cool. no lyx and not on the list ... 

\begin{figure*}[optional placement like htb]
...bla...
\end{figure*}

much more easier with LyX: you only insert a wide figure.

I inserted some wide math matrices using Insert/Floats/Wide table
float. Maybe you could use it (or wide figure) too (and yes, I was using
IEEEtran). I don't know about package graphix.
