or WordPerfect rather than use LyX. If all you need to do is import text, LyX is quite capable of the job. How do I add to/change LYXDIR/encodings (/usr/share/lyx/encodings)?
Dear all! When trying to change /usr/share/lyx/languages to recognise Chinese-Big5, I noted that CJK-LyX seems unable to find big5 encoding information. I guess this information is to be found in /usr/share/lyx/encodings. How do I go about modifying /usr/share/lyx/encodings so that big5 (or GB) is available? How to show CJK-LyX that i18n1 encoding is being used?
Hello all! Further attempts at getting CJK-LyX have resulted in more perplexing questions... How does CJK-LyX know whether a particular passage is using i18n1 Gothic encoding? (or i18n2 Normal encoding, for that matter). Should it be done with the Layout-Character-Language menu setting? /usr/share/lyx/languages (LyXDir/languages) does not have a description for Chinese, Japanese or Korean. I tried to add the following line myself... chinese-bg5 chinese "Chinese Big5" big5-0 zh_TW.Big5 "" ...which allows me to mark a section of text as being `chinese-big5', but unfortunately Chinese characters are still not being displayed. Anyone can help me out here? Cheerio, David. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Ivanhoe, 3079, Australia. http://www.users.bigpond.com/vkelim/ - GnuPG and ICQ available Amiga / Linux APUS / Linux Mandrake
CJK-LyX, displaying Chinese fonts
Hello all! After much frustration, I have finally managed to install CJK 4.4.0 onto my Linux Mandrake 8.0 (Pentium) distribution. XEmacs-Mule is able to display Big5 fonts correctly. So the next logical step is to install CJK-LyX... CJK-LyX seems to install well, although it is strange that tetex-lyx thinks lyx should have been installed beforehand, instead of CJK-LyX. The problem is the screen fonts. These are the settings I try... \screen_font_i18n1_encoding "big5-0" \screen_font_i18n1_normal "-arphic technology-ar pl mingti2l" \screen_font_i18n1_gothic "-arphic technology-ar pl mingti2l" \screen_font_i18n2_encoding "big5-0" \screen_font_i18n2_normal "-arphic technology-ar pl kaitim" \screen_font_i18n2_gothic "-arphic technology-ar pl kaitim" (I tried to set these via the Preferences, but for some reason I am unable to save these settings in such a way that they appear next time I load CJK-LyX. The full font name is "arphic technology co.-ar pl kaitim big5-*"). I need to set -arphic technology- rather than -arphic-, as -arphic- describes fonts with GB encoding. Anyway, trying to insert a text file in Big5 encoding only results in some garbled Roman alphanumerics appearing on screen. The terminal which I ran CJK-LyX from reports...
