Sorry, slightly of topic, but…

I don't want to upgrade to Mavericks because of the crippled Sync-Services.
With Mavericks one cannot sync it's iPhone via USB-Port anymore.
You have to use your iCloud account at Apple to sync your contacts and
calendars.
I didn't find any alternate solution.

I don't own any iOS devices, so syncing is not important to me. It also
means, improvements (which is a matter of opinion, of course) that helps
OS and iOS communicate is unimportant to me. The two Mavericks features
that interest me, the tabbed Finder and Tags, I already have in Mountain
Lion via 3rd party software. And, I've read elsewhere of
software/Mavericks issues.

So, I'm in no hurry to update, if at all.

All of you Apple users, you have no problem with this privacy attack?

Privacy issues are the reason I avoid any cloud involvement other than
web browsing as much as I can. That's limited to shopping, online
banking, and a Dropbox account where nothing personal is stored, no
backups, nada. I use it as a pseudo FTP site for large files rather
than try to email or "sumpin'".My computers are networked, so I
don't need it for transferring data between systems.

2013-10-31 Thread Murat Yildizoglu
OK, I have missed indeed this point, since I have adopted iCloud for
limited synching for some time ago (I do not sync my mail, and my calendars
are on GCalender, so I do not use iCloud either). I understand that this is
1/ inflexible; 2/not very respective of privacy. I must admit that the
comfort of invisibly synching all my necessary information between all my
iOS and OSX devices reduced my vigilance on this aspect of this mechanism.

Backup and sync (contacts, calendars) are two different things.

Apple has removed the sync services framework from OS X Mavericks.

Look here and scroll down to the 'What you can sync' section:

A lot of people are unhappy with this:

I do not understand your remark. I am, at this moment backing up my iPhone
(iOS7) on my MacBook (Mavericks) without any problem. In my case, I have
always unchecked the backup through iCloud and checked the backup "on this
computer". I also see that synchronization is available as a button and it
will probably become active when the backup will finish.

Anyone used Lyx on Mac OS X Mavericks

2013-10-30 Thread Robert Betz

I have recently installed Mavericks. Lyx works, but have found the the '\'
character does not print on the screen. Instead one gets a " (inverted comma)
character. This occurs in general text, and the ERTs and in Maths equations.

Has anyone come across this, and do they know of a fix.

Thanks.

Bob
