How can I stop streadsheets opening in Numbers at the top cell all the time?

2014-08-16 Thread Andy Collins
Hi all -

When I open a spreadsheet in Numbers, I want ti to open at the last row of
cells, but it always opens at the top [a1], this is after I’ve interacted to
get rid of the template screen, which I always get when Numbers opens. I’ve
looked in the preferences for Numbers, but couldn’t see anything that would let
me change where the cursor is when opening a spreadsheet -

Hello Andy,

As far as I know, you can’t change this behaviour. But what’s so difficult
about doing Cmd-down Arrow to get to the last row? Alternatively, you can do
VO-Shift-End to get to the last cell.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Anne -

When I do CMD down arrow, I just get that ding sound that indicates the key
stroke doesn’t exist, same for VO shift down arrow, that’s why I asked on list.
Maybe I’am not using Numbers correctly. Each time I open a spreadsheet, I land
in the layout area. I have to hit VO shift down arrow twice to actually get in
to the body of the spreadsheet. Once there, I can’t do CMD down arrow to get to
the end of the spreadsheet as mentioned above -

2014-08-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

I interact once with the table then I can press Cmd-Down Arrow and I’m at the
bottom of that column. Cmd-Right Arrow takes me to the end of the row. I have
my mouse set to ignore the other cursors but I don’t know whether that makes a
difference.

Another thought, have you set Cmd-Down Arrow to do something else in Numbers?
Someone I know set Cmd-c as a short cut for something other than Copy and
wondered why it wasn’t working to copy things.

However, I do find that Numbers easily gets temperamental and I have to repair
permissions to get it to behave itself again.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Andy,

I don’t get all the VO chatter you do because I have verbosity set to Low for
Numbers but I do have to interact with table one.

I tried with Quick Nav on and it still worked. Then I tried with the Trackpad
commander on and it still worked.

You didn’t say whether you’ve repaired permissions lately. If you have, then
maybe reinitialising the PRAM will help.

Cheers,

Re: How can I stop streadsheets opening in Numbers at the top cell all the time?

2014-08-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

You should repair permissions after installing new software and after updates.

People who only use their Macs for simple tasks can get away with not repairing
permissions, but as soon as you start using more complex programs such as
Numbers, you’re going to encounter anomalous behaviour just as you have already
done.

I’ve been a Mac user now for 18 years so I do have some idea what I’m talking
about.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: How can I stop streadsheets opening in Numbers at the top cell all the time?

2014-08-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Eleanor,

To repair permissions:
• Open your Utilities folder (Cmd-Shift-u);
• Type dis to get quickly to Disk Utility and open it (Cmd-o);
• Interact with the table and navigate down to your hard drive (probably the
second item in the list);
• Stop interacting and navigate twice to the right to make sure that First Aid
is selected;
• Navigate straight down as far as Repair disk permissions and press VO-Space:
• You can follow progress by navigating up to the Results table and interacting
with it;
• When the repair is complete, it will say “Permissions repair complete” at the
bottom of the Results table;
• Quit Disk utility.

There will always be a few things to repair. I usually find about 7 lines in
the table, but I’ve seen computers with thousands of lines of repairs!

Cheers,

Anne

Re: How can I stop streadsheets opening in Numbers at the top cell all the time?

2014-08-16 Thread Andy Collins
Hi Anne -

I’ve always respected your knowledge and experience, right from first coming to
the mac and this list just over 12 months ago. Like I said, the only reason I
haven’t done repairs etc was from fear of messing something up. Now a feel more
confident with my mac, I am more brave about doing things.

I am as you commented, a lite user of the Mac, in so much as what I do is
pretty basic and strait forward, even my spreadsheets are just basic house
keeping these days.

However, I did upgrade to Mavericks a couple of weeks ago, so maybe now is a
good time to look at repairing permissions -

Andy
