insert superscript

Not when you are in math mode. I'm sorry I forgot to precise that. In math mode, if you insert a superscript using the 'insert special character' menu, the cursor leaves math mode before inserting the superscript. As a consequence, you insert the superscript *before* your character (i.e. before your math inset). Note that ^ works anyway.
