I think a lot of your responders missed the point that it's all about styles. 
I've made excellently formatted books in WordPerfect 5.1, MS Word and LyX. In 
all three my secret was using styles rather than formatting on a case by case 
basis. The real problem is that the mindset of MS Word authors is 
fingerpainting.

I really liked what one of your responders said:

Somewhere I have a text copy of my thesis, written in LaTeX. My guess is that 
18 years after the fact it'll still render a reasonable facsimile of the 
original. Try that with a proprietary word processor format.

Truer words have never been spoken!
