Not surprising; there's a lot of clock inaccuracy out there. A lot of modern
PCs (including high-end servers I have personally worked with) actually keep
worse time than a $5 wristwatch, but we don't notice because they all do NTP
sync on a regular basis.

> in mind. Not sure about the +32 minute thing.

Yeah, it's weird. I set the clock 32 minutes slow and files come out
timestamped correctly, so I wonder if anybody else has noticed this with their
NADSBox. If not, I'll just make a mental note (or a label for inside the
battery door) to do this when I update the clock in the future. It would be
really bizarre if this were only happening to me, though.

Re: [M100] NADSBoxes are ready (not on sale until Tuesday

2019-10-24 Thread Kenneth Pettit
Hey Jim,

I added the battery backed real-time-clock in the NADSBox so it could put
timestamps on files written to the SD card. However during extended testing, I
learned that the clock is not that accurate and drifts over time. I’m not sure
if this is due to a PCB layout issue, a mismatch in the 32KHz crystal
capacitance or what.

But it will loose or gain seconds and minutes over time. Just keep that in
mind. Not sure about the +32 minute thing.

Imagine my amazement when I got home from work today (Wednesday - yes I know
it's after midnight now) and there was the box from Ken! I don't know how you
got them to do it but this is quite literally the fastest I have ever received
a parcel from the U.S. and I am so happy with the NADSbox - a great piece of
work!

Only one question for Ken: files I copy onto the SD card seem to be timestamped
exactly 32 minutes ahead of the time set in the NADSbox. I did notice when I
first set it up that the time was set behind current, and I fixed it but didn't
make a note of how far behind it was, so I'm wondering if you had shipped it
out with the clock set 32 minutes slow to compensate for this?

After a little experimentation I found that if I set the time and 'copy con' a
file from the terminal interface, the file has the correct timestamp. If I
then use TS-DOS to copy a file into the NADSbox it will have a timestamp that
is +32 minutes, and if I *then* go to the terminal interface and 'copy con'
another new file it will now have a timestamp +32 minutes...

I've got the time set 32 minutes slow now and it seems to be reliably creating
files with the correct timestamp so I'm not sure if this is the fix or not.

Hi Brian,

Yes, that order request was on March 9th, 2016. I considered your
suggestion, but it has been *many* years since I processed any orders
for NADSBoxes as they were not available. It appears they have not been
available since early 2015, and I have absolutly no idea where I would
start with this approach. I don't have good records about which of the
orders were processed and which were not, other than wading through
years of emails from two different servers (my PayPal account is linked
to a Hotmail account, not Club100 where the orders come in).

Looking at the orders, there have been more than 15 offical un-processed
orders for NADSBoxes between early 2015 and 2017. And I have received
other non-order-form type emails asking "Is the any chance of getting a
NADSBox". However over the past 4 years, I was not even sure I was
going to have any more availabe for sale. There was no commitment to
NADSBoxes ever being available again, only that there were no more. Is
it fair to consider a product that is out of production to be on "back
order" over a 4 year period? I don't know.

This is why I believe the only fair way to handle it is to give everyone
advance notice exactly when they will go on sale. It was either that or
put them on eBay and let the higetst bidder win. No matter how I sell
them, I can't make everyone happy:

1. Consider 4-yr old orders as "back order": Newcomers won't be happy.
2. Sell them to the first 15 people who place an order: People "back
orders" may not be happy if they don't get one.

3. Put them on eBay: Only the richest will be happy (well, and me too! ;)

I had sent an email a couple of weeks ago asking if anyone had a better
suggestion about how to deal with selling these 15 NADSBoxes in a fair
manner and recieved no responses. So I moved forward with a plan, be it
good, bad or indifferent.

Respectfully,
Ken

If you send it to me, I'll pay for it, since I placed the order in
good faith. But with only 15 available, and with me playing with
arduino code, I am fine letting someone else take "mine".

Except I bet more than 15 other people placed orders way before mine,
and by rights, if it were me, I'd be emailing the oldest 15 orders to
at least offer them dibs before giving them to anyone else.

[M100] NADSBoxes are ready (not on sale until Tuesday

2019-09-21 Thread Ken Pettit

Hey Gang,

Well, I received the remaining components I needed to finish up the
NADSBoxes. I now have 15 units debugged, reworked, tested, assembled
and ready for shipping (see attached photo). I will send an email this
Tuesday at 11:00 am PDT (San Diego Time) with a link to the order form.

Not everyone who has indicated an interest in purchasing a NADSBox lives
in a USA timezone, so I will sell 9 units at 11:00am to the first 9
people who order them (assuming there are 9 people who are interested).
Then I will sell the remaining 6 units to the first orders recieved on /
after Tuesday at 11:00pm PDT. This should give anyone on the other side
of the globe a chance also.

The price for NADSBox is and has always been $195 USD plus shipping ($10
domestic, $15 international).
