 alphabet. Any ideas?

Journals tend to have quirky formatting choices, which are enforced in their
LaTeX class files. I always use the most generic class suitable (usually
article or AMS article) for anything other than an actual journal paper. So my
first suggestion is that you switch from IEEEtran to something with fewer
formatting features embedded in the LaTeX class, and then make any adjustments
you need (with ERT if necessary).

That said, try \renewcommand{\thesubsectiondis}{\arabic{subsection}.} in the
preamble (note the 'dis' appended to the command name).

You need LyX 1.6.7 to get this. If you cannot update to that version,
replace the files IEEEtran.lyx and IEEEtran.layout in your installation
with these ones:

http://www.lyx.org/trac/export/35491/lyx-devel/branches/BRANCH_1_6_X/lib/layouts/IEEEtran.layout

Actually, it doesn't log it on the screen on the Mac -- you have to
open Console.app to see it (or run it manually from the Terminal, as
I just suggested in another thread).

On a fink installation (which is what you've got, right?) that
shouldn't be necessary. (Though are you sure /sw/share/texmf-dist/tex/
latex/base is the right place? ... I haven't used fink, but that
looks like not the right place to put user files.)

Actually, it doesn't log it on the screen on the Mac -- you have to

I just suggested in another thread).

2. What does this report

a look

On a fink installation (which is what you've got, right?) that
shouldn't be necessary. (Though are you sure /sw/share/texmf-dist/tex/
latex/base is the right place? ... I haven't used fink, but that
looks like not the right place to put user files.)

Good morning
Thank you for your help. I've added the class and I've run techhash. I have now the
class Article (IEEEtran) in the layoutdocumentdocument.
But, I have a problem with the author command:
\author{\authorblockN{A1, A2}\authorblockA{affiliation}}
when I preview the article (I use the PS format), the authors' names and affiliation
don't appear (Notice that the system doesn't give any error). Do you have any idea
about this.
Thanks

texhash is used if you add new class, package, or font in texmf database.
If not, that is not necessary.

try to run,

$ kpsewhich yourclass.cls

if no answer, you haven't this class. You must download the class then
copy it in the texmf directory, then run texhash, with a simply command:

$ texhash (as a root/superuser)

the last is try to reconfigure the lyx.

texhash is used if you add new class, package, or font in texmf database.
If not, that is not necessary.

try to run,

$ kpsewhich yourclass.cls

if no answer, you haven't this class. You must download the class then
copy it in the texmf directory, then run texhash, with a simply command:

$ texhash (as a root/superuser)

the last is try to reconfigure the lyx.

With lyx = 1.1.6fix2, you can put the line
\language_use_babel false
in ~/.lyx/preferences , and then LyX will not use babel when the
language of the document is equal to the default language
(The default language can be set in the preferences dialog,
lang_opts-language tab. It is usually English).

I tried

\AtBeginDocument{\usepackage{babel}}

Excuse my ignorance but what was your reasoning behind suggesting using

  I copied IEEETran to /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/.

 I did the texhash thing too, still errors (not there now, sorry not more

 FWIW, I searched from my TeX base directory and got this:

 $ find . -name *.cls |grep -i ieee
 ./TeXLive/texmf/tex/latex/ltxmisc/ieeetrans.cls

LyX will not recognize this as IEEETran.cls. It will be considered a
different latex class.

 ./TeXLive/texmf/tex/latex/IEEEtran/IEEEtran_v15.cls

if this didn't have the _v15 in its name then LyX would recognise
it -- assuming latex can see it.

 You will need to run texhash to update the tex library
 then reconfigure lyx
 then restart lyx and it should be there.

This is because IEEEtran is for a journal. They don't want dates in the
output. You might get dates if you use 'draft' in the extra options for
the document class but this also forces single column and a number of
other things you won't like.

It would seem that while IEEEtran looks pretty you are trying to use it
for a general article and it just isn't written with that in mind. This
is one of the strictest classes around in the sense of the restrictions it
has on output variations compared to say article.cls.

 Any good ideas how to insert date in the document?

Don't. Or modify the class and call it something else.

It was probably an oversite on my part to leave the Date paragraph style
in the layout file.

IEEE is a special class and it makes sense, that there is no
date.

 So I tried to put it into page headers and it appears that
 \markboth{lefttext}{righttext} should do this but I can not get it
 working. I get the following latex error message:
 Package babel error: you haven't defined the language ENGLISH yet
 \end{document}

mark all text and try a layout-character-language-reset

You have made the IEEEtran support for LyX? Well, here are some other
"complaints":

The "Section" style doesn't work in appendix (I tried to write many
appendices, how to do that correctly?). My workaround is to use
"Subsection", but then again I have many sections inside an appendix, and
"subsubsection" doesn't do a good output.

And a bug in LyX undo: if I edit the section where Appendix starts and
then undo my changes, all appendixes disappear and I have to select again
"Layout/Toggle appendix".

Doesn't help. It only helps if I remove \markboth command.

I can latex the IEEEsample.tex and in that \markboth seems to work. I
can't import that document into Lyx.
