You could turn speech off with a three finger double tap and when you're finished a call you can turn speech back on with the same gesture. That's because your focused on the call time counter. Just take your finger and flick right to swipe away from it after laying the phone down. That should keep it from continuously reading. I just return off speech as I know the interface well enough to use it. but as chris said you can also flick away or place the curser on the end button which in the loser left hand corner of the screen.
