Help on 1.5.6 - 1.6.4 windows upgrade please

I have an old working version of Lyx 1.5.6 
(LyX-156-3-25-AltInstaller-Complete.exe) on windows XP. I now want to upgrade 
to the latest version. Which release do you recommend, without having to 
compile lyx manully.

Brand new install on xp-pro fails to contact miktex

Version LyX-1.5.6-1-Installer.exe 
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.5.6/LyX-1.5.6-1-Installer.exe on 
windows xp-pro goes through install routine and fails to connect.


1- Install routine'

2- Download MikTex = Checked on install screen
3- select language = english
4- checked = english
5- destination folder C:\Program Files\LyX15
6- allowed install to run
7- Downloading MikTex failed. Would you like to try again? )redirection 302)
repeated attempts return same message.

8 Continue with install, but unable to create outputs.

Please advise. Many thanks
