Export only the TOC as a pdf

2009-02-15 Thread Nikos Alexandris
Hi list!

Did you ever want to export as a pdf the TOC of your 200+ pages
document, just to show to a friend what is all about it, that you
spent your hours behind the monitor?

No other way than exporting the whole document and grabbing the pages of
interest?

Regards, Nikos

Not that I know. But exporting a 200+ pages file to PDF and then taking the first pages of it and
save it as a separate PDF file takes here only 2 minutes.

Yes, it sure takes some minutes... Open the document (~14MB), export
(200+ pages with lots of images), open with a pdf editor... (like
PDFEdit # the only one I know under linux that works), identify the TOC
pages, learn how to to isolate pages (hmmm... I am still trying to
figure out if there is save selected pages in PDFEdit... or do I have
to erase all other pages!!?), save them... and ok.

What about an option in LyX under File Export TOC (pdf) ?

Hmm, this does not take more than 5 seconds even with the biggest PDF I found
on my 3 year old PC.

But you have to do this only once. The next time you know how to do this. There are btw. other PDF
viewers available on Linux, for example all Ghostscript-based viewers, and the one that comes with
KDE and that of Gnome.

Would sure be useful, but this requires some nasty LaTeX tricks. The TOC is created in the second
LaTeX run, because at first the whole document must be processed to see what section headings are
used. SO you need to compile always the whole document and in a second step extract the TOC pages.
And this is what you do when you use a PDF viewer for that.

Let me second this recommendation. This tool is exceptionally useful for
