Re: Apple pulls Airport routers, possible refresh coming

2016-05-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Limited in which respect? I've not experienced these sorts of crashes that
you're speaking of and had much more reliable and better performance than many
other products. Have also set numerous ones up in schools where classes of
students were accessing them without issue and with reasonable performance.
Interesting that people have differing experiences with similar units.

Also, I go to "for you" and only can find one item.
I assume I'll figure it out eventually, but in the meantime, does anyone have

Re: AirPort Firmware 7.6.7/7.7.7 Released

2016-05-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Simon,

You could test this scenario with your Express. Use the same instructions I
suggested for the Extreme configuration. If it behaves properly, you'd then
know if it would work with the Extreme.

Hi Simon,

Yes, for sure, the Extreme can be set to Bridge mode. Setting it to Bridge
mode turns off all DHCP and NAT services so that those can be provided by your
ISP. The setting for this is under the Network pane of the Airport Utility.
The Router mode pop-up menu allows you to choose DHCP & NAT, DHCP Only or Off
(Bridge Mode). Normally, just make sure you maintain the wired connection and
give the Extreme the same SSID as your main router. This should create a
Roaming kind of configuration where your devices just connect to the closest
AP, as long as your ISP's router thing doesn't block this sort of set up.

Hi,

The Airport Extreme as opposed to the Express is a much more powerful router.
Considerably better coverage, better processor for better performance and just
an all around better unit. Of course, it's about twice the cost as the Express
though, but I'd put it up against any $50 router anytime to have it out perform
those units. The one drawback is that the Extreme cannot double as an AirPlay
device like the Express does. You could, though, turn off the broadcast
portion of the Express, connect it to the network and use the AirPlay feature
without the slow-down in network performance.

Only 300 Mb/s, eh? You lucky sod. I can about get 68 down, 18 up. I’m not
unhappy with that, particularly given that I have such a wonderful ISP, but my
wouldn’t I give for a proper FTTP rollout. Perhaps if our neoliberal
government spent less time navel-gazing about the UK’s laughable position in
the digital economy and completely unachievable milestones and more building
high-quality public infrastructure, 300 Mb/s would be entirely achievable.
Perhaps g.fast? Anyway, AirPort Express would be fine for such a connection,
if not for the lack of AC and the generally much slower performance.

Yeah, you can use AirPort as a bridge, if you want. I do this. Recommended
for PPPoE users with baby jumbo support, i.e. most UK ISPs. With a product
like the Draytek v130, it’s no longer an absolute necessity to use a (V)DSL
modem where the modem is also the router. Hence, I’ve got three devices in my
setup: the Draytek v130, a Mac Mini as my router (running Linux), and the Time
Capsule providing the Wi-Fi. People who are less insane than myself may wish
to explore other scenarios, but be aware that native IPv6 does not work with
current AirPort firmware and PPPoE.

Re: Apple pulls Airport routers, possible refresh coming

2016-05-28 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Well I hope it’s not that they’re leaving the market, that’s for sure. I only
recently had the dubious honour of setting up a Netgear Wi-Fi extender, and
wish it had been an AirPort. A new one is not off the cards for me.

It’s not an empty library or an ad for Apple Music, is it? You might have to
dismiss that.

But definitely, once you’re in a list of your stuff, you should find the

Re: State of PDF accessibility?

2016-05-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

Does either PDF Pen products take advantage of PDF tags?

This can generally be determined
1. Graphics get labeled.
2. Headings are recognised just as on the web.
3. Artefacts are not read.

That third item would be a bit harder to tell, but with tagging of the PDF
artefacts are ruler lines or other visual items on the page that don't add to
the content. I believe titles and page numbers in headers are supposed to be
tagged as artefacts.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: renaming photos again

2016-05-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
It is possible to set both description and name using AppleScript.

Not sure if that would be any help though

I could also get the file path of the photograph from AppleScript, so perhaps
we could figure out how to sent the photo to Microsoft's AI engine and then
read back the description. I have never scripted for Safari or HTML/XML .

.

Hi,

It sounds like you have everything set correctly. The difference at the
moment, is that I have my Music app showing my iTunes in the Cloud purchases.
That shouldn't really make a difference, but I'll test things some a little
later and get back to you.

First off, you hit the nail dead on the head with describing all these
 things. Great job!

That said, I'm honestly not in the least bit meaning this to be rude, so
don't take it as such, but Anders, why in the first place do you feel you
need a VPN? I'm not doubting you in the least, but most people who are
either setting up their own VPN server, or are going through a VPN
provider generally know what these terms mean. I'm not saying that you
don't need a VPN, please know that up front. I'm only trying to ascertain
the general reason. You don't have to go into the nitty gritty specifics,
but is it work related, or what? I ask as again, you might not even need
a VPN. Most people who get them do so for an extremely specific reason.

 Hi,

A VPN is virtual Private network,

It is like a tunnel that connects your computer securely to your home
network or more commonly to your work place network through secure
 protocols

PPTP is a transmition protocol which is used in some VPN connections, it's
a more common protocol and if I remember correctly it's widely used in
widnows vpn systems as Microsoft have a lot to do with it,

 There is also
 L2TP,
SSH, secure shell, probably another more common one now,
 SSTP, secure socket transfer protocol,
The later is probably the one I'd look at if I was setting up my own VPN
as it requires a certificate as well as log in creds,

There are a number of others but it really depends on what your looking
for and how much your willing to pay.

 Hi!
There’s a Vpn service in Sweden called Bahnhoff that can give me Pptp or
vpn for a very low price.
However what is the difference between a vpn and pptp.
Is there less security in the later or is it the same as a vpn?
 Thanks.

Re: AirPort Firmware 7.6.7/7.7.7 Released

2016-05-28 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu

Re: exporting quicktime movie

2016-05-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The first three options are HD versions of the movie and are meant for larger
screens. The iPod, iPad, Apple TV version is meant for smaller screens
although the Apple TV does transfer well to big screen TV's. The iTunes
version will make it an m4v which is the usual format for iTunes video content.
QuickTime usually creates a .mov format movie which is usable by some video
players on non-Apple products. Also, know that there is QuickTime for Windows
for viewing this format of video content. You may also like to know that there
are direct to FaceBook and direct to YouTube features in QuickTime found under
the Share menu. You'll just need to sign into your FaceBook or YouTube account
in order that it may share directly to those accounts.

HTH.

Yep, Tim has it right. The trick is the categories selector. Home Sharing
will appear only when there is a Home Sharing iTunes library, i.e. iTunes is
running and Home Sharing was switched on.

Now, if Apple would allow the download of material to an iOS device from a home
share, that would make it all worthwhile. But alas …

Re: Home Sharing

2016-05-28 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but why would anyone want to do this? I
mean, if the music on your Mac and your phone are the same, why not just
homeshare from your Mac?
Cheers,

Re: Home Sharing

2016-05-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Figured it out. It's not a bug, nor a blocked port issue. They've just
changed the way it's accessed. If Home Sharing is set up correctly on your
computer and iDevice, then using your iPhone, go to the My Music tab, move your
finger to the top of the screen where VO announces "My Account". Swipe right a
number of times until you hear VO announce "Category, Songs, button".
Double-tap on this button then swipe right until you hear Home Sharing.
Double-tap on it then select the iTunes Library you wish to stream content
from. The Category button is kind of centred on the screen closer to the top
after the Recently Added section. It's not particularly intuitive since you
need to swipe past some songs before you can find it. Once you locate it
though, you're good to go.

Re: AirPort Firmware 7.6.7/7.7.7 Released

2016-05-28 Thread Tim Kilburn

Simon, you don’t get that much more than 100 over N. You can but it’s not the

Apple pulls Airport routers, possible refresh coming

2016-05-28 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Just FYI, don't buy an Airport router right now. Apple pulled them from its
retail and online stores yesterday, and with WWDC just a couple weeks away, the
chances are high that this indicates a refresh. The below article also notes
that it could be due to changing regulations, but even if that's the case,
Apple will have to update the routers to comply with said regulations, or get
out of the router market. If you're looking into an Airport, hold off until
WWDC, I'd say.

Multiconvert

2016-05-28 Thread Ben J. Bloomgren

Hi all,

Back in the day, I used to use a very sweet app called Multiconvert. It
converted just about everything. It rivaled
http://www.onlineconversion.com if that tells you anything. Well, as far
as I can tell, that app has been deprecated and isn't available anymore.
What do you use for conversions, such as currencies, mass, weight, force

Yeah, I’m not getting gigabit,

As for getting a new router, yeah that’s a great Idea however the provider
isn’t happy about using a router that is not supported by them, guess they
don’t have control over it and can’t block things like they currently can.

I’m looking at changing currently to another provider

So, if you have true gigabit to your home and you’re only getting 300 megabits
or so you either have a fractional gigabit like 300 megabits which is possible
or you have a choke point which is probable. Definitely clear the 100 megabit
blockage and make that gigabit. Also, your router may not be able to forward

Well, it looks from reports like many of the changes were overdue bug fixes: an
issue with DHCPv6 and Cox, and an issue with clients being separated from one
another which broke AirPlay. Not sure how it took this long, but glad it’s
done. I’m not buying Google’s product; I like the Apple solution. On the

Hi Tim,

The extreme is a full on router / wifi device,

Can you use it as an access point without the routing functionality
