I found the problem .. a silly/sloppy mistake on my part.

A couple of years back I had played with a local copy of GraphicsMagick
(~/ports/graphics/GraphicsMagick). Once I deleted that and ran a selfupdate
all is as it should be.

selfupdate via http?

2009-10-13 Thread Ben Abbott
I was under the impression that I could selfupdate via http by
changing my sources.conf as seen below.

$ cat /opt/local/etc/macports/sources.conf
# MacPorts system wide sources configuration file
# $Id: sources.conf 42662 2008-11-28 23:18:50Z rai...@macports.org $

# To setup a local ports repository, insert a file:// entry
following

# the example below that points to your local ports directory:
# Example: file:///Users/landonf/misc/MacPorts/ports

# The default MacPorts repository should always be tagged [default]
# for proper functionality of various resources (port groups, mirror
# sites, etc). If you switch it from the rsync:// URL, be sure to
keep

# it tagged [default].

# To prevent a source from synchronizing when `port sync` is used,
# append [nosync] at the end as shown in this example:
# Example: file:///Users/landonf/misc/MacPorts/ports [nosync]

# NOTE: The port command parses source URLs in order and installs the
#first occurrance when a port appears in multiple
repositories.

#So keep file:// URLs above other URL types.

# To get the ports tree from the master MacPorts server in
California, USA use:

# rsync://rsync.macports.org/release/ports/
# To get it from the mirror in Trondheim, Norway use:
# rsync://trd.no.rsync.macports.org/release/ports/

http://trac.macports.org/wiki/Mirrors

# rsync://rsync.macports.org/release/ports/ [default]
http://www.macports.org/files/ports.tar.gz [default]

While the change to http (from rsync) allows me to update the port

No, this only affects ports. Hence the word ports in the URL.

You can download the MacPorts 1.8.1 source via http from the
downloads area and compile it yourself. Or you can download the
1.8.1 disk image and install that; it will not adversely affect your
installed ports or settings.

Ryan, assuming I decide to download new version, where should the
sources be placed and how to I initiate the compilation ... if it is
more complicated than placing the tar-ball in the appropriate location
and issuing sudo port selfupdate or a similar simple command, just
say the word and I'll go with the diskimage.

I noticed that dvips is being called as ...

/opt/local/bin/dvips -R -Poutline -o
/tmp/altpdfsimpdftex.9268-1246672724/-n tex.ps tex

The -n does not belong there. Meaning it should look like

/opt/local/bin/dvips -R -Poutline -o
/tmp/altpdfsimpdftex.9268-1246672724/tex.ps tex

In any event, this looks like a problem with TeXShop. Does anyone else see
this?

Re: TeXLive TeXShop with Tex+DVI

2009-07-04 Thread Ben Abbott

If I try what TeXShop does from the command line ...

$ simpdftex latex --maxpfb my_file.tex
### This is /opt/local/bin/simpdftex, Version $Revision: 2.18 $
### Skipping simpdftex [dvi-pdf only]
### /opt/local/bin/dvips -R -Poutline -o /tmp/altpdfsimpdftex.
37498-1246716520/-n latex.ps latex
This is dvips(k) 5.96 Copyright 2005 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com
)

/opt/local/bin/dvips: ! DVI file can't be opened.
### FAILED to generate /tmp/altpdfsimpdftex.37498-1246716520/-n
latex.ps ()

I checked the syntax for simpdftex and it appears that it is being
called correctly ... for some reason simpdftex appears to skip the
creation of the dvi file.

However, latex + dvipdf works correctly.

$ latex my_file.tex;dvipdf my_file.dvi

But then I I'm not able to make use of TeXShop's editor / previewer.

Thoughts?

Ben

p.s. I'm not using pdflatex because I'm including eps files via psfrag.

Could you try running latex directly (from a terminal) and check if it
produces a dvi file. If it produces pdf, you can try using the

latex to produce pdf instead of dvi.

/usr/texbin/pdflatex does not exist. Perhaps TeXLive was not
installed or was removed during a system upgrade. If so, go to the
TeXShop web site and follow the instructions to (re)install
TeXLive. Another possibility is that a tool path is incorrectly
configured in TeXShop preferences. This can happen if you are using
the fink teTeX distribution.

I changed the path to indicate /opt/local/bin, and then I get ...

I need psfrag for my document so pdftex will not work for me.

Any solution and/or suggestion would be appreciated.
