You will need to turn on "grid" after that you go in the options when you go
into camera.
I noticed mine starting to do this after I did that.

I'd love to know how to do this. I tried but it wouldn't work. it'd
certainly make taking pictures a good deal easier.

Interesting. Tried the facial thing on my 4s,
and it's pretty amazing. Don't know about the iPhone 4 with iOS 5, though.

Re: VO helping me center a face in my iPhone's viewfinder

2011-12-18 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Shaun and others,

This morning when I read the messages of folks having trouble getting this to
work I tried doing a self-portrait again and, much to my surprise, I could not
get VO to speak the facial thing again. I was pretty sure my face didn't go
away overnight, so I thought maybe the issue was related to lighting or
background color or my untrimmed eyebrows getting in the way, but altering all
of these variables made no difference. I still could not get VO to talk about
my face.

Turning to my usual first standard troubleshooting procedure, I cleared all
apps from my app switcher as I had launched about a dozen apps since
yesterday's successful facial recognition. I then re-launched the camera app,
held the phone at arms length with the rear facing camera aimed at the spot
just above the top of my torso where my face was yesterday, and voila! VO
immediately started telling me I had a small face in my viewfinder. I was then
able to do all the tilting and stuff I did yesterday and it all worked fine
again. Unfortunately, VO still doesn't seem to consider my dog's face to be a
real face, and the cat is nowhere to be found this morning :-(

For the record, I am using an iPhone 4 running the latest version of IOS 5.

HTH,
Bryan

Re: VO helping me center a face in my iPhone's viewfinder

2011-12-18 Thread Thejazzden
Hello everyone.
it does work. Using an IPhone 4 here. I'm totally blind so while it was fairly
easy to learn where to stand and how to point the camera, you need to angle or
tilt the phone to take into account the subject's height and their position in
the photo frame. I was lucky to hav a sighted helper and you need to practise,
as with any skill. Sometimes VoiceOver says 'small face' when it isn't which
makes you think you've still not got the positioningg right . But it is useable.
While Guided Photo I think gives a little more direction I found it much
slower, but that was using the IPhone 3GS.
One last point. I found taking a photo of myself with the front camera was a
good way of mlearning how to hold the phone still. Usingthe volume up button
with the phone locked rather than double tapping 'take picture' really does
help too for getting a steady shot.
Hth.
Dennis.

2011-12-18 Thread Lewis Alexander
this technology exists in iphoto where the face is recognized and with input
from the user, the face can be identified as a name. with a little tinkering
with the phone camera software, I don't see why with a reference target, the
face can be identified and spoken by name, etc even to the extent of adding a
contact link to refer to the address book / contacts list.

I'd love to know how to do this. I tried but it wouldn't work. it'd
certainly make taking pictures a good deal easier.

I can't get it to work either. It says autofocus but that's about it.

"face centered." Then I moved the camera closer to my face and VO announced, "One face, large face,

I then switched cameras to the front camera and got the same results. I also
tried this in video mode but VO was silent.

Lastly, I tried aiming the back facing camera at my Black Lab's face but could
not get VO to recognize her. The cat decided she didn't want to be part of this
experiment and ran off somewhere.

I wonder what other IOS accessibility marvels I'm missing.

Cheers,
Bryan

VO helping me center a face in my iPhone's viewfinder

2011-12-17 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Folks,

I imagine most of you already know about this feature, but I don't recall
knowing about it until this afternoon when I stumbled upon it completely by
accident. I think this is pretty darn cool.

I was lying on the floor with the dog snoring against my left side and the cat
purring against my right, so I thought I'd hold the iPhone camera at arm's
length and try to snap a photo. I launched the native camera app on my iphone 4
running IOS 5, put it in photo mode with auto flash and back-facing camera,
held it straight in front of me with the back-facing lens aimed in the general
direction of my face, and prepared to snap one of my standard off-center photos.

. Next thing I knew, VO started saying," One face, small face, near top edge."
I tilted the iPhone a bit and VO announced, "One face, small face, near left
edge. I kept tilting the phone until VO announce, "face centered." Then I moved
the camera closer to my face and VO announced, "One face, large face, face
centered."

Cheers,
Bryan
