few *sold & completed* auctions on ebay shows that at least some people are

The "Big Computer Games" book is not among them, but would probably be in

I'm somewhat interested in doing one of those "Raspberry Pi in a 100 case"
projects. Does anyone have a dead 100/102 for sale, and at what price? Due
to the nature of the project, the screen could be total trash (even gone),
the PCB etc. doesn't matter... only thing important would be an intact
keyboard.

If you have one to get rid of, shoot me a price (and shipping)... off or on
list is fine.

Yours, Russell

Windows 10. And btw, my desktop computer has an actual serial port, the 9
pin kind, so I'm not using any kind of DB9/25-to-USB device or anything.

2020-11-11 Thread Russell Flowers
I sent an incorrect link at first. The second link instructs you to set the
serial port parameters with this command:

*mode comx: 1200,e,7,1*

(where x is 1 or course, so COM1:)

And then for the PC to receive:

*copy comx: filename*

2020-11-11 Thread Russell Flowers
Update on this - the paperclip test did show data looping back through.

I used a simple program called "RealTerm" and everything performed as
expected, just fine.

For some reason, using Windows CMD prompt ("copy com1: filename.txt", or
"copy com1: con:") produces nothing. I *can* send files TO the 100 with
"copy filename.txt com1:" ... so it's not worth worrying about, since every
other connection method works fine.

Thanks, all.

[M100] Simple communication, M100 -> com1: ... can download from PC, but can't upload

2020-11-10 Thread Russell Flowers
I know that pretty much *every other method* of communication between the
PC and the 100 beats this, but I have a problem that is bothering me.

Following this guide:

https://www.ordersomewherechaos.com/rosso/fetish/m102/web100/docs/hints-tips.html

I can easily download a text file from PC to 100.

But I can't upload a simple text file from the 100 to the PC. On the M100
side, it looks fine - the "Up" menu option is inverse for a time, but after
that I try to send CTRL-Z to the PC and nothing happens on the PC.

I even tried "copy com1: con:" to see if anything was printed, and I don't
see it. So I'm not sure if it sends the file but not the CTRL-Z, or if the
100 is sending nothing (or the PC is not receiving).

Any ideas? Thanks, Russ

My M100 has the black vinyl soft cover. Good for general keeping, but I do
have to remind myself not to stack stuff on it. A cloth one would work as
well. That got me to thinking about those plastic "expanding" folders... if
you removed the folder divisions somehow, that might make a good carrying
case.

I used my M100 way back in 2005. It was perfect for writing close to the
1700 words per day I needed during my lunch hour. At night I would transfer
the text through the serial port. (I think back then my desktop had an
RS-232 serial port as well as USB.)

If I click filename in the first column, I get a pop-up with the word "File

Re: [M100] My TRS-80 M100 and going to the park

2015-05-08 Thread Russell Flowers
That is an interesting story. I found that M100s garner a lot of attention
out in public. I always show off the keyboard. Modern laptops can't hold a
candle to the feel of those keys.

It's also interesting that there will be one generation, or maybe two,
tops, that understand what a personal computer really is. Before the
1970s or early 80s, people knew about computers but had no concept of one
that resided in the home. Now, everyone grows up with a computer in the
house, tablets laying about... they will find them no more remarkable than
a washing machine or TV.

class as an enthusiastic/user. I use my M100 for writing articles for my
vintage tech blog, the battery life just makes it a great machine to use.
The screen is far superior to the Amstrad NC100 I was using previously,

Anyways, I thought I would share with you an experience I had with my M100
last week, while we had a spell of sunshine. I know it's not exactly
dissecting a system rom or anything ambitious as getting an M100 online
over wifi. But I thought I would share it, as it's was a fun moment using a
30yr old computer for what it was meant for.

Last week the sun blessed us with an appearance, so a group of us 'nerds'
decided to venture out in to the sunshine to soak up some Vitamin D! I
packed a rucksack and threw my M100 inside, thinking I could finish off a
blog post. Sitting on the picnic blanket with a flask of tea, I kept having
people come up to me, inquiring about the Tandy. I genuinely didn't think
anyone would raise an eye brow, aside from take pity on the sad nerd who
couldnt afford a Macbook Air. To my surprise people wanted to know about
the little machine, which I was more then happy to tell them about. Even if
it did mean I didn't get any work done! Some of them sort of knew what it
was, while others were completely baffled. One guy even asked if I hooked
it up to the PC using USB. When I explained to him that I used a serial
cable, there was a lost expression his face. Clearly not a lover of old
RS-232! The oddest part of the outing was having my friends seven year old
son approach me, looking genuinely confused.

 What is that?
 It's a computer I replied
No, it doesn't have a lid Argued the child
That's a laptop, this is a portable computer. See this label on the
front, it says 'Portable Computer', it can work out maths problems and I
can write on it just like a regular computer
It's not a computer, it doesn't have a screen! how do you close the lid?
It doesn't need a lid and the screen is there see!

So if you want to confuse a small child, wave an old computer at them and
watch their brain explode lol. Having grown up in the 80's, it's really
difficult to get my head around the fact there is a generation now, that
see's touchscreens as common place. I really wonder what they would make of
sitting in front of a C64 and typing out a program listing from a book,
like I did when I was 7-8 years old. Thats what I think of when someone
 says the word computer.

Anyways, that was a random adventure with my M100, still a useful work
horse. Hope nobody objected to me sharing :-)

 Hi Russell,

Yeah, that first link was the only one I managed to find. They don't
allow anonymous FTP anymore. I'll check out the second one. I do remember
 it being in Pascal.

 Thanks,
 Jeff

 Hi everyone,

Does anyone remember an old BBS Door called Geopolitiks ? It was a
multi-player global war game I used to play on various BBSes back in the
 80s and 90s.

I managed to find the source code for it a few years back but my hard
 drive was stolen.

I figured maybe someone on the list would remember it.

 Thanks,
 Jeff

Awesome!

In the picture it looks like there is a cable coming from the barcode wand
port and going back to the M100... but I don't think there is a port there
is there? Did you stick Bluetooth module in the battery compartment?
