Just replace the LyX folder of the LyteX folder with the new one.

 Phil

This is very easy and does its job fine. Why then this projekt ist
abandoned? It should be easy to do and it ist very important for the .

I use LyTeX for my LyX and it seems to be just fine, although it's version
1.6.5
and i haven't

wanted to chance an upgrade to 2.0 for fear of compatibility problems..or
completely knocking
out my LyX.

So I might be willing to try this idea to make a new folder and renaming the
old
one. That won't

break anything and I could always go back if it doesn't work as I expect... or
even .. I could just
copy and make two flash drives; one with 1.6.5 and one with 2.0.

Could you be specific on how you make a new lyx folder?.. I mean what do you
download and install
to make just the folder and not install the full system with miktex, etc.

Thanks,
Phil

This is very easy and does its job fine. Why then this projekt ist
abandoned? It should be easy to do and it ist very important for the
project. Many people dont carry always their notebook around. But the
usb-stick is easy to transport. I hope there is one, who is willing to
update LyTeX.

There are more issues involved here than whether LyX can be made portable.
Some organisations have an clause in their employment contract that using
unapproved or unauthorised software is a dismissable offence with
instantenous dismissal. Just because one can (use LyX on someone else's
system) does not mean that one should.

Also the LyX user does not know what other software is running on the
machine they put their stick into. There may be botnets (4.5millions
machines supposedly running the TDL botnet for example), keyloggers, viruses
and such.

While I appreciate that a portable LyX would be useful (for example, as a
Mac user with LyX installed on all my own machines, I find it frustrating
that on customer/client machines I don't have LyX available to me) let's not
be naive about the implications of what we are doing when using portable
software.

Now maybe if someone developed a cloud version of LyX then these real
objections would be removed but until that happens let's not compromise
ourselves.

Regards, Trevor.

Hello Phil,

thank you for your answer.

I used LyTeX (yes, it is easy to install) and it works good for me... I like
it.

yes, it is very easy to install and works fine. :-) I discoverd LyTex
before I have read your answer. Now I have installed it instead of USBTeX.

Have a nice day

Hello Liviu,

thank you for your answer. You have written:

One way is to install Ubuntu (or similar) on an USB stick and install
on it LyX.

This is no way for me. Nearly all computers where I work, have the
Windows operating system. Linux from a USB flash drive to boot to work
with Lyx and then at the end start again Windows from the hard drive is
too much trouble. Also, my USB Flash Drive have only 8GB of memory. But
thanks for the suggestion.

Liviu

Best regards
Marcus

Hello Phil, hello Liviu,

thank you for your suggestions. Now I have downloaded LyTeX from the
following Webpage:

http://code.google.com/p/lytex/downloads/list

and extract it in a directory on the USB-Stick. LyTeX included portable
versions of MikTeX and LyX and works fine. No other LaTeX-Distribution
is needed.

I'm using LyX together with TexLive, both "portable".
