  I see one possibility:

\begin{center}
\includegraphics[scale=0.1]{images/ReferenceSinteredModel}
\par\end{center}

  Aligning to the center might override the minipage or scaling to 45% of
text width.

You may have noted that , horizontal fill is not visible in the source. Do
they show up ? I am inserting the horizontal fill between the two
minipages, but the insertion is not showing up in the source.

  No idea, because I've not had an issue with placing two figures
side-by-side in a single float.

Thanks for the hint. I tried again with your suggestion that I might have
missed initially. Unfortunately, I am getting the same result - one image
overlapping the other image. So I thought of pasting the source below for
you so that it becomes more transparent of what I might have missed in the
process.

/

% Preview source code for paragraph 17

\begin{figure}

\begin{minipage}[t]{0.45\textwidth}%

\begin{center}

\includegraphics[scale=0.1]{images/ReferenceSinteredModel}

\protect\caption{Reference Sintered Model}

\includegraphics[scale=0.1]{images/OriginalSinteredModel}

\par\end{center}

\protect\caption{Original Sintered Model}

%

\end{minipage}

\end{figure}

You may have noted that , horizontal fill is not visible in the source. Do
they show up ? I am inserting the horizontal fill between the two
minipages, but the insertion is not showing up in the source.

Waiting for more feed-back over this issue.

I'm confused. I was just noting a related post. I think the
stackexchange post was made after Sajjad's email and your response, so
you couldn't have seen it anyway. I don't know if that was a
cross-post or not (meaning it is the same person who made both posts).
It doesn't really matter. Whenever I see two open questions that are
related, I try to "link" them so that (1) people do not waste time
trying to solve a problem that is already solved (for a fun and
informative read, see
http://www.latex-community.org/home/latex-community/94-etiquette/454-crossposts);
and (2) if someone google's and comes across this question, they can
follow the link and find a related topic of interest that might help
in solving their problem.

Did I misunderstand something? I am often bad with communication
through text, so I'm always looking for ways to improve. Suggestions
are welcome. Looking back, I think one thing I could have done better
is reply to Sajjad's email instead of your email. When I am not
quoting something and I just want to reply, I have the habit of just
replying to the last email in the thread. By I suppose that has the
side effect that you think I am responding directly to you. Would it
have been better if I responded to Sajjad instead of the last email in
the thread (which happened to be yours)? Also, I could have removed
you from GMail's "reply all" default, which is a lazy way of respond
to the list. Would that have avoided confusion?

Do as in the example, and the figures _will_ be side by side.
The example uses two figures, each in separate minipages.
Latex tries to put stuff on the same line until the line gets full. If
the two
minipages is 50% (or less) of column width, then they will fit on a
single line
and you get two figures on the same line.

The recipe aligns one figure with the left margin and one with the right
margin,
because there is a hfill between them. (hfills take up all excess space
on a line).

If you don't want your figures right at the edges, try putting a hfill
before the
first one and a hfill after the last one too. Note that this only
shuffles the minipages
around. The figure inside a minipage may be smaller than the minipage, and
possibly badly aligned inside it. Put the cursor inside the minipage,
in the same paragraph as the figure. Then select layout-paragraph and
use centered, right-justified
or left-justified. (The setting applies only to that one paragraph
inside the minipage,
nothing happens to the minipage itself.) You can also use hfills inside
the minipage
if you find that easier.

If this don't help, please ask a more detailed question. Tell what you
try to do,
how it goes wrong, and provide a minimal example file.

Thanks Herbert.. will try this out soon..

On the other hand you can put the image into a box
and then set the minipage exactly to the width of
this box (image).
To make life harder, my first image's height width so I've set the
scaling using the height and asked for the aspect ratio to be
maintained. The second image's width height so it's the other way

Or - trial and error ...

Re: Problem with figures side by side

Thank you Herbert and Paul for the file.. I used the last option
with the minipages and captions within the minipages so that the two
captions will show up beside one another. Also aligned the minipage
to the bottom so the captions are on the same line. Now, only one
problem - the block of figures isn't centered with respect to the
paragraph (text) beneath it.. I tried deleting the \hfill before the
first figure and that made it a little better but it's still not
centered. is this cos the widths of the two figures are different?
In Herbert's third example, the widths of the figures are set to 80%
and 30% of col. and the corresponding minipages are set to 60% and
35% of line respectively. So my question - is trial and error the
only way to have these unequal-width figures side by side so that
the entire block is centered?

Thanks,
nirmal

Then do not use minipages, use package varwidth. The only,
but important problem is, that LyX doesn't support this
package. - ERT
On the other hand you can put the image into a box
and then set the minipage exactly to the width of
this box (image).
Or - trial and error ...

Thanks Herbert... I think the one I was looking for was named
FigSideBySide.lyx but assuming that it uses the same minipages-based
solution as MultiImages.lyx, I am unable to vertically align the
captions of the two figures that are side-by-side... I have two
figures that do not have the same height/width but I'd like to have
the captions on the same line, i.e. the figures will have a constant
base... any way to do this? (I also have labels for the figures
within a figure float)

Thanks,
nirmal

2004-01-19 Thread Nirmal Govind

The only,
but important problem is, that LyX doesn't support this
package. -> ERT
On the other hand you can put the image into a box
and then set the minipage exactly to the width of
this box (image).
Or -> trial and error ...

Dear All

I am trying to insert two figures side by side in a document and I have
followed the instructions indicated on:

Unfortunately, the figures, although appearing side by side, are not

placed bellow the other one. Is it possible to eliminate that vertical
misalignment? Could somebody here please help me?

Thank you a lot in advance!

I generally reduce their width to something less than 50% of the whole

individual subfigures their own subcaptions and reference them in the main
caption, then.

place it in a table of 1 row and two column inside the figure float.
But it's better to use minipage command, try the following...

[inside the float, all in red command (tex style)]

\begin{tabular}{cc}
\begin{minipage}{9.5cm}

 insert the first figure

You just need to put them on the same paragraph and have them small enough
for the second not to go to the next line, you can also put an extensible
space (insert-special caracter) between them to have one on the left and one
on the right.
See sample (won't compile as there are no figures, but show the behavior).

place it in a table of 1 row and two column inside the figure float.
But it's better to use minipage command, try the following...

[inside the float, all in red command (tex style)]

\begin{tabular}{cc}
\begin{minipage}{9.5cm}

 insert the first figure

\end{minipage}
&
\begin{minipage}{5cm}

 insert the second figure

\end{minipage}
\end{tabular}

Figure: title bla.. bla...

I hope you do not find error.

You just need to put them on the same paragraph and have them small enough
for the second not to go to the next line, you can also put an extensible
space (insert->special caracter) between them to have one on the left and one
on the right.
See sample (won't compile as there are no figures, but show the behavior).

Figures side by side

2000-10-27 Thread Torsten Mueller

Hallo,

I would like to put two figures side by side in a float.
I have already done this for subfigues where it works fine.

Is it possible to do it with figures (I need a separate caption)?

Thanks,
Torsten

Two Figures side by side

1999-12-14 Thread Christian Schmitt

Hi,

is there a way to put two figures next to each other in a figure
float. Subfigures puts them under each other. I want them with a caption
and numbered with the other pictures in my text. At least the whole thing
should get a number and a caption. For the individual figures a subcaption
as with subfigures would be nice. But it would be best to have two figure
floats next to each other.

Thanx, Christian

Re: Two Figures side by side

1999-12-14 Thread Yann Collete

hello,

You can use "image float" to put figures side by side.
First, create a figure float.
Hit return (To have the image legend under the figure).
Add the first figure. Move the cursor on the right of the figure and,
Add the second image.
If you want two other image under the two first,
move the cursor on the right of the second image, hit return,
Add the third figure, move the cursor on the right of the figure and,
Add the last figure.
You can, now, add a title for the group of figures or/and, add subtitles
for each figure by using the subfigure menu (click on the figure to pop-up
this menu).
If figures are not side by side, change the size of figures.
Now, you should have a group of figures with a title for the group
(numbered FIG 3.1 for example) and subtitle for each figure (numbered a, b, etc
for example).
