Re: MBP vs MBA VS...

2012-06-13 Thread Pete Nalda
I just upgraded my early 2009 model MBP to 5 gb, and can really see a change in
speed from the original 2gb ram it came with. XPlane and ableton Live load up
in a quarter of time, and I can have 4 tabs open in safari with 400mb ram free
at any given time. with the 500 gb upgrade I also did to the HD, this machine
will be good to carry me for another 3 or 4 years, even if the drive isn't an
SSD.

This will take you to a CNet download. It seems that the makers of Stanza,
Lexcycle, were bought out by Amazon in 2009, which is why it's a little tricky
to find a download link. The website seems to be nonexistent at this point, so
various download repositories have picked it up.

Re: Experiencing Mail Problems.

2012-06-13 Thread Teresa Cochran
The most reliable keystroke I use is command-VO-T to move between tables. Once
you get to a conversation in the message table, press this keystroke to go to
the message content table and interact with it. As you use VO arrows, the
messages will be read with speech. To read them in Braille you would need to
interact with each one.

Experiencing Mail Problems.

2012-06-13 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello All.

I read mail in the conversation view and interact with messages when wishing to
read a thread.

However, when I interact I'm always taken to the mailbox table rather than the
content of the messages.

This was not happening before the last update.

Has anyone had similar problems when reading mail in conversation view on the
Mac? I'm running the latest Lion update.

Thanks in advance.

Kawal.

Re: Editing part of a region in Garageband

2012-06-13 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

This is kinda tricky. You can go about this 2 ways. You can split that
section into a region and then delete it. To mute it, you would actually have
to split that section into its on region, copy it to another track, then mute
that track.

Editing part of a region in Garageband

2012-06-13 Thread Emrah
Hi guys,

I have a few questions about Garageband, if they have been asked before, I
apologize. A link to the ref would be appreciated though.

1. How do you edit parts of a track / region? Let say I want to silence beat 5
to 8?
2. How do you add silence before or after the recording?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Re: MBP vs MBA VS...

2012-06-13 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
This has not been answered so I'll give it a bash.

There is more to consider here than just processor, all the MBA's have an SSD,
solid state drive, and as such, notably out perform their native MBP units
which are fitted with traditional SATA drives. Of course it is possible to up
spec an MBP to include an SSD which removes this advantage, but, still its at
an extra cost.

RAM is the key to multi tasking, and depending on how many Applications, and
what they are, 4Gb should be enough for the majority of users. If you are doing
more heavy stuff, then you may wish for more, which immediately removes the MBA
from the question, as it is limited to 4Gb.

Quick note, this assumes you're getting not one of the very brand new MBA's
which now can be speced up to 8Gb RAM.

All in all, I don't consider the MBP worth going for on the bases of the disk
drive, unless you need one of those all the time, if you occasionally might
need one, just buy the USB Super Drive, its relatively cheap and keeps the
weight of your portable machine down.

I have an 11in MBA speced to the max, and find it more than aderquitely, in
fact, I see no lag whatsoever when its in use. I generally have Mail Safari
with 6+ tabs open, numbers, pages and text edit all on the go at the same time,
and the MBA doesn't even fire up its fan.

ask yourself what you're going to be doing with it, and how much work load that
genuinely entails…

now consider that the MBA is a notable amount lighter than the MBP and how much
that may or may not bother you.

cannot really say more than that on the topic.

Free Audiobook summer listening from SYNC YA

2012-06-13 Thread Esther
Hi All,

For those of you who like to listen to audiobooks, over the next 8 weeks (from
June 14, 2012 - August 22, 2012) the SYNC YA site will be offering two free
audiobook titles for download each week. This is a combined effort between
Audiobook Community and publishers to encourage reading among young adults, but
anyone can register for these downloads. You will need to have OverDrive Media
Console installed on your computer in order to download the audiobooks. This
is the same free software that is used by many public libraries worldwide to
support electronic downloads of audiobook content, and is very accessible in
the Mac version and, I've heard, in the Windows version of the software, too.

The schedule of downloads is listed at:
http://www.audiobooksync.com/free-syn-downloads/schedule-of-free-downloads/

There are also links to sign up for email or text message reminder alerts on
that page. About half the titles are offered with no international
restrictions, and half have some international restrictions for users outside
of the U.S. For example, in the first week, the L.A. Theatre Works production
of "Grapes of Wrath" is available without restrictions while "The Eleventh
Plague" from Scholastic Audiobooks is available to users in the U.S., Canada,
and Mexico. Again, information on the availability of titles is given both on
the download pages for individual titles, and on the summary page for "The
Non-U.S. Listener" at:
http://www.audiobooksync.com/free-syn-downloads/non-u-s-listener/

The OverDrive Media Console software is available for both your computer and as
a free app for mobile device listening:
http://www.overdrive.com/Software/omc/

Remember, you must actually download the mp3 audiobook files, and not just the
non-expiring personal use token files for the books within the week that the
books are offered. At any time after that you can transfer the files to
another device for listening.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Safari Web Page Navigation

2012-06-13 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi.

That depends if the command opens websides in different tabs. If this is the
case, I don't remember the shortcut key for switching tabs, but try ctrl tab.
I find Voiceovers window chooser easier when it comes to switching to an other
window. The shortcut key is VO f2 twice. That works all the time.

Re: odd question on mac sounds

2012-06-13 Thread Timothy Emmons
Ricardo I have tried this, just to see and Ihave noticed a definite difference.
VO is already snappy regardless of how you cut it but when you turn off those
effects, if you have other things set right, the snappiness is right there.
It's a nice contrast if you get tired of the sounds. And if you want them back
on, then by all means you can go back in and turn them on. I love having those
choices. Sorry had to chime in here and agree the snappy is definitely
noticeable when the effects are muted or turned off.

Safari Web Page Navigation

2012-06-13 Thread Emilio Hernandez
Hello everyone,

After reviewing the archives, I am still at a loss.
When opening a web page by pressing command with numbers 1-9, how can I cycle
through the open pages?
What I am trying to achieve is basically when opening a web page, cycling
through the open pages and placing focus on a particular page.
If this is not possible, what alternative exists? I'm aware of CMD-accent,
which works great with open windows.

Thank you all for your invaluable help.

Bluetooth Disconnects Spontaneously

2012-06-13 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I'm having a strange problem with my focus 40 Blue. Bluetooth disconnects,
especially after hours of not using the computer. When I go into VO Braille
settings, it just says "disconnected" and won't reconnect. Sometimes I have to
restart the computer to get the Braille display to connect.

Anyone else experience this? I have no idea whether it's a display or a
bluetooth problem.

Re: Awareness

2012-06-13 Thread Tammy

Hi,

Yes it only works with headphones otherwise what would be the point? What
it is supposed to do is make it possible for you to hear what's coming
through your headphones but also what's happening around you so the
headphones don't shut all the sound out if you have loud music playing. I
never found the app useful, but I haven't tried it in awhile.

Hello all.
I want to share with you an app that turns your iPhone into a virtual
hearing aid, Awareness. It uses your headphones and microphone to amplify
your surroundings while being able to listen to your iPhone. If you use a
headset mike the app uses the mike on that; otherwise it uses the in built
one. According to the Awareness website they do a version for Android for
those who have one. For those with an iPhone here is the link to the app.

Re: ColorVisor update to Version 1.1

2012-06-13 Thread Alex Hall
I have a quick question. I don't have this app yet, so can't test
this: how does it work in different light? For instance, will it know
my green shirt from my yellow regardless of whether I am in florecent
or incandescent light? I don't have an iPhone, and my iPod has no
flash, so I can't give it a constant light source.

Re: The thunderbolt update.

2012-06-13 Thread shamelessfangirl
Morning all,

By the time I got around to installing the updates, that one wasn't among them.
Haven't heard anything about Apple pulling it though, so to those who run
across it, proceed carefully, because by all accounts, the only way around the
errors it causes is to re-install. Was this the case for your friend Ricardo?

Take care all, and as always, thanks for responding.

Re: airdrop

2012-06-13 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hello again!
Well, in order to use both Finder Windows, The Airdrop and the files one, you
just need to change from one window to an other with Command and the key at the
wright of the letter P. In spanish keyboards is an accent, but I am not sure
which is de symbol on an english one, this is why I say where is that key.
To drag the files do this:
1. Open Airdrop on Finder and let it find the Airdrops in range.
2. Open the Finder window where you have the file you want to transfer and
select the file.
3. Make a Vo coma on that file.
4. press Command + the key next to the letter p and you will be brought back to
your airdrop window.
5. Interact with the airdrop until you here the name of the destination
computer and then press Vo period to drop the file.
With this, you will here the dragging sound and then the send dialog will
appear to ask if you want to send that file. You hit Send and there you go.
I hope that I am more clear on this, and feel free to ask if that is not the
case.
Cheers!

1. Press VO+F8 to enter Voice Over Utilities.

2. From there, navigate to the "Vebocity" item in the main table.

3. Now, navigate to the hints tab and press VO+space on it. YOu want to
uncheck the firs item there.

HTH.

PS. You might also want to look at changing some of the other items there to
better suit you.

Re: airdrop

2012-06-13 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Daniela Rubio,

Thank you for the explanation of airdrop. I've seen this come by a number of
times, but there is one important aspect that never became clear to me. I hope
you can explain a little more about it.

Here's what I do, and where I go wrong.
1. I open airdrop on both Lion macs.
2. On the source mac, from where I want to send files, I look in the grid by
interacting with it, and I find the other, destination mac.
3. Now, I need to drag files over to it, and there is a problem. In order for a
drag and drop to work, you must have both the file window from which you are
dragging, as well as the airdrop window into which you are dropping, open on
the source mac, simultaneously. How do I do that?

In finder, as far as I understand it now, you have a sidebar on the left, and a
main area on the right. When viewing a folder full of files, the window on the
right is taken up by the files. When you start airdrop by hitting command shift
r, this area is instead taken up by the airdrop window. Is this a misconception
of mine? How can you have both airdrop and a finder window with files open at
the same time?

Paul.

I've never tried playing with the app without headphones, but there's a
notification that comes up when headphones aren't present. One idea I have for
folks using this as a hearing aid, is to be mindful of feedback if you have the
audio or mic volume too high.

Hello Chris.

When Awareness first came out, Mark Taylor did a podcast and interviewed the
Developer as he did not know that this App would benefit the low vision
community as there was no support for Boice Over but it was done once Mark had
interviewed him so all credit to Mark for making the developer aware.
