LyX FileMaker Pro (Importing tables into LyX)

2014-05-21 Thread Thomas RuBane
Hi,

I am new to LyX, and am trying to get a feel for what can be done with it. I
hope to be able to switch to LyX from Word, to write legal tile opinions. One
of the elements of a title opinion is a tabulation of deeds and other documents
relevant to the lands under examination. These are formatted as a two column
table, with the label on the left and the value on the right.

I have a custom database created in FileMaker Pro that I use to enter the
information for all of the documents. I then export the relevant records to
Excel, and finally copy the info from Excel into Word. FMPro can export in a
number of formats, CSV, XML, Excel, etc. Does anyone have any experience using
FMPro and LyX together, or any advice on copying a large amount of tabular
information into a LyX document?

Thanks very much,

Tom RuBane

Hi Tom,

You might want to take a look at the spreadsheet.lyx examples file
that comes with LyX. I think it gives a few different ways. For one of
them I believe you need Gnumeric, which I know works on Ubuntu but I
don't know about other OS's.

In general, one way to copy from a spreadsheet to LyX is to make the
table in LyX with the correct dimensions, place the cursor in the
top-left, and press ctrl + shift + v.

Best,

Scott

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but when I need to
import a table from an office document, I usually create a new table the
same size in LyX, then copy-paste the data. This works as long as you use
paste special (or ctrl+shift v). I am not personally aware of a tool that
does more than this, but they may exist.

I hope this helps.
