Re: KNFB Reader Does it work on the iPad?

2014-09-24 Thread Eleanor Martha Burke
Hi Bryan and All, I could not find the option to download KNFB on to my iPad
Mini first Generation. However, I did install to my iPod Touch 5th
Generation and can report exactly what you found below to the letter!!! The
lag was so dreadful I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it is now doable.
There is no vibration on the iPad or the iPad Mini or the iPod Touch so that
is why you cannot get it!!! I can just find the 'take picture' button and
double tap and then the OCR is fine and the reading is accurate. Like
yourself the app works great on my iPhone 5s and 5c. Excellent app, very
pleased indeed with it.

Hello Martin,

Here is a brief summary of my experience attempting to install and use the
KNFB Reader app on my iPad. YMMV, and I am by no means recommending that
anyone attempt to install and run this app on an unsupported device.

Having already purchased, installed & fallen in love with the KNFB Reader
app on my iPhone 5S running IOS 7.1.2, I decided to ignore the stated
system requirements and install it on my WiFi iPad Mini retina running IOS
8.

The app showed up as installable (already paid for) in the App Store on the
iPad, and I had no issues with the installation process on the iPad.

The first thing I noticed after installation is that there is a pronounced
lag when navigating the app’s interface on my iPad. There is a delay of
several seconds when swiping or touching from item to item. For testing
purposes, I ignored this lag and took several pictures of a computer screen
and a printed text document, both of which were OCR’d and read aloud
quickly.

I attempted to toggle on “tilt guidance” but it remained off, which led me
to wonder if perhaps there is no vibration built into the iPad. I’m not
sure. I also tried the “field of view report” a half-dozen times but managed
to receive spoken feedback with the edge and clockface report just once. I
did not attempt to dig further into any of the settings or options, nor did
I attempt any sort of troubleshooting.

That was the extent of my testing. I am very happy with the performance of
this app on my iPhone, and I imagine the Devs have some good technical
reasons for leaving the current crop of iPads out of the supported device
list.

HTH,
Bryan

I certainly will. Assuming the app will install and run
on the IPad, there are logistical issues. The rear-facing camera
is in one corner of the bottom. It will need to be suspended
over the middle of the reading area plus one will need a light
source to aluminate it. I like to build things so this would be
a good project. Modern LED lights are now available for the
automotive industry so maybe I could find some white ones that
would mount on a pannel.
LED lights are relatively cool and don't require
anywhere near as much current as do conventional incandescent
lamps. They would also probably be easier to keep out of the
direct view of the camera.

Hello, I think to be fair it would install on an iPad, as it is running apples
operating system.
I don't know that what results we'd get using an iPad, but by all means try it?
I think it's primarily designed for those using an iPhone. It's more portable.
Let me know how you get on.
