Re: a good CD ripper?

2012-07-17 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi,

firstly: iTunes can ripp directly to mp3. Check the import settings and make
your choices of the format etc.

secondly: When you highlight tracks in iTunes, press CMD + i to open the
information window. There you can rename chosen tracks. Afterwards it's also
renamed in your library.

I don't know of a real good CD ripper but you could try Max.

All the best

Just FYI, this is a really old version of Audacity. v2.x is out. No clue about

Hello Andrew, very useful information for us Lion users. Thank you for
sharing.
Just as a side note. It might be good if you could send an email to Apple's
accessibility address so they know about this problem.

 Dear listers,

I thought I'd post my experience of partitioning an external usb drive
under mac os Lion in case somebody else needed to do this in the
 future.

I've bought a 1 TB external hard drive, and I wanted to partition it
so that it has two different volumes. This is how I accomplished it in
 Mac OS Lion.

I connected my USB drive to my mac.
 1. Open Disk Utility (from the finder, shortcut key, command+shift+u),
and then start typing disk utility to get there.

 2. In the table of all available disks, find the disk you wish to
partition.

 3. Stop interacting with the table of your disks and move to the right
through the available tabs until you've reached partition tab. Press
 vo+space to select it.

 4. Move right to hear partition layout popup button. Here yo you can
choose how many partitions you wish to have on your drive. In my case,
 I chose two partitions.

 5. Move to the right. You will encounter a field that Voiceover
reports as something like name text field. At this stage this field
will be reported as dimmed which means that you cannot do anything
 with it.

 6. Move to the right and yo you will hear scroll area. This is where
it gets interesting. Remember, I chose to partition my external drive
 into two.

 7. Interact with the scroll area. You will be able to navigate with
vo+arrow keys here, and you will hear: untitled1 plus some info about
the value of the default size of the partition and if you move right,
you will hear horizontal splitter and then, untitled2 with the
value of the default size of the partition. At this point, you can't
do anything with these areas. However, in order to be able to name
your partitions, you have to do the following steps.

 8. While still interacting with the scroll area, place your Voiceover
cursor on the first untitled area. If you have a mac that has a
trackpad which by default is enabled with Voiceover, first disabled
the trackpad commander with vo + rotor left. Voiceover will say
trackpad commander off. Then bring your ouse cursor to the Voiceover
cursor with vo+command+f5. Confirm with vo+f5 that you are on the
untitled1 field and then physically click the mouse/trackpad.

 9. At this point, Disk Utility got busy for me and I had to force quit
it. To avoid this, after you had physically clicked the mouse pad,
turn Voiceover off and then on again (don't rush the process), and
then stop interacting with the scroll area and move left to the name
 text field.

 10. You will notice, that now Voiceover announces name text field as
untitled1 and it is not dimmed so that yo you can enter the name of
 your volume here.

 11. After you are done with this partition, interact with the scroll
area again, only this time move to the untitled2 and perform the
same actions here as you had done with untitled1'. Then again, as
soon as you physically click the trackpad, turn Voiceover off, and
then turn it on again, and then stop interacting with the scroll area
and move to the left to the name field where you can now enter the
 name of your second volume.

I hope this will help some people on the list who have been struggling
 to partition their external drives.

 With best regards

 Andrew

Re: ogg to mp3 converter

2012-07-17 Thread Chris Blouch
You can just use iTunes to convert your ogg files but you have to
install an ogg QuickTime plugin like this one:

http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/download.html

Unfortunately they haven't updated it in a while so if you're running a
64-bit OS you'll have to get info on iTunes and check the Open in
32-bit mode box. After that you should be able to keep ogg files in
your iTunes library just like anything else. That also means you can use
iTunes to convert the ogg file to another format.

help with ripping ddvds to external hard drive and playing them on itunes

2012-07-17 Thread jason lefevers
Hi ok I really need some assistance i am getting in over my head with this
stuff. so here is my situation I have a external harddrive that is hooked to my
arrport extreme so I can access the content on my MBP. what I am trying to do
is use rip it to rip my dvd collection and have it saved on my external HD I
also want to be able to use Itunes on my MBP to play these movies .

What I have been able to do so far is : I had ripped 3 movies previously to my
Itunes library on my MBP and was able to play them just fine. searched on the
web for how to move them to external HD , what I did was copy the movies folder
from Itunes and pasted it on the external HD then went back and deleated the
folder on my MBP . after this I could go to Itunes and if i went to play a
movie it would say it could not located it and it would give you the option to
find it , so I found it and could play it then from my ex HD but I would have
to do that search every time . The way I read to solve this was to in Itunes
delete the movies from the library since they were not linked to anything
anymore. then with my wifes help opened opened the ex HD and dragged the movies
folder while holding the option key and dropping it on the main Itunes window .
the movies showed up and when I clicked on a movie it would play just fine and
would be playing from the ex HD. so this was great , now the problem I have now
is adding to that library. I changed the settings on ripit so when I rip a dvd
it is saved in the movies folder on my external HD that I copied from my MBP .
I was able to do this , however It doesn't seem to save it in the same format
as the other previously ripped dvds and I am unable to get it to show up in my
Itunes movies library on my MBP with the other movies . I can access the movie
by opening my HD and selecting it and it will start playing using the dvd
player which I guess is fine but this is not what I want to do . I am really
trying to get it so I can use my apple tv to play movies stored on my externial
HD . I know I can't do this directly I have to access the movies from the
Itunes library on my MBP using my apple tv.

sorry for the very long post If anyone has any ideas or is very good with
Itunes stuff and external harddrives I could really use some help. thanks
alot Jason

PS I am using lion with a late 2011 MBP .

Re: help with ripping ddvds to external hard drive and playing them on itunes

2012-07-17 Thread Chris Blouch
Sounds like you're really close. I suspect you aren't doing the compress
option on Ripit. The default for Ripit is to make an exact copy of the
entire DVD onto your storage device which can then be played by DVD
Player, since it's just a virtual DVD at that point. If you do the
Compress button instead it will convert the rip to whatever you chose in
the preferences. I suspect for your case you chose AppleTV since that's
your eventual playback platform. I haven't played with this as much
since I just have a MacMini hooked up to the TV and use DVDPlayer to
play the videos.

help needed pls with restoring a bootcamp partition

I have a image of my bootcamp partition from my old macbook and I would like to
put this beck on a new partition on my mba.

I do the following:
I go to the image and chose open with (disk utility).
Then, the img-file seems to be in the source-tablenon the tab control restore.
Then, the next step I should do is to select the destination partition.
This last step seems inaccessible at this moment for me.
They say I have to drag the artition from the left column to the destination
field but, it seems I can't do this with voiceover (drag and drop seems not to
work :( )

So:
Should I restore my bootcamp-partition with disc utility or a noter program?
and, If I should use disc utility, how can I do it on a accessible way?

Thx alot for the answers,

 Hello,
Since I have me new macbook air, I would like to copy my bootcamp partition
with windows7 from my macbook to my air.
I have a image of my bootcamp partition from my old macbook and I would like
to put this beck on a new partition on my mba.

 I do the following:
I go to the image and chose open with (disk utility).
Then, the img-file seems to be in the source-tablenon the tab control restore.
Then, the next step I should do is to select the destination partition.
This last step seems inaccessible at this moment for me.
They say I have to drag the artition from the left column to the destination
field but, it seems I can't do this with voiceover (drag and drop seems not
 to work :( )

 So:
Should I restore my bootcamp-partition with disc utility or a noter program?
and, If I should use disc utility, how can I do it on a accessible way?

Thx in advance for your answer,

 kind regards,
 William Windels
