Disk first aid shows the disk is ok.

Ryan, so what was the problem? Vincent

I’d say that before you stumble on a problem generally everything works fine. :P That being said, there was a hack listed somewhere in the messages that consisted of booting single user and touching a driver. Did you try that? It can’t do any harm to try and test. Vincent

It certainly does look like that! I see some search results on Google from people encountering this problem trying to install macOS on Hackintoshes with various graphics cards, but we're running on Apple hardware with an Apple-provided graphics card. Granted we're running VMware ESXi on it and the VMs are seeing VMware's emulated graphics card, but everything was working before it unaccountably blew up. I'm guessing that might have the side effect of rebuilding the boot caches. If that doesn't help, what specific suggestions from that thread were you advocating?

It got itself into a very strange state I've never seen before. Because no more filehandles were available, no program could run, because they could not open the basic system dylibs they required. The GUI failed, and not even the sudo command worked, so I could not shut it down cleanly and had to power it off. Booting from the High Sierra install disk, Disk Utility's first aid reports that the main disk is ok. It does not seem to boot up correctly now. The black startup screen with white Apple logo and progress bar filled all the way in never disappears. I'm not certain if all the usual services have started up correctly. I can ssh in. I deactivated all the ports that had been left active. Many ports' files were still present and had to be removed by forcibly activating and then deactivating the ports. I think I got them all. I will need to do some further investigating.
