That might be a nice feature. I know it was very helpful to me that one
could do the same with text going into a footnote; I imagine that a
reverse step with footnotes might also be useful (perhaps via
right-mouse clicking on the note?).

Could someone simply confirm whether this does or does not work as

Concerning notes, the branch feature of LyX 1.4 will do what you want
and more.

This was the so-called 'melt' feature, which is gone now. I think it
is going to come back at some time in 1.4.x.

Letf or right clicking brings the index dialog here on LyX 1.3.3 and

Thanks!

When I add an index list via the "Insert --> Lists & TOC" menu I get a
white box with the word "Index" in it. No amount of clicking of any
kind, anywhere around it brings up a dialogue window. I also see no
reference to makeindex in my Preferences menu. But the indexing works
fine.

Is the index dialogue accessible otherwise -- or does anyone have any
idea what might not be working? I'm already using a separate script to
intercept the call to makeindex, so perhaps it is not that important,
but it's of course frustrating when something doesn't seem to work and
one can't figure out why.

This inset is indeed not editable, and that's why it is not shown as a
3d button.

The index entries are editable though.

The part of the documentation you are referring to concerns the index
entries and are not relevant to running makeindex.

What are you trying to do?

The long term solution is lyx 1.4, where you do this with
branch insets. (Any branch can be turned on or off
whenever you want to.)

The short term solution for undoing a note is cut&paste:
1. Mark everything inside the note
2. Cut the stuff
3. Move the cursor outside the now empty note
4. Paste the stuff back into the document again, this time outside the note
5. Remove the empty note if you wish

There is no layout only designed for theses. I can recommend to use the

I see. The (1.3.5) Extended Features guide only refers to clicking on
"the index button" not to clicking on "an index entry button". To avoid
confusion, it should perhaps say (if in the new version it doesn't
already):

"Clicking on an index entry ("Idx") button re-opens the index tag,
allowing you to edit it (LaTeX is accepted so be careful about adding
any special characters) and use the advanced options provided by the
makeindex helper application you are using (see XXX)."

Using "an", "index entry", "Idx" and "tag" (which is what the Guide
already calls this) makes it less confusing (or so I hope).

> What are you trying to do?

I wanted to change how makeindex is called by LyX (perhaps in 1.4 this
is configurable in the preferences), but I found a wrapper script to do
this already.

Hollow Box Similar to \rule?

2006-01-06 Thread Rich Shepard

Happy New Year, folks:

On my OMR form the marking boxes need to be a specific size (3.0mm wide x
2.54mm high). My research in Guide to LaTeX taught me how to use a \rule box
as a strobe mark, but that's filled by default and I cannot find an
equivalent command to create an empty box of specified size.

The initial design uses an uppercase 'O' (thanks to Herbert), but a box
with square corners is needed.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

TIA,

Missing references bug: lyx not calling pdflatex again?

2006-01-06 Thread Fernando Perez
Hi all,

I've searched both bugzilla and the lists for help on this problem, so far
without luck. Any hints would be most welcome.

I have a document with a bibtex-generated list of references, and when I try to
export it to PDF or postscript (via the GUI or with 'lyx -e pdf2', for
example), all the citations appear as [??] marks, though the references
section is correctly generated.

The only workaround I've been able to find is to click on the 'bibtex
references' box at the end, make some trivial change (choose a different
style, or check the 'add to TOC' box), and rerun the PDF/PS generation. THEN,
the numbers appear, and I can revert my trivial change and continue.

Needless to say, it is incredibly annoying to have to do this every time, and
it breaks my makefile-based workflow (this is a document being developed in
collaboration from many places, so I wrote a makefile to generate all the
required PDFs without human intervention).

I'd be very appreciative of any help or hints.

Cheers,

Help Needed with Multido{}

2006-01-06 Thread Rich Shepard

I'm caught in an infinite loop here. Kevin was very helpful in suggesting
that I use \framebox rather than \makebox; that gives me a rectangular, empty
box (as long as there's no text to frame). Now I have three issues that I've
not been able to resolve. I hope someone here can help me.

1.) The \multido{} loop in lines 69-71 does not produce the desired
results. I want each framebox in line 71 to be 3mm wide, but if I reduce the
width from 7mm, the lines are combined; that is, the even numbered line is
next to the odd nunber line. I need a total text width of 72mm, so there
should be room for 10 3mm boxes with a bit of space between each one. When I
try adding a \hspace{} in there it gets all messed up.

2.) I'd like the \framebox{} to be horizontally aligned with the black
strobe box along the left margin. In ghostview it appears a bit lower.

3.) I need to align the boxes above the Preference block with a column in
that block. I've not found how to specify a specific location along the width
of a line for the placement of the \framebox{}.

My reading in the Multido doc, TLC2, Guide to LaTeX 4th ed, and The LaTeX
Graphics Companion has not let me find the answer.

TIA,

Rich

Typically with Latex the first run would generate missing references such as
this. If I am running Latex manually, I simply run it twice. That way the
appropriate temporary files are generated so that the second run can read
them.

I thought LyX would do the same thing.

Kevin,

Thanks for your efforts. If you look at the .tex file I attached to my post
you'll see that there are 286 little boxes (3mm wide x 2.54mm high). That's a
lot of \picture{} environments to design and place. :-)

By manipulating \hspace{} and \framebox{} in the nested \multido{} I'm
getting closer to what's needed. The spacing is still too wide, and the last
row is not spaced the same as the previous rows. I've no idea why right now.

Unfortunately, when Optical Mark Recognition scanners are designed they
have very tight tolerances for size and placement of the marks they'll be
able to process. I know that LaTeX has the ability to put the boxes on the
page in the right places, the trick is for me to learn how to do it. For
example a negative \vspace{} closes up lines rather than raising the
\framebox a bit above the baseline. That's not helpful.
