Use double quote " . Avoid two apostrophes '' ; avoid two backticks `` ...

Thanks, Joel, but that would mean a lot of writing, since I have many
German references.
What I do not understand is, that the reference seems to be ok:
Article (Buenning1929b) Bünning, E. Über die thermonastischen und
thigmonastischen Blütenbewegungen Planta, 1929, 8, 698-716
and same with the bibtex source:
@Article{Buenning1929b,
author = {Bünning, E.},
title = {\"{U}ber die thermonastischen und thigmonastischen

but the pdf output is still queer

References and Umlaute
I have difficulties with Umlaute in my references (see appended shot). I use Jabref 3.8.1 as a reference manager and Lyx 2.3.0, Debian stretch. Perhaps the newest Jabref can handle it, but I can't install it: we@wolfgang-Mr-Whisper-Ultra-SSD-II:~$ sudo apt install openjfx Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut.
