Unfortunately this is not help since I have an abstract part that I do not

Hi Ioannis,

If it were me, assuming I wanted the Acknowledgements on their own
page, what I would do is create an environment (LaTeX-speak for
paragraph styles) for the Acknowledgement's title, and one for its body
text, and use those. No muss, no fuss, no hassle.

The way I make environments is by using a layout file. If you don't
already have one, here are some details:

http://www.troubleshooters.com/lpm/200210/200210.htm#_MakingYourOwnLayout

Since that article was written, LyX has become much more accommodating
to having your layout file in the same directory as your document, so
these days, that's what I always do. No symlink required.

Is it possible in LyX to automatically manage acknowledgements and
grant disclosures, when some of them are tied to particular citations?

The answer is that it should be possible to do this in LaTeX---you can
do anything in LaTeX---but it is not trivial.

Most bibliographical citations print a note field. One could put into
the note field a LaTeX command that would add an acknowledgement to some
existing list of acknowledgements. So you'd have something like:

\def\addtoacks#1{
\@ifundefined\myacks
{\def\myacks{#1}}
{\def\myacks{\myacks; #1}}}
to set it up, and then in each thing you want to acknowledge, in the
BibTeX note field:

\addtoacks{\cite{mykey}, from Jane Doe}
or whatever. The nice thing about this is that the acknowledgements will
appear in order, though you won't get the collapse [#, #]. The bad thing
is that this version won't work unless the acknowledgement is printed
after the bibliography, which may not be what you want. In that case,
you could try printing the acknoweldgement to a file and then loading
that file on a later run of LaTeX, but that gets more complicated.

I had to do this once when I was in a hurry. So I made a quick fix, there
might be better methods, however it worked for me...

Copy your two abstract together and set the language to danish. Then without
using a linebreak put something like this in an ert box between the two
abstracts:

\newline
 %(\newpage might work as well, depend on your style, I guess)
\begin{center}
 %(or flushleft/right, depending on your style)
\large\bf{Abstract}
%(change size and bold to mach the style)
\end{center}
\hfill

 What about roman numbers before the TOC, is that possible in Lyx, or do I
 need to use Latex directives?

This depends on your style and you should look in the documentation for the
style to see if the behaviour can be changed. Or you could do somthing like
this in ert when you want to change pagenumberstyle:

\clearpage
\pagenumbering{roman} %or arabic
\setcounter{page}{3} % the pagenumber is reset and you have to correct it

It might give some surprising results though :).

 And. what about the preface and
 acknowledgements? I haven't found any way of selecting this in any of
 document classes, so how do I get around this?

Again it depends on your style, if you use report(koma-skript) you have many
different choices that you could use such as dedications, and upper and lower
title backs etc.

acknowledgement page at the beginning right after the title page and an
abstract page
at the very end.

I am using the report (textcomp) class to write it, and can not figure
out how to do this.
Both the ack and the abstract just need to be plain text types of pages
(nothing fancy),
less the title words Acknowledgement and Abstract in large type bold
(like the size of a
chapter heading for instace).

Anyone have any ideas or prebuilt files for this?? I would normally just
do it in
a seperate document, but according to the graduate school those pages
must be numbered
also.

Thanks.

acknowledgements environment

2001-05-30 Thread Alejandro Fernandez

Hi,

I'm using lyx to write a project report, using the report style. I'd
like to add an acknowledgements page, after the title page, but I don't
have much time to spend on it. I've tried adding this stile:

Style Acknowledgement
  MarginStatic
  LatexType Environment
  LatexName ack
  NextNoIndent  1
  LeftMarginMMM
  RightMargin   MMM
  ParIndent MM
  ItemSep   0
  TopSep0.7
  BottomSep 0.7
  ParSep0
  Align Block
  AlignPossible Block
  LabelType Centered_Top_Environment
  LabelString   Acknowledgements
  LabelBottomSep0.5

  # standard font definition
  Font
SizeSmall
  EndFont

  # label font definition
  LabelFont
Series  Bold
SizeLarge
  EndFont
End

I added it to lyx/layouts/report.layout

I have no idea what I'm doing, of course, except that I just copied the
abstract style, since that's mostly what I need, but when I try to
print, it gives the error:

environment ack undefined

Where do I define it? Can I just leave the environment as abstract Or
am I doing this wrong?

Thanks,

Ale

You must define the ack environment. You should have something like this:

Style Acknowledgement
  CopyStyle abstract
  LatexType Environment
  LatexName ack

  # define the ack environment
  Preamble
  % Define completely your environment here
  \newenvironment{ack}{ ... }{ ... }
  % Or include the package that defines this environment
  % \usepackage{..}
  EndPreamble
End

Hi,

Thanks, but I don't understand where to find a package that defines
this, or how to define it with \newenvironment. Could you tell me where
these packages are usually kept, or what extension or file name they
might have?

I've tried looking for occurrences of Preamble, \newenvironment and
usepackage in the lyx layouts directory, but this has not led me
anywhere useful... There is a file named svjour.inc, which contains
various acknowledgements style definitions, but no package seems to be
defined there either.
