I'm thinking it may have been an issue outside of LyX, unless LyX provides the default fonts used (which I know it doesn't). The reason for using past tense is that I can no longer reproduce it. Having been concentrating on that one document for the time being, and then grading in the interim, I hadn't experienced anything new until your response... ;-) Now it won't come up. I've upgraded the system at least once, and know texlive was part of that, so I think it was a font issue within the package. Hope so, at least. For the moment, a non-problem.
