David, I not upgraded my mac yet to the 10.9.1 update, but it appears
the finder busy bug has been fixed. But all around there seems to be
much disappointment. Apple promised to fix loads of VoiceOver issues a
while back, and they're not present in 10.9.1. Ar dear.

Re: Mavericks - Is it now time to upgrade?

2013-12-17 Thread Phil Halton
David, like you, I used to use column browser mode almost exclusively unless I
needed to see the date or size of a file.
Then I found that list view is just as flexible as column view. you can use the
arrow keys by themselves to open and close folders. you don't need to use the
command O or command down arrow keystrokes to open a folder unless you want to
make it the current folder for pasting etc.
So, its really just as flexible as column view, with the added benefit of
having access to the file meta data that isn't there in column view.

VO left and right arrows will move across the meta data, while left and right
arrows alone will open and close a subfolder. Check it out, you might grow to
like it.

Hope you and Gyan have a wonderful Merry Christmas!

We’re home this year for the first time in many! My brother’s kids are still
both going to school at Northern Arizona University, and won’t be going to
California this year for Christmas, so my brother is coming here. He’ll arrive
some time late in the afternoon on Christmas Eve day. It will be a short trip
for him, but we all wanted to be together on Christmas!

I hope you and Gyan are both doing well, and that you have a wonderful 2014!
We’re not sending out Christmas cards this year, so please don’t be offended at
not receiving one from us! We have been extremely busy, and we just decided
that along with the expense, it was more of a project than we wanted to
undertake this year!

Upgraded Currency Reader App Launched by Bureau of Engraving and Printing
A new version of the EyeNote™ mobile device application (app) that
denominates U.S. currency was released by the Department of the Treasury’s
Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) today, replacing the version
originally launched in April 2011. The newer version is easier and quicker
to operate because it uses a continuous scan function to identify the note,
rather than requiring the user to take a picture.
EyeNote™ can be downloaded for free onto many Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod
products. It recognizes all Federal Reserve notes issued since 1996,
including the new $100 note that began circulating in October, and
communicates the denomination back to the user through an audible response
(English or Spanish) or a vibration pulse mode for privacy. EyeNote™ was
developed by BEP as an interim solution to increase accessibility to Federal
Reserve notes among blind and visually impaired individuals while the U.S.
government develops a system of raised tactile features to incorporate into
 future redesigned notes.
“The recent enhancements made to the EyeNote™ app make it an even more
effective tool to assist people in denominating U.S. currency,” said
Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios. “It offers portability and speed,
both requirements when used in a retail environment, and the convenience of
not needing to carry around a separate reader by using one’s personal mobile
device.” The EyeNote™ app has more than 14,000 downloads since the 2011
 launch.
Users who downloaded the original version of EyeNote™ will automatically
receive notification on their devices that an updated version of the app is
available to download. Others can download the upgraded version for free
through the Apple App Store℠ via iTunes®.

Re: accessible Keyboard editor for the mack.

2013-12-17 Thread Esther
Hello Jim,

I think Sarah is referring to Eric Caron's podcast about using KeyRemap4MacBook
that was posted to this list, but which is probably more easily accessed from
the Guides section at AppleVis, since there is more background information,
along with comments and updates there. This is probably the easiest way to do
what you want, but in most cases you need to know the key code sequences for
the functions you want to redefine. Eric wanted to remap the Caps Lock key on
his Mac to act as the VoiceOver Control+Option keys, so he asked the developer
for help, and the dev added an option for making it easy to do this
configuration. So Eric's podcast was about how to implement this new feature
when using KeyRemap4MacBook along with a second application at the same site,
PCKeyboardHack. It wasn't meant to be a general podcast about how to remap
keys with this software.

KeyRemap4MacBook may be downloaded from:
http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/

KR4MB (to abbreviate the name) is a donationware program that is a general key
remapper for all keyboards used with Macs - not just MacBooks or Mac laptops.
By donationware I mean that the program is free to download, but if you find
it useful it's suggested that you make a small donation to support the
continuing development. If you want to read more about the details of using
this software, here's a link to my archived list post from the summer of last
year:
• NumPad on laptop Macs and KeyRemap4MacBook:
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg12382.html

The quick explanation of the default behavior of KR4MB is that installing this
software will let you use the keys on the right side of the keyboard, where
there is normally an embedded Numeric Keypad enabled with a NumLock key on
Windows laptops, as a Numeric Keypad when you press those keys in combination
with the Fn key. If you don't want this behavior, you can disable it by
unchecking a box in the software, and you can just use the other remapping
options. But what is very slick about this for VoiceOver users is that the
activated embedded NumPad can work with all the NumPad Commander keyboard
shortcuts that you can customize, and will work correctly with all the modifier
key definitions (e.g., with additional presses of the Command key, or Shift
key, etc.)

The main difference in using the program now is that the menus I described were
included inside the program when the next major version update was released, so
they're not associated with a preference pane outside of the program any more.
Also, the developer incorporated Eric's requested customization into that (and
subsequent) releases, so you no longer have to get the special version of KR4MB
that he described in his podcast or its notes.

The program's web site does contain full information. it's just that this
information is laid out in the more minimalist style of documentation that
Linux users will recognize. So my archived post gives some details about the
most efficient ways I found of navigating the options with VoiceOver.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

remapper for all keyboards used with Macs - not just MacBooks or Mac laptops.

The quick explanation of the default behavior of KR4MB is that installing this software
will let you use the keys on the right side of the keyboard, where there is normally an
embedded Numeric Keypad enabled with a NumLock key on Windows laptops, as a Numeric
Keypad when you press those keys in combination with the Fn key. If you
don't want this behavior, you can disable it by unchecking a box in the software, and you
can just use the other remapping options. But what is very slick about this for
VoiceOver users is that the activated embedded NumPad can work with all the NumPad
Commander keyboard shortcuts that you can customize, and will work correctly with all the
modifier key definitions (e.g., with additional presses of the Command key, or Shift key,
etc.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Aric something or other. Basically they are system pref pains that you could
use to change the way keys behave and what they do for example have your

Take care.

to emulate a standard recorder keyboard.

Reccomendations for Bluetooth headset for iPhone which is Voiceover compatible

2013-12-17 Thread Rodney Haynie
Ok, this is a bit of a wide open request. I am looking for a bluetooth
headset that will work well with the iPhone5 and Voiceover.

The only other requirements I have are, if it is a single ear unit,
then it needs to have something that wil not allow it to drop to the
ground if it comes off of the ear while walking.

I am not afraid of getting more info on specific models, but would
like somewhere to start from.

Thanks.

Re: accessible persision audio editor for the Mack

2013-12-17 Thread Dane Trethowan
Couldn't agree with you more on that.

I would also add that much of the power of Amadeus Pro is hidden away and is
not immediately evident and its only by playing with the software and perhaps
taking a little time to read some of the manual that you really get a feel for
the software.

Even the multi track recording can be used to great effect though the Interface
and controls could do with a little refinement.

I use the other editors mentioned here and do very much wish that Goldwave was
available for the Mac but - until that time comes if it ever does - Amadeus Pro
will do a very fine job.

Re: Reccomendations for Bluetooth headset for iPhone which is Voiceover compatible

2013-12-17 Thread Dane Trethowan
As you've seen, Bluetooth headsets abound! so I would take some time and go to
a place like an electronics shop or phone reseller who may have stock of these
items, take your IOS device along so you can try each headset in mind.

There are some things I'd look out for, make sure the headset you purchase is
at least Bluetooth 3.0 compatible which makes a huge difference of the clarity
of what you'll hear and other people may hear if you're using it for phone
calls, also means that the headset will be compatible with Siri.

Also stick to the know brands if possible, for example its known that Senheiser
and BW make excellent headsets and probably always will.

2013-12-17 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Ah men to that. If I can ever get my voice back I will be using amadeus to put
together a package with my prof and that will require some very fine editing
which amadeus can do with very very good results so I say to the original
poster, give it a go and be blessed and good luck.

Couldn't agree with you more on that.

I would also add that much of the power of Amadeus Pro is hidden away and is
not immediately evident and its only by playing with the software and perhaps
taking a little time to read some of the manual that you really get a feel
 for the software.

Even the multi track recording can be used to great effect though the
Interface and controls could do with a little refinement.

I use the other editors mentioned here and do very much wish that Goldwave
was available for the Mac but - until that time comes if it ever does -
Amadeus Pro will do a very fine job.

Actually it is very accessible if you really know how to use it. I don't
think you will be using anything else once you do learn how to use it.
Simply drop the markers where you want by hitting p, then if you need to use
the marker window to make your edits more prosise.

 take care.

Thanks for your poast: actually, I don't find the program accessible for
in depth editing compared to programs such as SoundForge or Goldwave. It's
that kind of access I'm looking for.

Again, thanks all over the place.
