Re: accessible ftp client

2012-11-05 Thread Esther
Hi Amy,

If you only have occasional need for FTP, and the primary requirement is free,
you can try Cyberduck, but get it from the MacUpdate site instead of the Mac
App Store. Otherwise, Transmit is the application of choice, and well worth
the $34 for the range of capabilities and speed. (Cyberduck is $24 through the
Mac App Store.) It's also possible to use the built-in support for FTP via
the Terminal command line. Here's the link to the MacUpdate site for Cyberduck:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/8392/cyberduck

This was traditionally free, but they recently moved to a paid model in order
to keep up with development costs. I believe that the free version from
MacUpdate still works, but I don't use this myself.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Cyberduck [was Re: accessible FTP client]

2011-12-17 Thread Esther
Hi Paula,

I agree that Transmit is worth it, but if you want a free FTP client that is
accessible, a number of people use Cyberduck. I'll point you to the download
link at the MacUpdate site, since the version at the Mac App store cost $23.99:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/8392/cyberduck
It's also possible to just use the Terminal app, and type in command line
instructions to perform FTP and SFTP operations, but you probably won't want to
do that.

Incidentally, an alternative accessible and free thesaurus software application
for Mac OS X that you can use is Nisus Thesaurus:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nisus-thesaurus/id471448642?mt=12

This is from the developers of Nisus Writer Pro, an accessible word processor.
To use this software, highlight the word that you want to look up, e.g., by
holding down the Shift key when you are positioned at the start of a word and
then pressing Option+right arrow to select the word. Then either use the
shortcut to look up the word in Nisus Thesaurus, which is Command+<, or else
navigate to the app on the menu bar with Control+F2 or VO-M, arrow right to
the application menu, then arrow down and press "s" to go to the Services
option. Right arrow to the Services submenu and navigate to "Look up selection
in Thesaurus", which will be listed with the shortcut assignment of Command+<.
Either press return to bring up the Thesaurus window for the highlighted word,
or use the Command+< shortcut. You can press escape to dismiss the Thesaurus
window. The shortcut or the service menu entry for "Look up selection in
Thesaurus" will not show up unless you have first selected a wo
rd. This works in all the regular applications such as TextEdit, Mail, etc.

Welcome to the list.

I had a look at transmit. All I want 2 be able to do is get some material off
an ftp site. It's probably a little too expensive for the small amount that I
need to be able to do with it.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Take care
