The possiblity to go back to 1.45 if something does not work and to collaborate with team members using the other version will definitely accelerate the adoption of a new version. It just gives us the opportunity to start using 1.5 even for critical projects without the risk of regretting it a month later. Daniel

LyX 1.5 and 1.4.5
Hi all, Uwe told me that the LyX 1.5 and 1.4.5 will come out soon. Great! But: What is the difference between these versions? Why doesn't 1.5 fully replace 1.4.x ? Is it, that the switch to unicode and other new features is too different so that you better decided to run two versions for a time? Thanks, Matthias Diehl

The purpose of LyX 1.4.5 is interoperability for those that do not wish to upgrade to LyX 1.5.x at this time. The following should hold: * LyX 1.5.0 introduces and uses a new file format (based on UTF etc) Other releases in the 1.5-series (1.5.x) will also use this file format. This file format will not change again until the release of LyX 1.6.0. * LyX 1.4.5 will be capable of reading[*] files saved by LyX 1.5.x So if you decide to upgrade to LyX 1.5.0, but you work with a colleague that prefers LyX 1.4.x, he can use 1.4.5 to open files you have saved. Another scenario could be that you switch to LyX 1.5.0, edit a file and save it in the new file format. Later on you discover a bug in LyX 1.5.0 that's really bad news for you. Don't worry, just install 1.4.5 and open the file even though it was converted to the new file format. /Christian [*] Downgrading from the new file format may not work perfectly. LyX 1.5.0 will use UTF, and if you insert at character that cannot be represented by the old file format, then converting to the old file format will replace the unrepresentable character with a placeholder (???). -- Christian Ridderström, +46-8-768 39 44 http://www.md.kth.se/~chr
