Dissertation Finished! Thank you LyXers!
Hi LyXers! As the production monkey for my wife's dissertation (374 pages, 75 figures, 10 tables), I wanted to give a big THANK YOU to the LyX community, and especially to everyone who helped answer my questions over the last month! (We've also placed a thank you in the Acknowledgments section.) The document is absolutely beautiful. It is typeset using the ClassicThesis style. I'll post a link to the dissertation after it is reviewed by her committee. I also have a number of tips/tricks I accumulated along the way. If interested I'd be happy to combine these and post them here. Maybe they might be useful to others. Cheers! ~greg

Merge Adjacent Citations?
Hi LyXers, Is there any way to merge adjacent citations? I'm using BibDesk to search citations and then Send to Lyx script, works very nice. However the citations are sent to LyX one at a time (unless I ctrl^select, but sometimes you slip). Is there any way to merge adjacent citations to make multi-citations? Like (Greg 2002, Greg et. al. 2010, etc.)? Thanks much! ~g

Thanks again for your help! Uninstalling and reinstalling LyX resolved the problem. The Outline window is now functioning like a (mostly) normal window now. Cheers! ~g

LyX2.0RC2--Outline window stuck under menubar
Hi, The Outline window is stuck under my menubar. Quitting / Restarting LyX does not fix. The Outline opens stuck again. Any ideas. Thanks! ~greg (Mac 10.5, LyX2.0RC2)

LyX2.0RC2--Error when including same file twice
Hi LyXers, When I try to include the same file twice, LyX gives this error: Could not load included file '~/filename.lyx' Please, check whether it actually exists. (Note: This error seems to have been introduced between RC1 and RC2 (LyX 2.0). I did not have this error with any of the betas or RC1.) To reproduce: 1. Layout ANY (I reproduced with both Article and Report KOMA Script) 2. Make new file and test file to be included. 3. Insert File Child test_include.lyx 4. Repeat step 3. 5. Compile PDF; get error. 6. Note that this error does not seem to stop the compile. (Why would I want to include the same file twice? Because I had made a blank flyleaf for the front and back of the document---the blank page had a simple white graphic. However, I was able to reproduce the error using any file included twice. Cheers! ~greg (Mac 10.5, LyX 2.0RC2, TexLive2010)

Cursor Color LyX 2.0RC2
Hey LyXers, First, I love that we can now increase the cursor size! Thanks! Second, did we lose the ability to change the cursor color? I see that cursor is absent from the color preferences. Any way to change the cursor color like before? Cheers! ~g

Cursor Size in RC1?
Hi LyXers, There was some discussion of making it possible to change cursor size in LyX2.0RC1 (especially needed for Mac). Was this done? And if so, how do I do it? I have 300+ pages to edit and the one pixel cursor is making me bug- eyed ;-). Thanks! ~greg
Currvita package--rename bibliography title
Hi LyXers, Hopefully this post saves you some time... If you are using the CV package currvita and wish to rename or suppress the bibliography title, you must use this command in the preamble: \renewcommand{\cvbibname}{NewName} Currvita uses cvbibname instead of refname. So if you are trying to change the title using refname, you are in for a long evening. Cheers! ~g

Master / Child---What exactly is inherited?
Hi, 1. What exactly is inherited by Child docs? For instance, my Master doc is using class Report (KOMA Script) and has the text layout set to BigSkip and line spacing to Double. But, when I open the child document in the main window (usually via the TOC) the text layout of the Child is all set to default (indent paragraph, single space). I know that the layout class of the child must match the Master but what are the other settings, other than Preamble, which are inherited? (Note: that my Master document compiles properly with BigSkip and Double spacing---the problem is that the Child opens in the main window without any obvious inheriting of settings.) 2. What properties, other than layout class, need to be set in the Child document since they are not inherited? 3. Any other best practices advice for using Master / Child would be appreciated. Thank you very much, ~greg (Mac 10.5, LyX 2.0RC1, TexLive 2010)

Disable HyperRef when Exporting to OpenDocument
Hi All, Hopefully this post saves somebody some hassle. If you are having problems exporting LyX to OpenDocument, try disabling HyperRef. I was having significant export problems until I discovered the HyperRef trick. Good luck, ~greg (Mac 10.5, LyX 2.0RC1, TexLive2010)

Screen Paragraph Spacing and Fonts
Hi All, Is there any way to add some extra space between paragraphs on the screen? Personally, I find the default screen spacing a little crowded for my screen editing preference. Also, what do you believe are the best fonts for the screen? I've changed the default Times to Georgia (a huge improvement) and the default Arial to Verdana (also an improvement). But I figure someone has advice for making the screen more readable. Thanks, ~greg

Adjust Margins on Tufte-Book
Hi All, I need to change the default margins on Tufte-book. I was able to change the left margin by changing the file tufte-common.def (in which I changed the left=1in to left=1.5in ): % Set page layout geometry \RequirePackage [letterpaper ,left = 1in ,top = 1in ,headsep = 2 \baselineskip ,textwidth = 26pc ,marginparsep =2pc,marginparwidth=12pc,textheight=44\baselineskip,headheight= \baselineskip]{geometry} However this offset the whole text body to the right. Is there a way to set the right margin to 1in and have the sidenotes adjust? In other words, I need left 1.5in and right 1in and have the sidenotes adjust approriately. Thanks very much, Greg Mac 10.5. Lyx 2.0b4. TexLive

How to Format Commentary (float? minibox? table?)
Hi Lyx Gurus, For my dissertation I need to place comments adjacent to a chronological narrative. I envision doing this with a Left column containing the chronological narrative, and a Right column with the comments. The comments would be inserted at specific places into the narrative, but would need to act like pull outs (or pull quotes) when the document is output. I've attached a PDF of what I would like to do. Any ideas of how I can achieve this? Thanks very much! ~greg comment.pdf Description: Adobe PDF document

Change Chapter Headings
Hi All, I'm using document class Report and want to change the Chapter headings. The default is to have Chapter 1 - Name of Chapter. I just want 1.0 Name of Chapter or something like that. How can I do this? BTW - I'm using the Report class for a proposal, perhaps there is a better document class that is more suitable? Thanks, Greg

Images - Multiple Image Scaling Changes and Screen/Print settings
Hi All, I have two questions relating to images/figures: 1. Is there a way to change the settings for multiple images contained in figure-floats? For instance if I place a number of figures on my page, each with an image, is there a way to select all the images to change their scaling at the same time? If the images are inside floats, it appears I can grab all the floats, but I can't grab/edit all the images. BTW - I would do this if I was trying to get a certain number of images per page and I had to change the scaling to achieve that. 2. Is there any way to link the output scaling with the screen scaling? It would be nice if I set the output at say 25% to have the screen scaling automatically reflect that change, rather than having to change the scaling twice for each image. I couldn't find a preference, but thought maybe there was some deeper way of doing this. Thanks! greg
