pdflatex is much faster, because PDF is produced directly from
the .tex file lyx makes. One step only.

dvipdfm is slower, as a dvi is produced first, followed by
conversion to pdf.

In addition to the things already mentioned:

pdflatex supports some nifty microtypographical features that latex (and hence
dvipdfm) doesn't. Google for "character protusion" and "font expansion". Most
recent LaTeX distribution use pdflatex as the default processor anyway
(pdflatex can also output dvi).

AFAIK eps can not be handled by pdflatex directly, but LyX converts
included eps files to something that pdflatex can handle.

It depends on what type of figures are in the document.

Also, if you embed pgf commands in your document to produce graphics, I'm
pretty sure you have to use pdflatex (they won't appear in DVI output, or
at least not with any semblance to what you intended).

My impression is that there are nontrivial size differences among the
outputs from various methods, in those cases where all the methods are
capable of generating the right output. I'm not positive about that,
though (and don't recall which produces the smallest files).

I didn't know anything about pgf commands so I looked it up:

http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=drawing
"pgf: while pstricks is very powerful and convenient, using it with PDFLaTeX
is an awful fidget: if you simply want the graphical capabilities, pgf may
be a good bet for you. While PDF has (in essence) the same graphical
capabilities as PostScript, it isn't programmable; pgf provides common LaTeX
commands that will utilise the graphical capabilities of both PostScript and
PDF equally."

Bruce,

No. At least, not for me. I use .eps graphics in book, article, report, and
beamer classes with no problems compiling with pdflatex.

However, when I use PSTricks figures, I need to use ps4pdf to view and
export.

Douglas,

I've used only pdflatex and it produces everything very well. I have not
looked at other output processors because this one works for everything I do.
