2022-09-19 Thread Reo PDA
I put 3 model 100s on Ebay that I think are unique. The pictures there are
interesting anyway. All 3 were used at 'The Record', a newspaper in
Hackensack New Jersey. I purchased them from ebay many years ago as 'not
working'. I thought they would be great projects. But when I took out the
old crusty batteries, cleaned the contacts, and put new batteries in, they
all worked! The keyboards feel a little soft to me. I think I removed
dental rings from the keyboard on at least one of them, wish I had left it
alone now. Nothing was in the Option ROM sockets on any of these machines.

I will download and setup the rom2s1.do file later today. This community
continues to amaze me with how much has been done and made available for folks
to use. Thanks!!

For transfers I’ve been using mComm 2.5 as my go-to TPDD emulator, run inside
Windows emulated with Parallels on my Mac, using a USB to RS232 cable adapter.
I do have a working TPDD1 which I use on occasion for floppy backups, but for
day to day activity, saving and sending files back and forth, etc. I use the
above setup. (One of these days I’ll explore the Mac-native options, but this
works well and I’m in the emulator every so often for work stuff anyway, so
it’s convenient enough and it’s rock solid.)

Again, thanks!

That would be,

And the serial cable:
http://tandy.wiki/Model_T_Serial_Cable

And a serial terminal app on a modern pc. For Windows I'd say probably
TeraTerm
https://osdn.net/projects/ttssh2/releases/
On linux I use minicom. I'd probably use minicom on mac too though I don't
know if there's something more convenient on mac.

I apologize, this could use a bit more help and direction than "use this
comm program" but that'll have to be later.

I think there might be an app that writes directly to a file via TPDD too,
instead of using a terminal program to capture plain text. I might be
inventing that, I'll have to look around. That wouldn't be necessarily
fewer or easier steps just different. But it would mean setting up a tpdd
emulator and installing a tpdd client on the t102, which is just a handy
thing you're going to want in general anyway.

For any NEC rom (meaning, does NOT need a pinout adapter like all the
100/102/200 roms do) you could get a bare TL-866 from ebay.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/233816729184
The software is free and easy. (or at least, I could tell you what to do

For any of the 100/102/200 roms it gets a little more complicated. You
either need to be able to remove the chip from the pinout adapter, or
get a DIP test clip (28 or more pins) (and some wires and a DIP-28

I would do it. But I would also walk you through using the TL-866 if you

The “4” was misleading. It is just the way that the font looks. It
just says Disk+, not sure what version but it is probably the 2.0 that
you have. What is really odd is everything I have read about it so far
says it came on cassettes and nothing about an option ROM at all.

I wouldn’t have any grief about dumping what I have, though. I don’t
imagine anyone is lacking the Interactive Solutions ROM that I also have?

I am actually more excited that I have the custom carriers for the
option ROMs than the ROMs themselves. Ultimately I am looking to build
my own custom option ROM as I have an end use for this in mind that
will give it a relatively single purpose.

I have a Disk+ 2.0 rom I dumped here:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bys6eLbSbYyhU01uYjFYNnpkTmM

I would be interested in that "4" version. It can be dumped via software

from the 100 using ROM2S

http://www.club100.org/memfiles/index.php?=0==Steve%20Adolph/ROM2S

Does anyone have the host side of this? The description in that ad

sounds like a modified DOS bootable TPDD emulator, or had versions for

The carrier won't do you too much good most likely.
The socket has a non-standard pinout, and so most roms and definitely
any chip you can write (27C256), needs a pinout adapter as well as a way
to make the physical connection.

You could make use of the adapter if one of these is true:

* You have a DIP-28 (or larger) test clip AND the pinout adapter doesn't
hard short the VPP pin to VCC or GND. I think they all do. If it had a
10k+ resistor instead of a trace, then it would be ok, but no commercial
rom maker did that that I ever saw. If the adapter hard-shorts vpp, then
you need to desolder the chip from the adapter to write it, or at least
cut the vpp leg and add a resistor and removable jumper to the adapter
somehow.

* Or unless one of your adapters is a "ROMBO", like this:
https://goo.gl/photos/AaqKUGoY6oGEZdxM6

Otherwise I expect the Disk+ one at least, if not both, is the same as this:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/SN7qC3BXXBFX7bMg7

There is another style like this:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/zRyssWsAuXTAWHwV6

And finally there is the Multiplan style where Tandy actually had custom
chips made that had the right pinout, so they are just installed in the
Molex carrier normally. But those chips are special. You can't do that
with a 27C256.

Otherwise in all cases except the ROMBO, the chip legs are either bent
around the standard carrier or soldered into a pinout adapter pcb.
Either way it makes it a problem to write the rom more than once. Even
for the style that doesn't need soldering, you can't bend and unbend the
legs very many times before one breaks.

If you have a rombo style, then the 27C256 can be installed and removed
and reinstalled in the adapter as many times as you want without bending
the legs, so you can remove the chip from the pinout adapter to re-write
the chip all you want.

You're going to want to get a REX#, REXCPM, REX Classic, or make a
Teeprom, if you want to play with writing and hacking on roms.

REX is like a software controllable, software loadable, on-board option
rom library. REXCPM is that plus the amazing ability to replace the
normal system rom with CPM and up to 4M of virtual disk. (all purely in
ram though so it's kind of touchy vs REX Classic or REX# which are flash
based)

REX# or REX Classic would be the hands-down most convenient way to play
with roms. You load them as ordinary files from a modern pc over the
serial port, and load up to 32 of the and overwrite them all you want.
No burner, no uv eraser.

Teeprom needs a burner and a soic-28 test clip, but at least no uv
eraser because the rom chip is 28C256 instead of 27C256. It DOES have a
resistor instead of a dead short for vpp so it can be simply connected
to the a burner and written at will. There are a few odd cases where you
want a plain rom and not a REX, but honestly not many.

REXCPM , REX#

REX Classic (build your own)
http://tandy.wiki/Building_a_REX

Also, for REX Classic, this board provides a good way to use the
software main rom feature that only REX Classic has:
It provides a main rom on a updateable 28C256, so you could install a
y2k-patched version, but the real point is it provides a convenient way
to hook up the /CE line for REX to take over the job of providing the
main rom, but also let's you remove the REX and re-enable the internal
rom without taking the machine apart again.

And for a plain rom:

If you still wanted some of the carriers knowing about the pinout
problem, I have a bunch and you can have some.

You can also buy them new 3d-printed.

Cool, happy to help with the exploration!

Just getting into the hardware side of things, and I don’t have a NEC to try
out the R2/Clu chip. Thoughts on how I could dump this? Or a gadget I could
order to help me do that?

Or I mail it to someone who would know what to do with it? (I have a small set
of operational T102s, two non-functional T200s, and an awesome T. WP-2, but
alas no NECs.)

Any thoughts on the Gold v7.10 chip? Is that of any interest? I would be happy
to install that into a T102 and see what happens when I call 63012, in the name
of science!

Cheers,

I didn't get the impression that Disk+ had anything to do with the TPDD.
This appears to be specifically designed for communications with another
computer, not a disk drive. It seems to cover several systems: Apple II,
CP/M, and MS-DOS, but the ad did not say anything about the portable disk
drive.

I am pretty sure I have the manual for Disk+ around and maybe an OptROM or
cassette. I've never used it and didn't know it was missing.

Portable 100 has a review
Kepner, Terry. "Disk+ gives Model 100 disk drives." Aug 84:71-73.

https://ftp.whtech.com/club100/doc/p100-8408.pdf

PCSG

Disk+ is apparently a client/server program. Similar to the combo of TS-DOS
and LaddieAlpha, though I don't know what the actual protocol is.

And there are server / host programs for vintage micros if you can find the
software. Apple II, TRS-80 Model 4, IBM PC, etc.

You shouldnt have to transfer to tape.

Should be able to play from your computer or phone through headphone jack.

I just stumbled across this on Facebook. I haven't had much time to look at
it, but it looks like it might be of interest.

*Retrochallenge 2016/01: Maze War for Olivetti M10 and NEC PC-8201A*

*"I recently acquired two 1983 portable computers, namely an Olivetti M10
and a NEC PC-8201A. Both are siblings of the Kyocera KC-85 platform,
comprising — in alphabetical order — Kyocera's own Kyotronic 85, the NEC
PC-8201(A), the Olivetti M10, and, last but not least, the TRS-80 Model
100, with about 6 million sold the most popular of all. (1984 saw the
addition of two further models featuring more initial RAM and refined ROMs,
the NEC PC-8300 and the TRS-80 Model 102.)*

*"These computers came with a nice version of Microsoft BASIC v.1, a LCD
display featuring 8 rows at 40 characters and a graphics resolution of 240
× 64 pixels, and a nice implementation of serial communications via
RS-232C (the NEC PC-8201 adds two more SIO interfaces). So we should be
able to network the machines and have a decent game of Maze War running on
them, preferably written as a single cross-platform program."*
