pretty-printing C/C++ code
Hi, is there an easy way to pretty-print source code (C/C++ or other) using lyx (or latex) ? I mean different font for keywords, comments, preprocessor commands, etc. Thanks in advance, Emanuele

A friend of mine told me that the "compose" key of his keyborad doesn't work under LyX but works under Emacs. He's using Xfree4. Ant hint to let it work? Thanks, Emanuele

small bug?
I'compiled lyx-1.1.6fix1, everything works well, but at the 1st run LyX tried to execute share/lyx/configure without success. I noticed that shell script has not executable permission, so I changed permission and now it works. I've compiled and installed with user priveileges (I've not root login :-( ). Is this the reason of the (small) bug? Thanks to all LyX developers. Emanuele

Re: About hyphenation
I think it's the usual problem... :-) The problem is LaTeX, not LyX. Follow these steps: Become root and run 'texconfig' Go in the hyphenation-latex menu Texconfig let you edit a configuration file : uncomment the line about spanish language (I don't remember now, it's something like removing '#', but it's quite clear anyway). Exit and save from the editor and from texconfig. After a long (automatic) rebuilding you'll have full support of your language. Start LyX (maybe it's better to reconfigure?). That's all. Hope this helps. Emanuele P.S.: WARNING: if you don't know how to use VI you'll find some problem, because usually it's the standard editor for texconfig. Read something about VI first. Again, don't try to modify the configuration file outside texconfig evironnement: latex won't know the changes... if you don't have a long rebuilding at the end of texconfig, you have canged nothing. P.S.II : If my answer is correct (I hope), maybe it's better to put it in the FAQ... I found this question MANY MANY times. ;-)

Available document classes
Hi, many people in my Linux User Group ask me about other document classes than those present in 1.1.5fix2 version of LyX. Is there a list (or, can we set up one now) of all document class available? I'm looking through the user-list mail archive to get some links. Thanks to everybody, Emanuele

AMS-BOOK intenationalization HOWTO
I'm going to write a mini-howto about internationalization of AMS-Book document class in LyX. Herbert Voss solved all my problems about it (many thanks to him), so I'm going to collect all his work (and a bit of mine) to let other people use AMS-Book document class in their language. As soon as possible I'll post everything or an URL. If someone has particular requests or suggestions, please e-mail me. Emanuele P.S.: I don't know how to do a proper internationalization, so I'll write a short paper and add some files. If some know the right way to do...

AMS not translated (LAST QUESTIONS!)
I'm back from holidays .. :-( ;-) First of all I'd like to thanks Herbert Voss for his great help to my problem. On Thu Aug 10 21:11:01 2000 Herbert Voss explain (answering a question of mine) how to translate "AMS Book" words like : "Theorem", "Corollary" etc... in other languages (there are a lot of entries in that document class); See his previous message to have a full description of the problem. There are some problems and something doesn't work, so to solve my last problems (and help other people with the same problem) here are notes and questions: He wrotes: 1. you can patch the lyx-layout-file amsmath.inc, changing the names for the different theorems is possible, I don't know how to do... but anyway there is a second chance, 2. in line 78 of ~/.lyx/layouts/amsbook.layout begins a preamble. insert as line 79, before the other theorem-commands OK, this solution works 90% : *) I changed amsbook.layout as suggested (DON'T insert any other line in that file, nor "#" comments, otherwise LyX will not compile); then I took ntheorem.sty from Herbert's e-mail and put on suggetsted directory but this DOESN'T WORK. I hadn't any /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/ntheorem/ directory (nor ~/.TeX) so I created them and I tried, but LaTeX didn't see that file. My solution was to put that file in the current working directory, where there are my LyX files. This works. Then I put this LateX commands in my AMS-book-LyX file : \renewtheorem{thm}{Teorema}[section] \renewtheorem{cor}{Corollario}[section] to rename "Theorem" and "Corollary". This works, but generate my BIG problem: LaTeX ask to "redefine" also "proof" with \renewtheorem ; I added (don't laugh...) : \renewtheorem{proof}{Dimostrazione}[section] but LaTeX starts to numerate Proofs! No, this is not good. so I tried: \renewtheorem{proof}{Dimostrazione} Numbers again (other kind of numeration)... :-(( How can I avoid proof numbering? Thanks for every answer. P.S.: Now I think to sum up all Herbert works (and my notes) to make a AMS-Book-translation-HOWTO... does someone need it? Emanuele

Thesis: All Done!!!
Yesterday I discuss my degree thesis in physics: "local electrical characterization of human atrium during fibrillation" I'd like to thanks all the LyX community for every suggestions given to me during last six months. My work was possible only with your suggestions. I'd like to thank in particular Jurgen Vigna, Jean-Marc Lasgouttes and Herbert Voss: they followed (and solved!) carefully and quickly all my questions, on the list and personally. The mail-help given by this community is wonderful and better than every kind off "commercial" assistance: this makes LyX better than it is (and it's wonderful just alone). From now on I hope to help other new LyX user to increase the LyX community. I teach LyX basics to other 4 people during this months, and I think that in this way we can reach 1 billion of LyX users in less then 4 years... :- You can download (only for fun, *publications in progress*) my thesis at http://www.science.unitn.it/~olivetti/tesi/cover.ps.gz (the cover) http://www.science.unitn.it/~olivetti/tesi/tutto.ps.gz (the work, 118pag.) It's in italian (I'm sorry...) and you can find Credits at the end under chapter "Ringraziamenti" (that's credits in italian papers). See you soon, Emanuele

Landscape Postscript Problems
I found that Aladdin GSView for Windows has not the problem of "text cut on the right", belonging (probably) to wrong bounding box. Also ghostview 1.5 on UX-HP works well... (old ghostscript 2.6.1 !) I think that only GV by Johannes Plass has the bug. So I'll use GSView for Winz :- for my presentation... Stay Tuned, Emanuele

Presentation with FoilTeX
As you probably know I'm at the end of my thesis...8-} . Now I'm trying to set up the presentation; obviously I want to use LyX. They say to me to use my notebook instead of that old-fashioned slides... I'll prepare both of them, because I like slides. No way to use PowerPoint, as they suggested. I don't want to mix heaven and hell! Here is the problem: I'll use ghostview (gv by Johannes Plass) on my notebook with a projector, to show my LyX-slides; since the display is larger than tall, I'll use landscape A4 paper as default. But if I set landscape paper and RotateFoilHead environnement, things go wrong and I get a portrait slide shown horizontally. Using only Landscape paper or only RotateFoilHead goes wrong. If I set "landscape", in the Extra Option of the document layout, I get the right thing, but text is truncated on the right (using gv). Is it a problem of LyX or gv? Which viewer shall I use to make the presentation? Is gv good for this? If I can't find a solution I'll use portrait slides :-( Thanks a lot Emanuele
landscape slides in postscript
Hi, I tried to view landscape LyX slides (FoilTeX) with ghostview, but the right part of the slide doesn't appear: the text is cut. I haven't this problem with dvips, only with gv (by Johannes Plass). Shall I use another viewer? Is it a problem with postscript? I have to do a presentation (of my thesis, as usual) and I want to use my notebook and a postscript viewer. Wich viewer is better? Aladdin? Johannes Plass? (default on RedHat) GNU ghostview? Thanks a lot Emanuele P.S.: As is said in Extended.lyx, I set "landscape" in extra option of Layout-Document menu, and nothing else. Is it correct?

I'm printing a two-side report (my thesis) written with LyX: How can I make LyX start a new chapter on the right side (i.e. on a page with odd number)? Otherwise, how can I add a white page before a chapter? Thanks in advance Emanuele

Long table from file
Hi, This is my problem. I have to include a list of results in my thesis, i.e. a table with 120 lines and 5 columns, taken from a file (results.txt, an ASCII file, 120 lines and 5 columns obviously :-) ). Is there a way to insert files in LyX/LaTeX "Tables"? Is it automatically split over pages? How can I do ? Thanks a lot Emanuele

fig. From Excel to LyX : It works!!
If you need (I hope not) to use Excel figures in LyX document and you're on troubles... try this (or change spreadsheet, it's better ;-) ). During last weekend I need to use *.cmx (Corel) images in my LyX document. Working on it (many attempts troubles) I found how to import figures from Excel to LyX (EPS format). If you try directly to save Excel figure on disk, you get only BITMAP version, but we (LyX users) don't like bitmap graphics if possible. Then do this: 1) Download CorelXARA 2.0 from www.download.com : it's a DEMO version but it works for this job. Install it. 2) Make your graph on Excel and copy it to the clipboard 3) Paste in CorelXARA 4) Export as *.eps (CorelXARA) .There are many eps file format here, but only this one works. I work out every possibility. 5) Load the file in Ghostview ON WINDOWS (if you don't have it, download from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/index.html , it's the Aladdin one, maybe it also works with GNU one, I don't know...) 6) Extract as *.eps file (Extract is under File) 7) NOW this last eps file works under LyX. 8) If you don't need any other coversion, uninstall CorelXARA. Can someone explain me the reason of all this chaos in eps file? Is there any other way to do this conversion? See You Emanuele

Troubles installing LyX on Linux
I'm trying to install LyX (1.0.3) on my Linux laptop... It is not so easy! First of all I use RedHat 6.0 distribution. When I did ./configure it prompts me these mistakes : Can't find libXforms etc... Can't find xpm.h etc... Can't find libforms or libxforms etc... Can't find forms.h etc... So, no way for compiling! I read the INSTALL file and 'Problems" paragraph, but I couldn't solve my problem. I didn't find those files in my directoris. Shall I install some other RPM ? Someone can help me ? I need VERY EASY instructions, because I'm a Linux beginner (and LyX pre-beginner ;-D ). Thanks in advance Emanuele
