I was under the impression that the recommendation to install X11 was just
a recommendation, and not actually a requirement... The section does not
actually say that installing X11 is a requirement to use MacPorts, it just
says that it is highly recommended for many MacPorts apps. Although I
suppose that could be clarified some...

I don't even recommend it. If you need the X11 app, install it using MacPorts
(sudo port install xorg-server).

Oops, did not see this before updating in
https://trac.macports.org/wiki/InstallingMacPorts?action=diffversion=74 ...
anyways, the directions on how to install it with MacPorts are under there,
too, but that is just one way to do it. While it might be better to install
it with MacPorts, the user should at least know how it has traditionally
been done and why we now recommend installing it with MacPorts so that they
can have all the information to properly evaluate whether they want to do
things the old way or the new way.

As Jeremy said, the links were all broken and there is no way, that I can find,
to directly link to a specific version of Xcode. You have to login first and
then search. Sorry for forgetting to put in a descriptive comment about the
change. So for now, I just kept the generic link to the Xcode Developers page
where all versions can be downloaded. Honestly that whole page is outdated
though.

Yup, it’s just a re-hash of their old connect.apple.com code. The links are
still there but needlessly obfuscated. Must be for iOS or something :-P

Ah yes, their page is being all clever and JavaScripty, but I managed to coax
the URLs out of it, and put them back in the page.

Not on OS X. That should probably be the default on other platforms though.

Surely MacPorts itself doesn't require any part of X11?
