searching in the references

2013-02-15 Thread Frédéric Parrenin
Dear all,

I often encounter compilation problems linked with the bibliography.
For example, lyx tell me that there is a syntax problem in a given
reference.
Then I need to search where I have inserted the reference in the lyx
document.

How to do that?
The current search tool does not seem to parse the references.

Best regards,

Frédéric Parrenin

You probably want Document Outline and select 'List of Citations'. You
can then type in the filter box (this will only match keys and not any
other information about the reference).

and in addition:
outlinelist of citation sort
which gives you the citations alphabetically
You look for the problematic citation, click on it,
and you are led to the location in the document
(if there are several locations, click again)

Uwe,

The reason I appear so clueless about searching the text file is that when
I'm working within LyX I just don't think of using another tool to make
corrections. I should do such thinking, but it is just not my mind-set at
the time.

Searching in index entries is a nice feature request, that you should post
 on LyX's bugzilla.

OK. I will. I already requested that the gray idx box hold the index
string (as does an ERT indicator box) rather than just idx. Perhaps both
features are related.

On a different, but still LyX-related topic, I used LyX to prepare and
typeset 18 pages of comments from my review of a resource agency draft
report. The initial reaction of those who saw it and flipped through the
pages was, Wow!. That is obviously to the visual impression made by the
typeset output and not by my cleverness, erudition and masterly-insightful
writing because they hadn't gotten to that part yet.

This is one of the reasons I like LyX/LaTeX so much. Along with well
produced maps (in full color, of course, and only when appropriate), the
visual impact immediately catches the reader's attention and makes them more
receptive to the ideas contained in the document. I've seen this for years
and no longer question the psychological value of a good presentation.

Many thanks,

Rich

There's a reason that the LyX file format is plain text, you know...

From the console:
$ grep -n '^\\begin_inset LatexCommand \\index' yourfile.lyx

Or even:
$ sed -n '/^\\begin_inset LatexCommand \\index/{
=; s/[^{]*{\([^}]*\)}/\1/p
}' yourfile.lyx

which should print out just the index itself, preceded by the line on which
it is found in the lyx file.

   Sigh. Of course!
