This is a refreshing change. You are absolutely correct. My head got
twisted by the frustration.

I apologize for the fruitless excursion.

Speaking from the cheap seats, there is no point in carrying on a long
discussion about Apple policies on a non-Apple list. There are no doubt people
who fall on all sides of this issue, but this isn't the forum to do that.

Please take this part of the discussion to @macports-flame, and if you think
you have a legitimate complaint against Apple, they have various avenues open
for that delivery.

Dear Jeremy,

Is your explanation for Apple publishing applications with known
bugs that I'm a troll?

The `obsolete OS' excuse for that kind of action is completely
unethical. I'm just a very old coder, not a troll, and not accepting of
profits at any social cost. Putting broken stuff out for an unsuspecting
public IS unethical!

So the OS is obsolete. Presenting bugs in the available downloads
is, let me repeat, unethical. Apple has a moral responsibility not to
publish buggy code and applications.

Modern for it's own sake is the way down the rabbit hole to Alice's
land, or possibly it is Alice who gave us Lion. There is no Leopard or
Lion for this iBook, but it still works fine, except when the Apple
maintained bugs bite.

Re: clamav and bzip2

2012-02-23 Thread John Brown

Dear Daniel,

The clamav source configure script found that error still embedded
in the compiler from an Xcode dmg I downloaded yesterday from the Apple
developer site. Doesn't Apple check for known bugs in their download
packages? The macports clamav made no such complaint. Exactly how does
the most recent code from CLAM detect the presence of a known and
resolved compiler bug and the macports version of clamav does not???
Possibly that bug is my slowdown with the macports clamscan.

If you think bugs in compilers are acceptable, that would be a
unique developer approach. This is not a clam source code problem! They
at the least fix all the bugs detected in their code and detect the
known bugs in stuff their code uses. For instance, bzip2, gcc, etc.

After a long download and a short installation the result is the

   This is my machine.

From:
http://guide.macports.org/#installing.xcode

Always make sure to install the latest available version of Xcode for your Mac
OS X release (with the exception of Xcode 4.3, for now); using outdated
versions of Xcode may cause port install failures. Also note that Xcode is not
updated via Mac OS X's Software Update utility on OS versions prior to 10.6,
and is updated via the Mac App Store on 10.7.

You can find all Xcode downloads through connect.apple.com.

Sounds like you've been downloading web pages instead of source for packages.

Consider wiping out these downloads and trying again, and possibly getting
online through a different network.

sudo port clean --dist PACKAGES
